June 23, 1993: Prime Time @ Homers

The Homers played really well again to defeat Prime Time 19 to 15. Rather than giving up a big inning, the Homers got one in the bottom of the second, during which 11 runs scored. The Homers did give up two medium-sized innings, the first of which left the Homers down 4 to 0 after the first half inning. Two home runs brought the score down to 4 to 3, then the 11-run second brought the mercy rule, which stayed on for three innings. As for friendliness, Prime Time rates a 6 or so with bonus points for calling ahead of time to confirm the game and the field more than negated by some big tall cheesehead who slid into second base with his spikes up.

The batting order for the Homers was Ron (P), Amy (LCF), Tim (1B), Richard (SS), Jeff (C), Monica (3B/2B), Don C (RF), Jesus (LF), Doug (C/OF), Laurie (2B/3B), and Russ (RCF) in his Homer debut. Faithful Holly led the cheers from the bench.

    Prime Time 4 0 2 1 3 5 0 15
    Homers 3 11 2 1 1 1 x 19
Ron led off the game with a home run, followed by a two-run shot by Richard three batters later. Jesus hit a three-run line drive home run to right center field, helped by the fact that Prime Time played 5 infielders. However, Monica was the true batting star of the game by getting her two most solid hits of the year, both up the middle.

The Homer defense declined a bit, but it was good enough when needed. Play of the day goes to Richard, JJJJJJeeeeeeffffffffffff, and Tim (name length is directly proportional to time of possession), who ended the game by turning the first-ever Homer triple play. Richard, after putting runners on first and second and then pitching drek to some Prime woman, caught her line drive up the middle, threw to Jeff at first for the second out, then took a nap. Upon awakening at the sound of 9 people shouting in unison, "Jeff! Throw the ball to second!" he awoke to see Jeff do just that to get the third out. That play was in large part set up by Laurie at third base, who knocked down two ground balls headed for the outfield, the second with her upper chest. The Homers also turned a double play in the second inning on a hard ground ball to the left of shortstop, which Richard picked up, tagged second, and threw to Tim at first. Russ made a few nice catches in the outfield to ensure himself of a second invitation to play.

Actually, play of the day II goes to Jesus in left who, extremely conscious of the wooden soccer goalpost in left field, stopped five feet short of the goalpost, leaped vertically, stretched to his right, and dropped the ball. There were also a few Homer throwing errros. A video camera would have been nice for this game, no?

Next week's game is at Pasadena High School on Wednesday, June 30, against (booooooo, hisssssss) Voodoo Toad Fury. For the first time since the middle of May, we will be the away team. Also, we were fortunate in that there are actually two games scheduled for the following day, the day before our four-day weekend.
