Midway through the Hootie and the Blowfish concert at the Greek last Saturday, the band put down their instruments and led the crowd in singing "We Shall Overcome" as a protest to the U. C. Regents' decision to end affirmative action in admissions. Lead singer Darius Rucker explained, "Man, a year ago I had a premonition that this would happen, and I made the band vow to back me on the protest if it did." Darius then led the crowd in singing another '60's anthem, this one dedicated to the Homers C league softball team, "Where Have All the Women Gone?"
Despite having two biker chicks, the Homers took a penalty out at the bottom of the order for the second week in a row due to the absence of any other women. When Amy left in the fifth, the Homers took two outs each time through the order. Fortunately, solid defense carried the day.
Roving Marauders 0 2 0 0 2 0 0 4 Homers 4 2 1 0 3 6 x 16The batting order for the good guys was Jeff (1B/C/RF), Rich (3B/SS/1B), Don (LF), Sue (2B), Richard (SS/CF/LF/P), Scott (P/1B), Ron (CF/P), Amy (RF), Dave (C/3B/LF), and Tim (1B/SS). Although the team ended the game with only eight players on the field (Amy and Tim left to do battle against one another in a B- game), six Homers made it over to Round Table after the game to crush the Marauders again in beer swilling and trash talking: Jeff, Ron, Scott, Don, Rich, and Richard.
Don continued his monstrous hitting with two more home runs, giving him nine in the last four games. Don has now tied Ron and Richard for the season lead in home runs despite missing three games during his trip to Madrid. Asked about the difference between the beginning of the season (no home runs in five games) and now, Don explained that while on travel, he learned the potency of the Spanish fly. Richard and Scott also hit home runs, while Jeff and Dave both swung the bat well.
Defensively, the Homers got solid infield defense. Rich and Tim each made strong, arcless throws to first on ground balls they charged. In the third, Sue made a good stop of a hard-hit ball up the middle to prevent runners from advancing and on the next play got the force at second on a throw from Richard. Tim and Scott combined for a line-drive double play in the fourth, and Richard, Rich, and Scott got a 1-6-3 double play in the sixth.
Our next game is Wednesday, August 2, on field H2 of the Rose Bowl (the one we played on this week) against the Voodoo Toad Fury, one of the four good teams in C (along with Propulsion Army, Prime Time, and us). They beat us badly in our preseason game.
