June 2, 1993: Great Balls of Fire @ Homers

First, the bad news: the two game baby roll ended as the Homers lost 8 to 6 to the Great Balls of Fire. The good news is that the Great Balls of Fire, known as Weird Science in their last incarnation, was missing Jim G_______, who earned 241 out of 242 votes for the least liked player in C league last year (players were not allowed to vote for themselves).

The batting order for the Homers was Ron (RF), Amy (CF/3B), Tim (1B/SS), Richard (SS/P), Jesus (LF), Beth (3B), Jeff (C/1B), Don J (CF) in his season debut, Doug (1B), Rashmi (2B/Rover), Don C (CF), Dave (P), Monica (2B/Rover), and Laurie (2B). Spectating for the good guys were Holly, Mark Parisi, and Mary Johnson.

    Great Balls of Fire 1 0 0 5 1 0 1 8
    Homers 1 0 0 2 0 1 2 6
The one bad inning came in the 4th when the Homers made two errors that cost us runs. The first was a slow ground ball to short which Richard underhanded to second base too far ahead of Laurie. The second was a ground ball up the middle which Dave deflected to the right and which Richard subsequently froze on. A batter or two later, the opposing shortstop hit a grand slam over the right field fence. In fact, Richard had a really tough day, leaving four or five runners on base in his last two at bats, which is enough to make a man give up his managerial and editorial duties (NO! NO! ok, ok, I'm back).

The Homers did play good defense. Ron had two outstanding catches in right field, one against the fence on a deep line drive by the same shortstop (Marc Pomerantz?). Offensively, Jesus hit a solo home run in the seventh, and Laurie got the best hit of her season (of her life) on a single over the third baseman's head in the sixth.

Adjourning to Jeff's house after the game to enjoy seven burritos, six taquitos, and three quesadillas (with lots of guacamole) from El Tepeyac were Ron, Richard, Laurie, Jesus, Jeff, Don and Don, Mark, and Mary. A very short, MTV-ish video (minus the music) was shown to rave reviews. "* * * 1/2" - Susan Granger, American Movie Classics. "The feel-good, must-see movie of the summer" - Joel Siegel, Good Morning America. "Its dramatic editing, with daring disregard for sequencing, suggests a creative force soon to be challenging Fellini" - Pat Collins, WWOR-TV. "Joe Bob says check it out" - Joe Bob at the drive-in.

Next week is a bye although we will be having a voluntary practice at Oak Grove Park on Wednesday, June 9, at 5:30. Our next game is Thursday, June 17, at Johm Muir High School, Pole-zero Bears @ Homers.
