19 August 1996: Asterisks/Cassini Grounders @ Homers

From: KELVIN::MORGAN   "Scott Morgan" 20-AUG-1996 15:38:07.23

The HOMERs arrived at the Rose Bowl yesterday with thoughts of a delectable seafood meal in their heads ("Mmmmmm lobster!"). However, a check of the pots revealed nary a single Rock Lobster had been caught and the HOMERs' thoughts moved to other things ("Mmmmmm beer!"). As luck would have it, a combined team of Aster-Bears and Cassini Grounders offered to challenge the HOMERs, a challenge that was readily accepted by HOMER COO Jeff Osman ("What the heck, there's no lobsters here").

The game was marred by many, many hits for the opposition, which led to many runs for the opposition, resulting in a HOMER loss by the score of 19-14. The HOMER faithful were Karen (P/C), Scott (OF/SS), Jeff (OF/C/2B), Robb (SS/OF/1B), Holly (1B/SS), Raul (C/OF), Ron (OF/P), David (OF/SS), Evora (3B/1B), Ellen (2B/OF), Sue (2B/C), Beth (3B/OF), and Alex (C/OF). A rambunctious cheering section of Allen, Hannah, Taylor, and Suzie provided moral support, some base coaching assistance, and death-defying sprints in front of the opposing batters. Making their HOMER regular-season debuts were Raul, Beth, and Alex. Offensively, HOMER honors go to Scott (2 run HR), Holly (3 run HR), and Ron (3 run HR), although only Holly's actually went over anyone's head. Ron also receives note for an uncharacteristic Texas League bloop triple. Defensively, the HOMERs were led by Raul's two outstanding outfield catches and a nice tag play at third by Beth.

The line score:

Aster-Bear-Grounders 4	6  6  0	 3 -     19
HOMERs		     5	0  5  0	 4 -     14

After the game, HOMERs Karen, Jeff, Sue, Ron, Robb, Alex, Holly, Raul, Beth and Scott retired to Roundtable to comiserate, eat, and do the Macarena. Cameo appearances by Richard, Tim, Bruce, Rich, Cheryl, Amy, Earl, and Vin Scully (who should not do the Macarena) added to the festivities. When asked about the HOMER loss, HOMER presidential candidate Chen gave the following quote to the press: "We beat the Menaces, who gives a crap about the HOMERs". Campaign spin doctors immediately reported that this statement indicated strong support for the waste treatment industry.

The next game is Thursday, August 29 on the H3 field at the Rose Bowl. The opponent will be the Zephyrs, who beat us earlier in the season. Come on out and help give them a drubbing that they can think about all winter. There may be another game next week as well, stay tuned for updates from HOMER central.
