The leader board going into the final day of the Homer Open:
Don 14 Richard down 1 Ron down 3 Tim down 6Through the first five innings, Tim hit a nice 2-iron over the left fielder's head in the first, but none of the top three could get on the board, although Don's 6-iron tee shot in the 4th was somehow caught by the right fielder. The action came alive in the sixth as Richard led off with a 5-iron just out of the center fielder's reach to pull him into a tie with Don. Ron and then Don followed with nice drives of their own to restore the board to its starting position, and Tim followed with his second two batters later to close the gap to:
Don 15 Richard down 1 Ron down 3 Tim down 5In the seventh, Richard led off again with a shank to right that found its way through to tie Don and to put the mercy rule on. Ron then hit a 9-iron to short for the second out, and unfortunately for Don, the Homers had to take a third out at that point due to a shortage of women. Them's the breaks, pal.
Oh, yes, there was a game as well. The Homers closed out the '95 season with a 17 to 7 victory over the Roving Marauders. The game began as a blowout, got close during Richard's one inning of pitching, and ended as a rout as the Homers had the big sixth.
Homers 5 0 1 0 2 8 1 17 Roving Marauders 1 1 0 0 5 0 x 8No more talk about exceptional turnouts. The Homers played with 9 men and 1 woman, taking outs after the third and the sixth batters every time through the order. Them's the breaks, pal. Playing for the possibly-perceived-as-obnoxious ones were Jeff (2B/OF/1B), Richard (LCF/C/SS/LF), Ron (P/SS), Don (CF/C), Dave (RF/3B). Tim (SS/C/LF), Scott (3B/LCF/C), Doug (1B/RF), Jim (LCF/RCF), and Sue (2B). Afterwards, Sue, Ron, Doug, Jeff, and Richard closed out the post-game-dinner season at Round Table.
In brief softball terms, Tim hit two home runs, with the first being an important three-run blow to put the Marooders down, and the second a two-run back-breaker to put the Homers up by 5 in the sixth. Richard hit two solo shots, while Don and Ron each hit a solo. Our sole woman Sue also had a big game with three RBIs although she was illegally body-blocked and tagged out when trying to return to second base at the end of the sixth with Richard on deck. Them's the breaks, pal.
Defensivley, Doug had a great game in the first inning when he stretched down the first base line to snag Tim's throw and retire Karen, who reached first just behind the throw and could not avoid landing on top of Doug. He also made another nice putout later that inning.
Nice season, folks. There will be a Homer party at some point.
