L.A. Riots Nothing Compared to the Heat of the Homers

The Homers thrashed, trashed, burned, razed ... the Roving Marauders yesterday, 20 to 10, in a very friendly game of two teams with only nine players in the field. Everybody on the Homers contributed by getting at least one hit apiece, with the big, Homerian blows coming from Juan, who had two, Richard, and Jesus (the husband of Tita, who's Beth's frisbee partner). Other outstanding efforts came from Jeff, who was on the front end of three two-run home runs, Kelly, who also had four hits, and Laurie, who got an RBI to score Tita in the backbreaking, eight-run 4th inning that broke open the game. Last year, it was the Homers who gave up a big 12-run inning in a 19 to 15 loss to the Marauders. Defensively, Jesus made three deep catches in left and chased down a few balls that should have been home runs, including one which he threw to Richard, who relayed it home to Jeff to get a runner at the plate.

The only controversy of the day came about because of the score. The Marauders claimed that the Homers had three fewer runs than we actually had even though each of the runs had been videotaped. After a timeout for a review, the Marauders decided that their scorekeeping would stand; in the words of their scorer, "We're scorers, we're not angels. We're out there to do a low-down dirty job. Would you want your husband doing it, or your son or your father?" Furthermore, she claimed that there was more going on than was seen on the videotape, and besides, she couldn't understand what a Homer would be doing in the neighborhood of home plate anyway, so in a way we were sort of asking for it.

The opening day lineup for the Homers was Raul at pitcher, Jeff at catcher, Juan at first, Laurie at second, Richard at short, Beth at third, Jesus in left, Kelly in center, and Jason in right. During Juan's absence for the fifth and sixth innings, Jeff moved to first and Tita entered the game to catch, and after Kelly left at the top of the seventh, Jeff moved to right and Juan returned (with two cute kids) to first base. After the game, Laurie, Richard, Raul, Jeff, Beth, Tita, and Jesus went out to Georgee's.

The next game for the Homers is Tuesday, May 5, field H4 at the west side of the Rose Bowl field. The victims have already been identified as Weird Science.
