July 26, 1993: Homers @ Maulers

MAULER - HOMER GAME VOIDED!

The JPL C League commissioner has declared yesterday's gave between the Homers and the Maulers null and void amidst speculation that the Maulers have been paying their players. The Maulers apparently ran short of funds and were forced to raise revenue by taking money from the Homer slushy fund. Former team manager _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (anonymity requested) uncovered the scandal when the bank returned his check for insufficient funds. The HOMERS REPORT managed to obtain these photocopies:

Homers general manager Richard Chen politely declined comment, but current field manager Jeff Osman belched LOUDLY at the Mauler bench in the 4th inning in a personal act of defiance.

It didn't help, though, as the Maulers crushed the Homers 11 to 2 in the Homers worst loss of the season. In fact, the Maulers mercy-ruled the Homers in the 4th inning. The batting order for the Homers, who did get a great turnout, was Scott (OF/SS), Jeff (C/1B), Amy (OF), Don C (OF), Ron (3B/OF), Richard (SS/P), Laurie (2B), Tim (1B), Jesus (OF), Doug (C), Monica (OF), Don J (P/OF), Raul (OF), Beth (3B), and Russ (OF). Norm (NORM!) offered encouragement from the sidelines along with Holly, who offered peace to Richard. After the game, Jeff, Norm, Don J., Raul, Laurie, Ron B., Dave Wagner, Robb Warren, and Mary Wittman (the last three obviously being Maulers) broke bread together at Fuddrucker's.

    Homers 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 2
    Maulers 4 1 1 5 0 0 x 11
The Homers had no power, resulting in no home runs but lots of pop-ups. Offensive star of the day, after much campaigning for the award, goes to Jeff Osman, who went three-for-three. Defensive star of the day goes to Laurie Chen, who threw one Mauler out at first base and then almost got the next one (Robb). Otherwise, YIKES!

Next week's game is Tuesday, August 3, against the Delta Stars at Pasadena High School. Hopefully, the groundskeepers will have drained the swamp behind third base by then to prevent the spread of malaria. Let's hope that we get another good turnout, for Amy and Richard will miss at least the first hour of the game.
