Mmmm, do-nuts. The Homers gave the Cadets plenty of 'em yesterday and came close to shutting them out for the entire game but for the refusal of one player, who shall remain unnamed due to his status as assistant manager, to lay out for a sinking line drive for fear of staining his gold lame' suit. This Homer hunka hunka burning love opted to try for the shoestring catch and came up with air, allowing the batter to reach third and subsequently score, but the Homers prevailed anyway, 11 to 2.

Doh, baby! In a gesture of unity and sympathy from Homer management, the game ball goes to Paula All-Shook-Up Lee, manager of the Deep Space Cadets, for juggling 23 players. Yes, probably for the first time this season, the Homers lost the battle of the benches, and this one wasn't close. It was quite impressive, though, to be part of a game with at least 40 people, two of whom were the Homers' only spectators, Samantha and Isabelle. This game marked the season debut of Karen Stuck-On-You Chan and the Homer debut of Annette Little-Sister Nasif, both of whom played well and were extended contracts to the ends of their lives during dinner at Round Table, attended by Tim, Cheryl, Samantha, Isabelle, Annette, Jeff, Scott, Karen, Ron, Sue, Robb, and Richard. Highlight of the meal: Robb Teddy-Bear Warren's strapping on the lederhosen, singing "So long, farewell, auf wiedensein, goodbye" to each departing Homer, and then whistling the next bar.

The play of the day goes to David Don't-Be-Cruel Lim. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning and two outs, some Cadet hit a sharp ground ball between first and second which appeared headed to the outfield to score at least two when David moved quickly to his right, speared the ball at full extension, and alertly threw to second for the force rather than try to turn his momentum around and get the batter at first. The most satisfying play of the day goes to Mary Return-To-Sender Wittman, who caught a deep fly ball hit to right by the Cadet who had taken probably 15 pitches before finding the one he could drive that way. The lackadaisical play of the day goes to Holly Are-You-Lonesome-Tonight Schmidt, who with two outs dropped a meatball infield pop-up, though she did get the force thanks to the runner at first heading toward the bench rather than second base. And Cheryl Wanna-Stick-Around-Wanna-Get-My-Kicks Kiedrowski pitched four shutout innings, which deserves mentioning because she was such a good sport at dinner.

Offensively, both Homer home runs came in the fourth when Scott Morning Morgan Town (out of Elvis's) hit a solo down the left field line followed by Ron Only-Fools-Rush-In Baalke's two-run home run down the right-field line two batters later. This game may also have seen Robb's reemergence, for he hit the ball squarely all three times up.

Due to the July 4 holiday, we have no game next week. Our next game is Thursday, July 11, against the Cassini Grounders on field H2, the one on the south side of the Rose Bowl field.

Elvis Homer has left the building.
