August 11, 1993: Homers @ Roving Marauders

PASADENA (UPI), Scientists at NASA'a Jet Propulsion Laboratory here tell us that a very rare event occurred last night. They said that an event of this magnitude comes around only once every 20,000 years or so. Accrording to the scientist's calculations, this event is caused by the dynamic interplay of several celestial bodies, and is also influenced by the phase of the moon and the sun spot cycle. The technical details are staggering and understood only by a few of the brightest PhD's here at JPL. In an attempt to make this event understandable to the common person, one of the scientists made the following statement:

It is difficult to put this in lay man's terms but simply stated (if such a comment can be simply stated) a JPL C-league softball game ended in a tie. The odds of this event happening are just astronomical. (That's a little astronomers joke.) To think that I have been here at just the right time to witness this occurrence is just beyond me. It is clearly the highlight of my career. More important than Voyager, Magellan, and Galileo combined. I'm just speechless.

Oh yeah, and there was also this real neat light show in the sky caused by some falling rocks in space for those of you interested in that kind of stuff.

Yes, as stunning as it is to believe the Homers and the Roving Marauders played to a 15-15 tie.
    Homers 0 3 6 0 0 5 1 15
    Roving Marauders 3 0 0 1 0 6 5 15
A good turn out of Homers stalwarts showed up for the game. The batting order was Scott (1B/OF/P), Amy (OF), Don C. (OF), Jeff (bench/1B), Tim (SS), Susie (2B/OF), Chris (C/OF), Mark (P/SS/OF), Doug (1B), Beth (3B), Jim [Doug's dad] (C/OF), Ron (OF/P), Monica (2B), Russ (OF), and Bob (C). The cheering section include or regular fan Holly plus Jerri and Kimberly Hodges and Tita Martinez (without Jesus).

Offensively we pretty much played our normal game. Russ had a 2 run homer in the third inning and Mark had 2 solo homers in the second and the seventh. Don had a solid triple, and just about everyone else got a least one hit.

Defensively we had an up and down game. Instead of the Homer tradition of giving up one bad inning we gave up two and a half bad innings. However, we did have some bright spots defensively. All three outs in the first inning were force outs from short stop to 3rd base. All three outs in the second inning were force outs from the pitcher to 1st base. The third inning started with two force outs from pitcher to 2nd base and then the pattern was ruined by the third out being a force from short stop to 2nd base. The big innings were mostly due to the Marauders being able (or more likely lucky enough) to hit the gaps.

Due to the late completion of the game, and a large contingent of Frisbee players wanting to play some Double Disc Court, there was no post-game feeding frenzy.

Next week's game is against the Space Punks on Wednesday, August 18, at Pasadena High School. We are home team.
