28 July 1997: Wild Turkeys 3, HOMERS 22

From: Sue Kientz

Yes, Thanksgiving came early this year for the HOMERS, as they roasted and toasted the Wild Turkeys 22 to 3 in a veritable turkey shoot of a game.

Spectators were Dave's two sons Brian and Aaron, Sheila and Tony's doggie Kona, and Sue as manager.

Although the first inning didn't hint at the easy victory, there were indications the Homers were in top form when they finished off the bottom of the inning with a 1-5-3 double play involving Ron, Tim, and Jeff. Other defensive highlights were the many put outs involving second base (boy was I glad to manage today!) and a pair of great catches by Amy to end the game. We also *almost* got two other double plays, and Tim threw out a runner at first all the way from right field (and nearly repeated the feat the very next play! When the ball sailed over Rich's head, catcher Scott was heard to say, "Since Richard is not here, *someone* had to do that...").

Offensively, the Turkeys probably considered us very offensive, since we went through a full line up three innings in a row. Homers came from Rich (a 2-run and a single blast), Tim (a 3-run HR), and Tony, who was running out a 3rd mercy-rule out (w/this HR Tony ties the rookie HR record, with Jesus. Thank you, Ron "Stat" Baalke). Everyone went home with a hit, and we were giving up a mercy-rule out from the third inning on (double mercy rule by the seventh).

FYI Ron (who although feeding me this info refused to write the report) also tells me that now we are 12-2 for the year, with 52 HRs hit already this year (last year we hit 53 for the whole season; our season record is 63).

The after game dinner was held at Roundtable, which didn't glean much more attendance than Crown City the week before, so no more disparaging comments about our beloved CC! Amid lots of MPF hype and martian decorations, Rich, Tim, Jeff, Karen, Scott, Ron, and Sue polished off two pizzas and various beer, both root and otherwise.

Next week's game is next Wednesday (August 6) at 5:30 versus the Gravity Fielders, again in field H3. We are still short some of our usual players, so please let Jeff know if you are not going to be there.
