Heavy Hitters 0 0 3 0 3 0 4 10 Homers 6 3 4 4 8 2 x 27That's right: the Homers scored in every innning. The top half of the order batted five times as everybody got at least two hits except Bill, who didn't bat until the Homers's last offensive inning. John hit two home runs while Richard got one, but everyone's bat seemed alive. Amy blasted a ball over the right fielder's head; unfortunately, the grass is so tall in some areas that the ball died and the center fielder chased it down to hold Amy to a double. Beth hit a nice shot up the middle, Jeff got one to left, and Laurie got a couple of infield hits.
Defensively there wasn't that much action. The outfielders made a few nice plays. Richard made a couple of throwing errors in the second inning in a sporting attempt to make the game closer, but the Heavy Hitters didn't respond. OK, would you believe that I didn't want to decapitate the runner coming into second base on the near double-play that turned into a force-out at second and a throwing error. As for nearly hitting the runner in the head as he was about to score, the truth of the matter is that I saw a big hairy wasp about to sting him in the back of the neck, and I noticed that on his right wrist he wore a bracelet that identified him as allergic to bee stings. My throw didn't nail the wasp, but it did form enough of an air current to chase it away. The nailee thanked me afterwards for saving his life.
Our next game in Wednesday, June 2, Great Ballls of Fire @ Homers, Pasadena High School. If you don't have a map, send mail to me at
rchen@kelvin.jpl.nasa.gov.We actually do have a map and a permit for this field. After next week's game, Jeff will graciously invite us to his house for the post-game meal featuring food from El Tepeyac.
