14 July 1997: HOMERS 21, Deep Space Cadets 10

Neil Armstrong, upon descending to the surface of the moon: "This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Donna Shirley, on the success of the low-cost Pathfinder: "This is the basis for the whole future of planetary exploration." Homer Simpson, on the danger of being the first unqualified civilian in space: "The only danger is if they send us to that terrible planet of the apes. Wait a minute ... Statue of Liberty ... that was our planet! You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you - damn you all to hell!"

Oh, yes, the Homers beat the Cadets, as if that were in doubt.

Partaking of mediocre food and $1 margaritas at Los Gringos Locos after the game were Karen, Scott, Tim, Robb, Tony, Sheila, Annette, Ron, Sue, and Richard.

The Homers hit and hit and hit in this game, scoring runs in each of the first five innings. Richard and Ron hit back-to-back home runs twice in the game, and Rich hit a 2-run dinger in the third. However, the biggest blow of the game was a bases loaded triple by Tim in the fourth to put the Homers up by nine after the Cadets had cut the deficit to 11 - 8 in the top half of the inning.

The defensive play of the day goes to Scott Morgan. In the first inning, the Cadets loaded the bases with no outs when Randy Bartos hit a long drive to right-center. Two runs scored while Tim tracked the ball down and threw to Richard, who threw very high to home, where Scott leapt, caught the ball, and tagged out the runner trying to score from first. The other memorable play was the other bookend to Scott's: David made an over-the-shoulder catch of a foul pop-up to end the game.

CALL TO ARMS: Annette will miss the next game, while Richard and Robb will miss the next three. If you play regularly or semi-regularly, please let Jeff know if you will not be at the next game. If you are irregular and will be at the next game (please do!), let Jeff know. The next game is against the Goat Scouts, traditionally a very good team, on Tuesday on field H3.
