29 April 1996: Gravity Fielders @ Homers

Repentance was far from the minds of the Gravity Fielders after an inning and a half, but a 14-run Homer deluge brought their end mercilessly. After the game, Homer archaeologists searched for signs of life where their opponents' position players once stood but could find nothing but little piles of ash. Homer historians vowed to begin a search for previous marks of such wrath and devastation.

Another pleasant crowd turned out for another pleasant day: Ellen (RF/R/C), Scott (SS/P/LF), Sue (2B/C), Ron (P/LF), Barbara (R), David (CF/SS), Monica (C/2B), Doug (1B), Allan (LF/C), Phil (CF/RF/3B), Mary (R/RF), Robb (3B/C/LF/P), Holly (1B/3B), and Martha (PH) played while Richard (was) babysat (by) Holly/Allen, Hannah/Taylor, and Susie. This was probably the first time that an even number of Homer women and Homer men have played in a game. Afterward, David, Sue, Ron, Monica, Holly/Allen, Doug, and Richard ate at Georgee's, where they met up with Martha and other Deep Space Cadets and Tim.

Play of the day goes to Holly. With things looking a bit grim due to a 6-0 deficit, the Homers came alive in the second, with the first 9 batters getting hits to put the Homers ahead by 1, leaving 2 runners on base. On a high and flat pitch perfect for a reaction hitter, Holly crushed the ball over the left fielder, whose eyes became as big as saucers as he froze and likely realized in the headlights of the oncoming Schmidt truck that his fate was nothing but road kill. Later in the same inning, Ron and David spread the pain around by hitting 2-run dingers to center and right, respectively, to cap the 14-run inning. Ron also hit a 3-run homer off the center fielder's glove in the 4th to give the Homers their biggest lead of the day.

However, every Homer again played well and got at least 1 hit. Barbara, striving to become the poster child for Nautilus, muscled two solid hits to center in the 2nd inning before leaving; Ron, David, and Monica also got on twice in the 2nd. Doug came up with two defensive pearls: on one he scooped up a one-hopper thrown by Scott, and on the other he let a wild throw from Holly go to hit the opposing batter/base runner in the back of the head.

Next week's game is Monday, May 6, against the Crawdads on field H5, which is on the east side of the Rose Bowl field. The Homer cheer needs more practice before the nationals, so let's get it right.
