20 May 1998: Paper Tigers 17, HOMERS 23

Driving home late last night, in a mellow mood induced by beer, I turned on the radio to unwind and let the world come to me.

"Welcome to another hour of Love Songs on the KOST. The lines are open - 1-800-929-KOST for dedications to someone special in your life. We have a call. Hi, who's this?"

"Homer."

"Homer, where are you calling from?"

"Pasadena."

"Homer, is there a message you'd like to give to a special person out there?"

"Yes, I'd like to dedicate the next song to Annette. I want to tell her that even though we've only known each other for two years, and even though you're getting married this weekend, you've become a big part of me, about 10%, and I hope you'll remember where your priorities lie."

With the Homer world abuzz about the upcoming weekend, the team put one together for the 'Netter by beating the Paper Tigers 23 to 17. Though the Homers put the mercy rule on them twice, the Paper Tigers hung in until the very end, reducing the deficit from 14 runs to 3 before the Homers finished them off.

Dinner at Crown City: Joe, Jeff, Robb, Scott, Karen, Sue, Ron, Richard

Play of the day goes to Sheila for snagging a sinking line drive in right-center while sprinting forward, while Richard gets M. Congeniality for an over-the-shoulder catch of a line drive to left. Both also had good days offensively, as Sheila had two hits, including a solid double up the middle, while Richard had the only Homer dinger of the day. Other offensive stars include Joe, who had four hits on the day and has yet to make an out as a Homer, Mary, who had three hits and scored twice, and Jeff, who drove home runners from second and third in the fifth and the seventh innings, both times with two outs.

Freak play of the day goes to Evora for getting knocked over at 3B by two different Paper Tigers sliding into third (Chris Tran and Travis Imai, in case anyone is interested in a little payback). Evora edged out Karen, who, while straddling second base awaiting a throw from the outfield, had a Tiger slide head first between the wickets to complete his double. If you can picture it, insert your own joke here.

Next week's game may be videotaped and sold to PBS, which will soon air it as Home Run Derby '98. Pitching to the Homers next Wednesday, May 27 on field H3, will be the Bruisers.
