While the HOMERs management team used the remainder of the team fees to travel to New York, the remaining loyal HOMERs (and some very much appreciated borrowed Deep Space Cadets) gathered for a match against the Vas-Y Bears. The HOMERs lineup was Scott (P/1B/C), Ron (LF/P), Don (CF), Barbara (RF/2B), David (C/RF), Tim (SS/LF), Jim (1B,3B), Amy (3B/LF/SS), and Martha (RF/P/3B). Martha and Jim are part of the HOMERs "Distinguished Visiting Player" program.

The line score looks as ugly as the game itself:

    HOMERS 5 8 6 10 3 2 0 34
    BEARS 5 0 1 1 0 2 0 9
Much like their namesake, the Cal Bears, the Vas-Y Bears had trouble generating any offense at all. ("Vas-Y" is not a misspelling of "fuzzy" but it is French for "Let's Go". "Cal" is actually a misspelling of "Berkeley".) The Bears chants of "Vas-Y" were met with HOMER cries of "Jai Yo", which gave the game a truely international flair.

After the first inning, the HOMER defense was like a rock, only giving up runs when the triple mercy rule was about to be invoked. Defensively, Martha and Jim teamed up for a pair of sparkling plays at first. Also, Amy began her bid to become starting shortstop by initiating a double play on a liner.

Offensively there were far too many hits to mention. Notable standouts were Ron who was just a home run short of a cycle, Tim who had a pair of taters, Don who experimented with agricultural hitting with a treeple, and Amy with two doubles.

There was no after game celebration since everyone was too tired from running the bases.

The next HOMER game is Thursday, June 29 at Pasadena High School on the normal field in the back corner. Our opponent is the Goat Scouts, historically a very good team. Please let Richard or Jeff know if you will not be able to make it.
