19 August 1997: Planet X 7, HOMERS 28

As a payback to their June 2 loss, the Homers thrashed Planet X 28 to 7, their fourth victory in as many C league days. Fearing a letdown that would have allowed their opponents back into the game, the Homers played sharp softball through the entire game, even pegging a second mercy rule on Planet X at the end of the game.

Spectators included Barbara, Brian, Aaron, Mary, and Alex Pescaru, who finally found his way back from last year's RAAM. Dinner ended up at Round Table, where Ron, Sue, Scott, Jeff, Robb, Rich, and Annette let Richard bum a beer to loosen up (successfully) for his Sharks game.

The offensive star of the day was Tony, who nailed two nice home runs. However, Linda delivered the most important hit of the day, a three-run dinger in the first put the Homers up 5-zip. Finally, Scott ended the Homers offensive day with a grand slam in the seventh to put the team over the second mercy rule.

Defensively, Richard and Ingrid got toasted on back-to-back home runs in the second inning to let Planet X build some false confidence before crushing their spirits. On a positive note, Robb proved himself fully recovered from his Achilles and hammie and played solidly in his three innings at shortstop,

Our last game of the season is next Thursday, August 28, against the Voodoo Toad Fury, for the unofficial C league championship. I wish we had Homer colors so that after our victory, we could strut our stuff around their turf known as Crown City Brewery. As a subplot to the game, this year's home run contest comes down to a three-person race with Tony and Ron tied at 13, both trailing Richard by 1. But of course all three are bound by the Homerian pledge to put team goals ahead of personal ones.
