8 June 1998: Homers 20, GOAT SCOUTS 23

From: Sue Kientz <skientz@solstice.jpl.nasa.gov>

A bleak, cold, windy day it is when the HOMERS lose, and that's sure what today was. Snapping the HOMERS' 18 game winning streak, the Goat Scouts got the HOMERS' goat, mercy ruling them in the First Inning!! The HOMERS are tough, though, and they battled back, ONLY to come up empty in the bottom of an extra inning!!! Oh the humanity of it...

Dinner at Mihares: Richard, Jeff, Scott, Ron, Sue, Lisa, Annette, Daniel, and Tim.

Offensively, the HOMERS did manage to chip away that 10-0 lead the Scouts grabbed early on. Homers were dinged by Richard Chen (2: solo and 3Run), Rich Benesh (solo), and Jeff (2Run HR), and Rich also had a 2 rbi triple in the second. After the second when we finally tied them, the game stayed close, with no more than a 3 to 4 run differential. At the end of 7, the score was 20-20 and both teams chose to go for broke. Unfortunately, it was the HOMERS who came up short.

Defensively, once we fielded 10 people, we had 'em shut down 3 innings straight and most of the time only allowed 3 runs an inning after that. In the second there was a slo-mo double play involving Tony-Tim-Rich that did the job and ended the inning, and Annette made a dramatic inning-ending catch in the 8th. By then her new hubby Daniel was watching, flanked by canine spectators Casey and Kona -- way to show off your stuff, Annette!

New Feature: The DOH! player of the game this week is Richard "Deja Vu" Chen, for being thrown out TWICE at home plate. The first time he was trying to stretch a triple into a homerun (DOH!) and the second, when he tried to sneak home on what became a fielder's choice in the 5th (double DOH!!). Many thanks to Ron Baalke for reminding me of this as I wrote the report.

Next week's game has still not been finalized. Someone needs to go over to Crown City and sober Charlie up so he'll get the schedule done. Richard says we should know something by this Wednesday, and he'll of course keep us posted.
