Humble pie city:

The JPL C League softball season unofficially opened and closed with the Voodoo Toad Fury's thrashing of the Homers by at least 5 runs. In response to this disaster, team manager Richard Chen posted to the Usenet newsgroup jpl.gripe and promised the following: JPL management deemed the effort very reengineering (to adjective the word), promised to deliver it within 100 days, and named it "the Contract with NASA."

The starting lineup for the Homers was Richard (SS), Scott (P), Karen (2B), Jeff (RF), Ron (CF), Tim (1B), Don (LF), and Robb (3B). Mary showed up near the end of the game to join all the team but Tim at Fuddrucker's.

The game started promisingly enough for the Homers with a leadoff home run from Richard, but that was it for offense for a long, long time. Karen ended up with three hits, but mostly the Homers contented themselves with giving the Toads stiff necks from watching the trajectories of the pop-ups. Robb played good D during his stint at third base.

No schedule exists yet. A reminder: we will average less than 1 game per week for the first two months and will make up the missed games in the second half.

Not that we should panic, but I would like to have a practice this weekend. If you're interested in getting together Sunday (or Saturday), send me e-mail.
