[EDITOR'S NOTE: The normal HOMERS REPORT sports writer was unavailable to report on this week's game. We at the HOMERS REPORT tried to get an appropriate substitute to cover the game. We asked Jim Murray but he was busy hitting the talk show circuit promoting his new book. We asked Mike Downey but he didn't think he was up to the task. We asked Fred Roggin but he says he just knows how to read someone else's writing. We were getting so desperate we even asked the JPL UNIVERSE if they could send someone, but their sports editor was still busy covering last April's NASA Intercenter running competition. Finally we had to settle on some hack whose sole qualification was he claimed he knew where to find the electronic mail distribution list for the HOMERS REPORT. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this has caused our valued readers. Now, on with the report]
Things looked bleak at the start of this week's Homers game. Not only did the other team all show up by the 5:30 game time, they all wore matching t-shirts. The Delta Stars were obviously the bad guys, they wore black. They all warmed up together. They looked mean. They looked like they knew what they were doing. And if that wasn't enough, the Homers had to contend with the absence of their most valuable member, Holly (sorry Amy, Richard, Monica, Beth, and Russ). It looked like it might be one long game for the mighty Homer's. Fortunately, looks can be deceiving. The good guys pulled another one out.
DELTA STARS 4 5 0 1 0 0 0 10 HOMERS 5 1 0 2 0 4 x 12Starting for the Homers were Scott (P/SS/C), Don C. (OF), Tim (SS/1B), Laurie (2B), Ron (OF), Jeff (1B/bench), Raul (OF/C), Lela (3B/OF in her Homer debut for this year. THANK YOU!), Doug (C/1B), Chris (C/3B), Jesus (OF), Susie (3B/OF/2B), and Don J. (P). Showing up at just about the end of the game to share in the winning excitement were Richard (SS) and Amy (OF).
Jesus definitely gets player of the game award for both his offense and his defense. He had the only homer of the game (a solo shot in the second) and had another one stolen from him by the Delta Star's left fielder. He, however, returned the favor by making a great catch with his back against the fence in deep center field to take away a home run from the bad guys. Offensive honorable mentions go to Ron for a 2 run triple in the first, Jeff for going 3 for 3 for his second week in a row (and this time one of the hits was even legitimate), Laurie for getting more hits and scoring more runs than Richard, and Raul for his powerful three foot single that he was able to run out. Defensive kudos go to Doug for several close plays at first, Susie for almost completing an impressive double play, and Chris for heads up play at both catcher and third base.
The after game celebration took place at Island's with Don J., Raul, Scott, Ron, and Jeff reliving the glories and consoling the injured. (How is the back Raul?)
Next week's game is Wednesday, August 11 at John Muir High School against the Roving Marauders. I'm not sure which fields at JMHS we will be playing on yet. I'll try to let you know ahead of time, but be prepared to look for us.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: We have just been informed that our regular HOMERS REPORT sports writer will be out for at least another week. Rest assured that we will continue our search for a more suitable replacement. Thank you for your understanding.]
