6 June 1996: Homers @ Roving Marauders

ESPN Radio earlier this week asked former middleweight champion Sugar Ray Leonard to predict the outcome of the latest upcoming battle of the century. "I fully expect the favorite to jump out and score some points quickly, extend the lead through the middle rounds, and eventually win this thing by knockout. That's right - I'm picking the Homers in 6," which in fact is exactly what happened as the Roving Marauders failed to answer the call of the bell for the seventh inning, perhaps sparing themselves the ignmoiny of being the first team to benefit from the triple mercy rule.
    Homers 6 5 4 8 5 0 28
    Roving Marauders 0 4 2 1 0 0 7
In terms of the lineup, the most interesting event was the season debut of Rich Benesh, who proved himself somewhat worthy of donning a Homer uniform by his coaching at third base, where he simply pointed toward home any time a Homer reached second. He would have gained full Homerhood had he not popped up on the infield to end the first inning.

Holly and Allen, the only spectators at this game, pulled some votes away from the Kiedrowski kids and the Runkle kids in the race for cutest fans. However, their parents, clearly not accustomed to the obligatory pandering for votes, hurt their chances by not attending dinner afterward at Round Table, where Tim, Jeff, Robb, Sue, Ron, Scott, Martha, and Richard broke pizza and beer with Karen Chan and a few other Marauders.

The Homers had an outstanding offensive day, hitting the mercy rule in two innings and the double mercy rule in two others. Scott and Allan each hit two home runs to drive in five, with the second of Scott's being a grand slam and the second of Allan's actually going over someone's head. Ron refused to lose too much ground in the race for M. Homer (soul) by hitting a two-run home run. Everyone hit well though, with the team batting average probably over .700 for the day.

The defensive play of the day goes to Allan for a nice running catch of a deep drive to center field in the last inning. Had he not made it, the Homers would have lost their 3-touchdown margin of victory. Holly also managed to keep that pretty face intact during her inning at shortstop.

In other news,

Next week's game is Thursday, June 13, against the Wild Turkeys on field H3 again, which is in the southwest corner of the Rose Bowl field. The Turkeys should be another nice team of patsies, though I shouldn't say that since my work-area manager plays for them.
