29 June 1992: Crawdads @ Homers

Following the USA's 41 point demolition of Canada in the basketball Tournament of the Americas, the United States Olympic Committee announced the selection of the Homers as the companion "Dream Team" for co-ed slow-pitch softball, a demonstration sport in this year's Olympics. The selection committee had planned on culling the best players from teams across the country but, after watching the Homers play and interviewing team manager Raul Haro, chose the Homers based on "team spirit, adherence to Olympic ideals, and big pectorals." "Unfortunately, " said Raul, "we may have to decline because Mark might be out of town that weekend, and anyways [sic] we were thinking about having the Homer barbecue that weekend."

In related news, the Homers lost to the Crawdads 21 to 19 in a very enjoyable game. After giving up 8 runs in the top of the 4th to fall behind 13 to 4, the Homers scored 5 in the bottom half of that inning, 7 in the 5th, and 3 in the 6th to take the lead at 19 to 17. The Crawdads then scored 4 in the top half of the 7th and held us scoreless to win. Starting for the Homers yesterday were Don at pitcher, Mark at catcher, Richard at first, Tita at second, Jason at short, Beth at third, Jesus in left, Alex R. in center, and Jeff in right. In subsequent innings, Raul came in at pitcher, Jerry played some second base, and Kelly played center. Bill, his friend Phillip, and Laurie provided words of wisdom. Finally, in a margarita drenched post-game dinner at Mijares, Mark got way, way out of hand while Beth, Don, Laurie, Richard, Jesus, Jason, Raul, Tita, Bill, and Phillip watched.

Offense was the name of the game yesterday. Jesus launched a MONSTROUS home run into low earth orbit that still hasn't been found yet to go with his solo homer in the second. Richard got a little league home run, while Jerry hit a big three-run blow to tie the game at 16 in the fifth inning. Raul had three solid singles to left center while everyone else had one or two hits. It was unfortunate that everyone also had one or two errors, although Kelly made some nice running catches in center.

Our next game has not yet been determined since the schedule for July has not been released.

ERRATA: I regrettably ommitted Lela's name from the Homers' report.
She was as much of a participant in yesterday's game as anyone else,
including at least 1 inning-extending two-out base hit.
