1 May 1997: Cyclones 16, HOMERS 23

Quotations from the chairman:

Bart: Mom, did you save the love letters Dad sent you?
Marge: Of course I saved them. Well, actually, there's only 1, and it's more a love postcard.
[back of postcard from Duff Brewery] Maybe it's the beer talking Marge but you got a butt that won't quit. They got these big chewy pretzels here and~~b~~~~ Five dollars??!!!? Get outta here
Bart: Wow, a side of Dad I've never seen.

    spectators: Samantha, Isabelle, Greg
Annette, Sheila, Tim, Jeff, Sue, Ron, Tony and Richard followed up the pleasant game with a nice dinner at Los Tacos. Conversational fodder: 150 people, airbags, chin music, Mars yard...

As for the softball game, the Homers beat a resilient Cyclones team 23 to 16. The Homers managed to get to the mercy rule in the seventh inning on the strength of a solid grand slam by Tony that scored Sheila, Annette, and Amy - I don't even dream that well. The other Homer living large was Ron, who kept the Homers in the game with two home runs and may have helped his home life by driving Sue home three times. Jeff also belted a triple over the left center fielder's head that he might have stretched for a home run except that there was only one out and the team was trailing - there is no [bcdfghijklnopqrsuvwxyz] in team.

Defensive play of the day goes to Tim for helping stem the Cyclones's big rally in the second. On a single up the middle, the runner from first advanced to second and rounded the base a few steps too far; from center field Tim launched a laser-guided missile to Richard, who easily tagged out the runner trying to return to the base. The other defensive standout was Amy, who made a nice running catch in right field and ended the game by tracking down a high fly ball to left.

A call to arms: next week's game is Monday, May 5, against the Cassini Grounders on field H3, which is west of the field we've been playing on. Already confirmed as no-shows are Tim (to Houston), Cheryl (Arizona), Annette (some non-DSN antenna), Martha (???), and Jeff (Spain). If you're a somewhat regular player and won't be at the game either, please tell me so that I can commence begging. If you're not regular, this would be a great time to make an appearance.
