The Homers continued their winning ways this week by dominating the Co-op Turbo Jello team so badly that by the end of the game they were quivering like, well, like a bowl full of Jello. (Okay, I know that's pretty bad, but you try and find some good jokes involving Jello!)
Homers 1 3 4 8 1 4 21 Turbo Jello 0 2 0 1 3 0 6 [Don't ask me what happened to the 7th inning. I don't know. Both Turbo Jello and Scott claimed I lost an inning on the score sheet but nobody could remember what happened in it.]The Homers were a little short handed at the start of the game so we called all over the world to round up the best ringers we could find. Starting for the Homers were: Don (OF), Scott (SS/P/1b), Richard Stephenson (all the way from Australia to play OF for us. G'day Richard!), Beth (3b), Jeff (1b/C), Ron (P/SS/OF), Dave (C/P, in from Chicago just for the game. Welcome back), Laurie (2b), Mike (OF/SS, we never did get his last name but he's from Voodoo Toad Land), John Chang (OF, in from Boston by way of Las Vegas), Richard (P, by way of Loma Alta and the B-league), and Jesus (OF, also from the B-league game).
Offensively the Homers lived up to their name. Home runs were hit by Don, Mike, and John, with John and Don hitting triples as well. Dave would have had a home run as well, if only his knees would of allowed it. Everyone else got at least one hit during the game, most got at least two.
Defensively the highlight was that Richard C. wasn't around for most of the game, so there were no serious overthrows to first base! (Hey, when you are the supposed target for most of those overthrows this is a big deal!!!). Seriously though, John and Beth combined for a nice force out at third base, the outfield was solid, and Dave made a good tag out of a runner trying to score.
Game ball goes to Richard Stephenson for playing his first ever game of American softball. With just a few words of explanation (there is no wicket, and the person throwing the ball is called the pitcher not the bowler, etc.) he realized the difference between softball and cricket and was able to contribute to the victory. Of special note was his solid hitting. His only trouble during the game was when he foolishly listened to his base coach and got picked off of first base. (What exactly did you tell him Don?)
After the game Richard C., Laurie, John, Don, Ron, and Jeff joined Richards B-league team (including Amy) at Round Table for the post game feast and bull session.
Next week's game is Tuesday at Pasadena High School (I think. I'll let you know if that is wrong) against the Asterisks. Let me or Richard know if you can't make it.
