July 14, 1993: Deep Space Cadets @ Homers

The Homers set a team record by scoring 13 runs in one inning during a 21 to 18 victory over the Deep Space Cadets. The batting order for the Homers was Ron (P/3B), Tim (1B/SS), Laurie (2B), Richard (SS/1B), Jeff (RF/C), Raul (P/CF), Russ (CF/RF), Don J (LF), and Robb Warren (RF), who saved the game by substituting in after Tim and Russ left. Due to the shortage of women, Laurie/Amy batted after every three male batters. The Deep Space Cadets is one of the nicest teams in C league, so four of them (Martha and Doug Berg, Caroline Racho, and Jim somebody, who had a spectacular collision at home with Raul) joined the five of us (Richard, Laurie, Raul, Jeff, and Don - Ron was MIA) who went to Charlie Trillo's (sp?) after the game.

Everyone hit well with home run honors going to Don with a solo shot (first home run of the year) and Richard with a deep, personally-satisfying, Jesus-like (the one on our team) grand slam to close out the scoring in the 4th and a three-run little league home run in the sixth. Ron came close but opted for style points with a belly flop at third base. On the down side, Richard threw at least three balls away from short to first, prompting field manager Jeff to move Tim to short. Amy, Richard, and Jeff did hook up on a nice relay to catch a Cadet trying to stretch a triple into a home run, and Laurie got her first assist, a ground ball which she scooped up and threw to first. In general, it was not a good game defensively, but at least we did not give up a big inning.

Next week's game is Monday against another pleasant team, the Wild Turkeys, at John Muir High School again. Due to reduced numbers, I'll probably start taking head counts before the game, so please inform me, as Doug has been good enough to do, as to whether you'll be there or not.
