21 July 1992: Homers @ Goat Scouts

The chief - almost the only - attraction of the young woman's face was its mobility. When she looked down sideways to the girl she became pretty, and even handsome, particularly that in the action her features caught slantwise the rays of the strongly coloured sun, which made transparencies of her eyelids and nostrils and set fire on her lips. When she plodded on in the shade of the hedge, silently thinking, she had the hard, half-apathetic expression of one who deems anything possible at the hands of Time and Chance except, perhaps, fair play. The first phase was the work of Nature, the second probably of civilization.

That the man and woman were husband and wife, and the parents of the girl in arm, there could be little doubt. No other than such relationship would have accounted for the atmosphere of stale familiarity which the trio carried along with them like a nimbus as the moved down the road.

The Homers lost 25 to 5 yesterday to the Goat Scouts. Starting for the Homers were Raul at pitcher, Don F at catcher, Jeff at first, Mary at second, Jason at short, Mark at third, Don J in left, Richard in center, and Laurie in right. Izeller showed up in the third inning in her Homer debut and played left-center, moving Richard to right-center. The Homers actually led 2 to 1 after the first inning, but when the rainstorm failed to materialize, the Goat Scouts scored 22 runs (7, 5, 5, 5) in the next four innnings. At least there was a good post-game turnout, as Raul, Jeff, Mary, Jason, Mark, Don J, and Laurie celebrated their continuing ambulatory adulthood at Robin's.

Richard had the only Homer home run yesterday, a legitimate two-run shot that brought the Homers out of the double-mercy rule. Jason contributed two or three hits. Defensively, the Homers struggled as 5 players tried out new positions.

Our next game is Thursday, July 30, against the Space Punks at a field yet to be determined. Between now and then, let's all wish a nice wedding to Lela and Alex, the latter having spent a cerebral and contemplative evening with Junior, Don, Jason, Raul, Richard, Gerry, Juan (their brother), and Jose (b-i-l) at the Oddball Cabaret last Friday, where the highlight was a haute-couture comic interpretation of "The Mayor of Casterbridge". And let's also add our hopes for a speedy recovery for one who's fallen by the wasyside, Debbie, whose bat and glove are sorely missed.
