Sources close to Ross Perot indicate that the undeclared presidential nominee will announce his running mate at the end of the week in an attempt to steal some of the thunder coming from the Democratic convention. The list of candidates considered and already rejected range from Jesse Jackson ("gets the 'your people' vote but too loud") to Jonathan Winters ("looks like a war hero") to David Letterman ("10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"). Some have speculated that Perot may, by means of presidential decree, simply abolish the post of vice president or substitute a committee, the leading candidates for which would be the USA Olympic Dream Team ("guaranteed winners"), those people working on GCF ("gets the sympathy vote"), and the Homers.
However, the Homers lost 14 to 7 to the Heavy Hitters yesterday, ending all hopes of receiving the nomination. Starting for the Homers were Raul at pitcher, Jerry at catcher, Scott at first, Laurie at second, Richard at short, Lela at third, Jesus in left, Alex in center, and Jeff in right. There was no rover, as the Homers had only nine players. Also, because the Homers had only two women, the Heavy Hitters, in an interesting and original interpretation of the C league rules, made us take an out every inning from the 4th inning on. Still, the Homers led 7 to 6 until the bottom of the 6th, when the Heavy Hitters scored their final 8 runs. As a final besmirchment on the reputation of the Homers, there was no team outing after the game.
Richard had the only Homer home run yesterday, even if it was a little league job, and a solo shot at that. Jesus and Raul both contributed run-scoring triples, although the latter did end the game, stranding Jeff, who picked up three (two?) hits, on first base. The defensive play of the day came from Laurie, who stopped her first ball ever and threw out the runner at first. Jerry made the "backcatch" position more than its name by running down a pop-up, and Richard started two double plays from short, the second with a nice dig by Scott.
Our next game is Tuesday, July 21, against the Goat Scouts on a field yet to be determined. Before that, though, there will be a preemptive bachelor party for Alex R. this Friday at the Oddball Cabaret, starting some time around 8:00 p.m. The Oddball Cabaret, located at 8532 Sepulveda (cross street: Roscoe) in some city in the valley, maintains the strictest standards of decorum. Attendees so far include Richard, Raul, Don, Jason, Jeff (?), Junior (?). Bring $1 bills.
