16 June 1992: Homers @ LA Radars

A mild controversy marred the Homers' 18 to 10 win over the LA Radars yesterday. With the score at 12 to 10 in the top of the last inning with Alex at second and Richard at first, Lela grounded the ball back to the pitcher, who turned to try to throw out Richard at second, forcing him to move his butt and slide in to beat the throw. Unfortunately, the Radars' second baseman ended up on her butt, allowing the throw to go into centerfield and Alex to score. Words were spoken between Richard and the second baseman, and soon both benches cleared, eager to engage in lively and constructive debate. The Radars' team manager almost won the ensuing argument by pointing out that the C league rule book explicitly bans sliding, but Raul's citation of the 1992 Supreme Court decision U.S. vs. Alvarez-Machain, which allows U.S. abductions in foreign lands,(cleverly summarized in his riposte of "tough titties") saved the day.

Starting for the Homers were Don J. at pitcher, Mary at catcher, Scott at first, Debbie at second, Richard at short, Lela at rover, Jesus in left, Kelly in center, Mark in right, and Alex at rover. In the second inning, Raul came in at pitcher, Jason at first, Juan at short, and Jerry in the outfield. No one on the Homers' side lived up to the team name although Jason remembers hitting a triple, and Don swung the bat very well although his baserunning needs work. In addition to the six-run sixth (and final) inning, the Homers also scored seven in the third inning to put us ahead 10 to 5. Defensively, Alex made the play of the day in the last inning by catching a pop fly and doubling off a runner at first base to kill any hopes of a rally. Moderately nice plays included Scott's digging out a low throw to first from shortstop and Debbie's and Lela's catching of pop ups, all of which ended innings. One bad note: no one went out for food after the game, although the assistant manager did bring chips and drinks to the game.

Our next game is Thursday, June 25, against the Voodoo Toad Fury on field H4, the one on the west side near the bathrooms. The defense on the left side will be looking into the sun. We had a difficult game against them last year, but it is conceivable that this year's game will be more pleasant, i.e. espero que tengamos suficientes personas la semana pro'xima.
