The algorithm to determine the winner:

  • number of regular season games attended
  • if tied, irregular season games attended
  • if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season games
  • if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
  • Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting order, 2) the order of sitting out defensively, and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular game.

Dinner took place at Round Table. Present where: Andres, Becky, Bonnie, Jeff, Joe, Kim, Rich, Richard, Ron, Scott M., Scott S., Stephanie, and Sue

And, finally, these thoughts from Richard:

The Toads outbitched us for the win, and we let them. The key play:
    1. Homers down 2, 1 out in the 5th, Sheila on 3rd, Tony on 2nd.
    2. Joe hit a line drive to deep right that Kelly made an excellent catch on.
    3. Tony tagged up, realized that Sheila had drifted off 3rd, and stopped
    4. Sheila scampered back to 3rd, then ran home to score.
    5. The ball got away from the catcher, allowing Tony to score to tie the game.
    6. Sheila, unsure of whether she had actually touched 3rd during #4, went back to the base to touch it.
I don't think any one person in the park saw #4 definitively, as the focus of the play was the Toads' trying to get the ball in. Actually, Tony, the guy most affected by Sheila's running, was pretty sure she did touch. However, the Toads went ballistic at the guilty-looking act (#6), and put us on the defensive to prove that she did touch, and we were waaaaay too accommodating. It's the Toads, for god's sake. First off, they're our archrivals, Hector to our Achilles, Vader to our Skywalker (the last 5 movies never happened), Pierzynski to anybody else in baseball. Secondly, they practice arguing among themselves just to stay in verbal shape for moments like this. I'd estimate our odds of winning went from 55% (tie game late, we're home with 1 extra out) to 40%, as the two missing runs hurt and we couldn't churn through the lineup to get to our hot hitters (Richard Rich Andres Sheila Tony Joe Becky).

Where else can a softball team go scoreless in four out of seven innings, and still win 21 to 13? God bless JPL C league!

The Homers dominated this game from the beginning. After the first inning, the mercy rule was invoked and continued until the Titans had a small rally in the sixth inning. The Homers then got serious again and scored seven runs in the last inning. Game over.

The crowd cheered as Mary made two great catches, one in the 4th inning and one in the 6th inning. Other highlights included a nice double play in the second inning by Ron. Then catcher Daniel surprised the opponents by throwing a pick off catch to Sheila at first base. Finally, Rich made an impressive foul pop out catch in the 7th inning.

OOOUUCCCHHHHhhh. The (very in-shape) paper pushers and procurement types basically clocked us most of the game and returned the favor we gave them last time we met.

We had a good, but not good enough, "Rob is Here Rally" in the 7th. Richard hit the best, getting on base each time, with one ground rule double. Tony got 2 ground rule doubles and a triple. On the bright side Ron is playing 100% again, and our other injured typed managed to not re-injure any thing, so maybe next week won't see so many substitute runners and we'll clobber the Titans to make up for this week.... and maybe we'll even start scoring lots of runs EARLY in the game... visualize that!

Not much more to say. The homer-less Homers fell to 12-1-4 for the season.

    08 August 2006: Wild Turkeys 18, Homers 19

    From: Sue Kientz <suekientz@earthlink.net>

    > From the Wild Turkeys web-page:
    >8/7/06: Come out for tomorrow's game against the Homers. Their manager Richard promises not to be as soft on us as last time...that's a load of bull! We kicked their **ses! Let's go for two!

RICHARD: No, no, no, what I said was: "Every now and then, it's nice to let the Special Olympians win one, but that one win should be enough for the next 15 years."

It was shaping up to be a Defense of HOMERdom for the HOMERS, a game to set all things straight once the e-boasting had died down. Would they do it? Could they? "It's the Turkeys, for chrissakes, we HAVE TO," rang in many a HOMER brain pan.

In many ways it was a Typical HOMER game. Baseball has the Seventh Inning Stretch -- HOMER games have the Fifth Inning Kvetch. From the direction of the HOMER bench, one could hear it:

The HOMERS.. they were a dynasty!
            We SUCK!
Richard... I don't think he cares anymore...
            WE SUCK!
            We're not hitting
            *****WE SUCK*!!!!!!!******

The sideline doomsayers were lamenting (1) trailing the entire game to that point, (2) the fifth inning's 15-5 mercying, and (3) a pack of leotarded exercise contortionists all bent over and mooning the right handed batters. The HOMERS situation was more painful than the sun in the outfielders eyes, and that was BAD. The mood was so low, so discouraged, that Richard was even batting right-handed... yes, it was THAT BRUTAL.

And then, the bottom of the fifth, trailing 15-5 -- Rich started it off with a Homerun, which began a rally and saw 7 runs rack up for our heroes to make the score 15-12. We held the Turkeys to 3 at the top of the sixth to make it 18-12, and then came back with 7 more runs, to take the lead 19-18! The real kick in the teeth then came as Joe caught an impossible fly ball in left, and then two batters later Tony caught a liner for a double-play, tossing to Sheila who caught the runner off first. HOO-AHH! We won by ONE, 19-18.

Offensively, well, are the HOMERS very offensive? Some say yes. Today we had competition, but let it suffice to say that Tony, Richard, Rich and Ron each had homeruns (Ron was robbed of a second one by a claim that he did not touch third base... we are pursuing legal means to supoena the Turkey Video Tape). The first three batters in the lineup, Don, Ron, and Jeff, went 12 for 12.

Defensively, besides the stunner game-ending double play, Jeff battled blindness in RF to neatly snag a long fly ball, Mary had a few choice catches in RCF (where she just appeared during the first inning, glove and sunglasses on and ready to play), Don redeemed himself almost immediately for an overrun in LCF on one play to catch another fly ball, Becky made a great basket catch at third, and Mary, Andres and Tony combined for an out at the plate to dramatically end the sixth.

The only thing worse than kissing your sister is being run down from behind, tripping on tree root and having your sister jump on you to plant that big sloppy kiss. Well, that's what happened to the homers as the Eccentrics scored +4 over the last two innnings to force the tie ball game.

Before that little comeback, it was mostly an unspectacular game from an offensive standpoint with only singles and doubles to speak of. The major highlights came on defense as the homers posted 3 double plays by the tandems of Rich & Kim, Tony & Kim, and Tony & Sheila.

The author is not sure how well dinner was attended and the next game is slated for opening day 2007.

    25 July 2006: Homers 11, Dawgs 13

    From: Andres Castano <andres.castano@jpl.nasa.gov>

In this game, the Homers defense shone on two fronts. In the outfield, Joe (inspired by Bonnie) and Don covered the left and mid field while throws to Sheila at 1st by Tony, Richard and Rich covered the short game. These 2 combinations accounted for 10 to 12 outs easily. After having allowed a single run up to the 4th inning, the defense collapsed in the 5th to allow 11 runs from which the Homers were not able to recover. The result sets back the season record to 11-3, which actually is not bad. The offensive play of the game goes to the sole home run of the evening, by Tony. The defensive play goes to an A-league throw by Richard from the outfield to Sheila at 1st for an out.

Offense: The Homers hit well as usual, but most of the best hit balls were downgraded to ground-rule doubles because there were into the trees/dirt area in center field and right field. Steve hit a long shot down the left-field line what was called foul. There were no home runs, but 11 doubles hit in the game. Richard and Joe both went 5 for 5. Don, Annette and Andres were 4 for 5. Cecile made her Homers debut and went 3 for 4.

Defense: There were three running shoestring catches made in the game, first by Joe in left field, and again by Joe at 3rd base, and finally by Jeff in right field. Annette threw out two runners from second base and caught a long fly ball in the outfield. Sheila continues to catch everything thrown to her at first base.

Injuries: Rich didn't play due to a pulled back muscle. He now joins the list of the Walking Wounded that includes Scott (elbow), Ron (calf), Daniel (hamstring) and Kim (wrist).

After the game the HOMERS dinner at Pollo Puebla was attended by Ron, Sue, Scott, Richard and Joe.

The next HOMERS game is in a few hours, on July 25 versus the Dawgs on field HN (dirt field).

    12 July 2006: Homers 26, Paper Tigers 19

    From: Don Calkins <donald.calkins@jpl.nasa.gov>

Forgive me, I have to get this out now or I'm in trouble. Basically, it was the Joe Jacob show. At least until his "friend" left. It started with a spectacular catch in left field of a ball I was sure was going over his head. A last minute leap and he snagged. Then, at the plate, he crushed the ball into the tree. An inning or two later, he made a great catch on a foul ball. Then his girlfriend left and he came back to earth. That set the stage for the Rich inning where Rich accounted for two of the put outs. There was a great throw from Richard to Ron to get the out at home plate and a good play from Richard to Becky at third base. We should not forget the excellent work at first base by Sheila who is constantly doing her best to salvage outs from the errant throws that come her way.

Oh yes, before I forget - we had some offense in this game. Besides the Joe show mentioned above, Richard crushed a ball to centerfield and Don squeeked out a homer on a technicality.

On a down note, Ron appeared to re-injure his calf muscle and Daniel left the game with a pretty serious looking pulled muscle. We hope for a complete and instantaneous recovery for both.

Dinner was at Round table with attendees including: the Steadmans, Jeff, Richard, Scott, Becky, Andres, Joe "the Big Show", and Rich. I think...

Next game - tomorrow, 7/19 on some field.

    6 July 2006: Fringes 18, Homers 19

    From: Scott Morgan <scott.c.morgan@jpl.nasa.gov>

Due to a low Fringe count (7), the HOMERs played a hectic game - playing their own defensive positions plus pitching and catching for the Fringes. Every HOMER scored at least one run, except for Robb, who showed up late to hit the winning walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th. Don tested the ground rules in right field with 2 ground rule doubles and a ground rule triple. Only Tony hit a home run.

Defensively, HOMER catchers Jeff and Andres each retired Fringes on foul outs, Sheila made a good catch at first, and Rich barely avoided a nasty hip-check of Tony between third and short.

Despite giving it the "old college try" with a nice rally in the last inning, the Homers lost their second game of the season. While there was no one reason for this occurrence, there were several contributing factors. For one, many Homers were heard commenting that the field was not set up properly, with longer distances between the bases. According to some, it appears the longer than normal base path hurt the Homers more than the Turkeys. Another factor was age related. Some other Homers were heard saying that the Turkeys looked to have recruited several younger players - that the team demographic seemed to have shifted. Finally, and most noticeably, the Homers were severely lacking in home runs. Richard made the lone, lucky home run, only because of a missed throw at home.

I'm assuming the spectators included the "regulars", since at this point I really don't remember!

Dinner was at Tops, after Richard showed the first signs of Alzheimer's by leading us to a Shakey's restaurant that last opened its doors when Walnut was a grove of walnut trees. Those in attendance were Tony, Sheila, Haley, Alyssa, Joe, Rich, Richard, Becky, Andres, Ron, Sue, Jeff, and Robb.

The next game is tomorrow - information was already sent out by Jeff.

    21 June 2006: Homers 20, Voodoo Toad Fury 16

    From: Becky Castano <rebecca.castano@jpl.nasa.gov>

First day of summer and the HOMERS enjoyed it. The HOMERS took on the Toads and handed them their first loss of the year. This just two weeks after losing to the formerly winless Crawdads. It has been pointed out that since the HOMERS lost to the Crawdads - the team lowest in the rankings and the Toads subsequently lost to the HOMERS that, by transitivity, the Toads fall below the Crawdads.

The HOMERS played a very solid defensive game, not allowing the Toads more than three runs in any inning. It is a rare game that the HOMERS do not have at least a one inning defensive collapse. Some defensive highlights include Tony in the second inning catching two pop-ups. He was going for the all Tony inning when the third baseman decided to catch a pop-up to third rather than clear out for him. Also at short stop, Ron had a good catch and excellent throw to Sheila at first. Sheila made it look particularly spectacular by tangling her feet and going down, but still making the catch and staying on the base. Richard had several solid throws both in from the outfield and to first, but felt the need to make the obligatory overthrow into the street and one that nearly took off the head of the Toad safe at second base. In the last inning, Andres got the ball to the infield quickly and a zippy throw by Richard to Scott at home resulted in a run-down that was key to bringing to an end a dangerous Toad rally.

On the offensive side, home runs were scored by Tony, Steve, and Joe. Joe leads the offensive highlight real, hitting for the cycle and scoring every time he was up. In addition to a powerful home run, he had a collision with the catcher at home when a Toad decided to go for the runner rather than 'getting the out' at first. Joe was safe at home, as was the runner to first. As noted by Charlie at the game, the HOMERS came alive with two outs, scoring six runs in the first inning and six more in the sixth with two outs. The HOMERS were able to hit, but had a bit of trouble with base running. Richard twice reduced a double to a single by losing his footing turning first base. Ron had to uncharacteristically stop at third largely because he was jogging to first, not expecting a fortuitous Toad drop. Later in the game Ron sustained an unfortunate injury while running to second. Adding insult to injury, he was hit in the back by the ball coming in from the outfield while standing on the base. Andres gets the 'Duh' award of the week for not budging an inch from second base as he admired the play of Rich getting to first and Becky running home from third.

Richard's parents were in attendance at the game, but were noted to not always be alert to the game. A foul ball to the left field came close to hitting his father who was walking away from the game. Joe came running over from left field and attempted to divert the ball closer, when it became apparent that it was not going to hit him.

The HOMERS were delighted with the return of Annette to the line-up and the guest appearance of former regular Steve (along with his Emily and Anabel). The HOMERS also enthusiastically welcomed Stephanie on the sidelines in her HOMERS debut. Other spectators in attendance included Sue (not just spectating but also taking a turn at bat - thank you), Alyssa, Haley, Eric, Renee, and Cosita. Noticeably absent were Kim and Scott Steadmean - we send our condolences to Kim.

    Homer Highlights:

The Ol'e Homers started the game with a bang. At the end of the first inning we were tied 8 to 8 with the Goat Scouts. I'm guessing as exciting as it was the Homers felt they needed to do more. I wasn't there yet but I can tell by the number of runs in the second inning, 11 to be exact, we felt we needed to put a little space between us and the Goat Scouts. The Goat Scouts were unsuccessful at scoring that inning because we had Richard on the field. In the second inning Richard was able to show the scouts (not to be confused with the Goat Scouts) that he was ready for the big leagues. He impressed them by making all 3 outs. Maybe he just felt the quicker we got out of there the quicker he could get things ready for Stephanie's arrival. Either way it helped the team. In the 3rd and 4th innings we cooled off a bit. Between the two innings we only earned 1 run. However, in the last 3 innings the Homers earned 11 more runs for a total of 31 runs to the Goat Scouts 18. Thus adding another victory to the Homers list.

Homer's hitting home runs were Ron 1, Don 2, Daniel 2, Scott 1 and Mary 3. Oh alright I take back the Mary 3, I just wanted to see it in a report and also see how many of you were still reading to the end of the report. But I'm guessing that jolt to the system was better than a shot of Expresso or the cock-a-doodle-do of a rooster in the morning.

Witnessing the Homer onslaught were spectators Sue, Scott S, Alyssa, Haley, Annette, Eric, Renee, and Cosita. Dinner points at Crown City were awarded to a large Homer contingent of Jeff, Ron, Sue, Sheila, Tony, Alyssa, Haley, Richard, Rich, Joe, Andres, Becky, Scott S., Kim, Scott M, and Robb. The next game is Wednesday June 21st (aka Summer Solstice) against the Toads. Jeff or Richard are the points of contact if you are not available.

    6 June 2006: Homers 19, Crawdads 20

    From: Jeff Osman <jeff.osman@jpl.nasa.gov>

    6-6-6

The HOMERS should have seen it coming. The signs were everywhere. The number six foretold of disaster. Just by looking at the calendar the HOMERS should have known that they were in trouble. 666, the Number of the Beast. In this case, the beast took the form of a Crawdad. So it came to pass on a gloomy June evening that the HOMERS suffered their first loss of the season.

                       1 2 3 4 5
    HOMERS 2 6 3 4 4 19
    Crawdads 5 2 0 12 1 20

Despite the valiant effort of many HOMERS regulars and several HOMERS substitutes, the HOMERS just couldn't overcome the curse of the HOMERS, that one bad inning.

Special thanks goes out to Bobak, Eric, Fabian, and Lyna who answered the call of the HOMERS and helped out when we were shorthanded.

Despite the final score, there were actually some HOMERS highlights. Offensively, the HOMERS did have 5 home runs. Two each by Ron and Don early in the game, and then the monster 3-run blast by Becky in the top of the fifth to tie the game and give the HOMERS a glimmer of hope. Defensively, the star of the game was Kim with 3 or 4 good outs at second base in the second and third innings.

    The line-up:

After the game, dinner was held at Round Table with Sue, Ron, Becky, Andres, Scott M., Robb, and Jeff in attendance. Even here the number six was present to haunt the HOMERS. For some reason, the cost per person came out to be $6 per person instead of the usual $5. Coincidence? You be the judge.

Next week's game is on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 against the Goat Scouts on field H7. As usual, let Jeff or Richard know if you are going to make it.

    1 June 2006: Gravity Fielders 13, Homers 19

    From: Robb Warren <warren@amgen.com>

In the absence of verifiable evidence to the contrary, the following details shall be accepted as true and factual:

Offensively, the Homers continued to live up to their name, pounding out 6 round trippers. Contributing to the Homer barrage were Richard, Ron, Tony (2), and Rich (2). Joe and Mary were perfect from the plate, each going 4 for 4 as the Homers mercied the Gravity Fielders by the 3rd inning. Defensively the Homers were pretty solid, with the exception of the previously referenced 5th inning. Mary made a good catch in center field, Sheila made a nice scoop at first to save an errant throw, and Tony (when not getting eaten up by bad hops) played solid at shortstop. Following are details that are verifiable.

    Gravity Fielders 2 0 2 0 9 0 13

Spectators included Scott S, Alyssa, Hayley, and the ever attentive Cosita. Dinner points at Crown City were awarded to Scott M., Sue, Ron, Kim, Scott S, Jeff, Robb, Rich, Becky, Joe and Richard. Discussion revolved around quality of play relative to an individual who shall remain nameless.

Our next game is Tuesday 6 6 6 vs. the Crawdads. Sufficient participation is expected to be marginal, so please let Richard or Jeff know your status.

    17 May 2006: Bruisers 7, Homers 19

    From: Joe Jacob <joseph.jacob@jpl.nasa.gov>

A 12 run rally in the 4th inning helped to propel the Homers to a 19-7 win over the Bruisers. Both teams had a few big hitters, but Richard and Don led the charge for the Homers with homeruns. Except for one sloppy inning where the Homers allowed 5 runs, the defense was solid. Tony showed he still has cat-like reflexes, making a couple good plays at shortstop. Daniel at catcher pounced on a short infield hit and made a nice underhanded toss to Sheila at first to catch the runner off the base. Renee Celeste Limonadi made her debut this game to much fanfare. Nobody seemed to mind her decision to just watch this time since she's only about 3 weeks old and still not much bigger than the softball!

    11 May 2006: LA Radars 16, Homers 21

    From: Kim Steadman <kimberly.steadman@jpl.nasa.gov>

The game started out great and looked to be an easy win for the Homers but it almost turned into a sad, sad story. The Homers showed a ton of offensive power hitting 6 home runs ( Rich 2, Ron 1, Don 2, Richard 1) and scoring 21 runs. Every Homer got a chance at the plate in the 8 run first inning. Every Homer got a hit at some point in the game including Sue who got a hit in her only at bat before being relieved by Mary.

On the defensive side all was going great until the last inning when the defense allowed 10 runs! Never has one inning seen so many dropped balls. I bet everyone was pondering what beer to order at Crown City instead of concentrating on finishing off the pesky Radars. But somehow the Homers survived and came out on top with a 21-16 win.

Witnesses included Scott M (on the 15 day disabled list), Scott S, and Cosita.

Dinner was at Crown City and was attended by: Sue, Ron, Jeff, Rich, Becky, Scott M, Richard, Kim, Scott S, Andres, and Joe.

The next game is Wed, May 17th on H9 against the Bruisers. Please let Jeff or Richard know if you can't make it.

    2 May 2006: Homers 22, Eclectic Eccentrics 12

    From: Jeff Osman <jeffrey.w.osman@jpl.nasa.gov>

This week to show their support for the strong passion and sacrifices demonstrated by the large crowds participating in the recent "Day Without Immigrants", the HOMERS decided to hold a "Game Without Richard". The HOMERS vowed not to have Richard show up for their game, and not to have Richard influence their game in any way. There would be no taunts directed towards the other team. There would be no complaints about how we aren't as fast as we used to be, or how we can't hit as far as we used to. There would be no wild throws sailing over the first baseman's head.

Despite all these changes, the HOMERS managed to continue their winning ways, defeating the Eclectic Eccentrics 22-12.

                  1 2 3 4 5
    HOMERS 0 5 8 3 6 22

Spectators: Scott S. (score keeper), Alyssa, Haley, Cosita

Offensively the HOMERS got off to a slower than normal start when the first two HOMERS to bat hit screaming line drives right into the gloves of surprised Eccentric infielders. Fortunately things improved from there. Rich ended up hitting 2 home runs, and Ron added another. Joe went 3 for 3, all of his hits being doubles.

Defensively the HOMERS turned a double play in the bottom of the first inning when Tony chased down a fly ball, and threw to Sheila at first base to double off the wayward runner. The Eccentrics asked for mercy on this play, since the runner was actually a Cricket player, not a softball player, and may not of been aware of the rules. Acting manager Jeff, decided that since the HOMERS also occasionally have a Cricket player on their roster, and the HOMERS never ask for mercy in such situations that the play should stand as called. Besides, to change the rules in the middle of a game just wouldn't be Cricket.

The other highlight (lowlight?) of the night was the discovery that Joe's bat may not in fact be legal for use in the JPL Softball League. This discovery brought on several interesting discussions. The question was raised as to whether or not an asterisk will now need to be placed next to Joe's name in the HOMERS records. Joe was also heard to be asking of the availability of appropriate paints that might be used to obscure the offending words "multi-wall" and "composite materials" from the bat in question.

Dinner after the game was at round table attended by: Ron, Jeff, Kim, Scott S., Scott M., Becky, Andres, Rich, Joe, and Robb.

The next game is on Thursday May 11, against the LA Radars on field H9. As usual please let Jeff or Richard know if you can't make it.

    From: Joe Jacob <joseph.jacob@jpl.nasa.gov>

I was thinking about this incident some more and just realized that Mr. Don Calkins (herein referred to as "The Defendant") might actually share the blame for the fiasco with my bat (herein referred to as "Evidence #1"). "How so?" you may ask. Well, I'll tell you.

Up until last week the barrel of Evidence #1 was almost completely covered in white smudge marks from numerous impacts with the softball. The Defendant made a remark that I should clean those off because they might weigh down Evidence #1 and make its surface too slippery for a solid impact on the ball. I took The Defendant's suggestions to heart and diligently scrubbed Evidence #1 clean the day before the game. My claims are that The Defendant is negligent because:

    1. As a generally lazy housekeeper I would have never bothered to scrub Evidence #1 clean had The Defendant not advised me to do so.
    2. The offending words "multi-wall" and "composite materials" would have likely been completely obscured by white smudge marks had I not followed The Defendant's advice.
    3. Had the offending words been obscured, the illegal bat accusations would have never been made in the first place.
    4. The Defendant did not clearly indicate that his suggestions were tongue-in-cheek.
    5. The Defendant is an employee of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, so is undoubtedly both a rocket scientist and expert in the physics of bat-ball impact. Furthermore, he gave no indication that in making his suggestions he was speaking only for himself and not with the full backing of JPL as an organization.
    6. This action by the Defendant was -- without a doubt -- premeditated, since The Defendent has a vested interest in damaging my batting reputation in order to secure his own legacy in the HOMERS left-handed homerun records, knowing that he and I are currently the only southpaw batters on the HOMERS regulars roster.

I respectfully request HOMERS management to conduct a thorough inquiry into this matter.

    Thank you,

    Joe

    From: Don Calkins <Donald.W.Calkins@jpl.nasa.gov>

So it's come to this, has it? Well, since Mr. Jacob (herein known as the "guilty party") has besmirched my good name, I ( known heretofore as the "wrongfully accused") demand my right to defend my untarnished reputation. The gloves are coming off - it's time to go mano a mano!

I knew a crime was being committed by the guilty party. Having knowledge of a crime and doing nothing to stop it would make the wrongfully accused a party to the crime. My sense of fairness and the proper conduct of a true sportsman forced me to take action. The wrongfully accused had to put a stop to the guilty party's crime spree or there would be other innocent victims ensnared in his web of deceit and treachery. The wrongfully accused devised a clever ruse for the guilty party to implicate himself and thus have a chance to come clean and rid himself of the sense of shame he should rightly feel. Unfortunately, the guilty party, beyond shame and redemption, did not come clean until exposed by another. Yes, another! Another victim in a list of many.

And how did the guilty party react? With humility and remorse?!? No! He tried to bring the wrongfully accused down with him into the quagmire of guilt and shame and lies.

My unimpeachable character has been maligned by Mr. Jacob, a career criminal, unrepentant in his ways and a desperate and despicable malcontent. The fact that he has cheated for years to even get close to my impressive records demonstrates that this person, the guilty party, is lacking in the normal system of checks and balances that would prevent a normal human from sinking too low in their standards of personal conduct. The fact that the guilty party and the wrongfully accused share the same batting stance is mere happenstance and any talk of legacies or entries in the record book is irrelevant. In fact, in case no one noticed, the guilty party is not even a true left hander! Based upon this revelation, I move a new category of handedness, known as "soft" left handedness, be created to protect the records of the wrongfully accused from being surpassed by the desperately wicked and guilty.

Oh, and did I mention that, on top of all this, I think he's juicing too!

    27 April 2006: Dawgs 13, Homers 21

    From: Richard Benesh <richard.c.benesh@jpl.nasa.gov>

"We're As Good As We Can Be"

So proclaimed Homers PR Manager "Shoestring" Joe Jacob following the Homers conquest of the Dawgs. The Gauntlet has been thrown - look out you pretenders who think you can win the mythical C League title - "Shoestring" Joe has spoken!

The Homers started this one a looking a little cocky, starting only 9 players on defense in the first two innings, employing a spectator as temporary field manager and a one-armed man as bodyguard for the Homers rooting section. Amazingly, this defense appeared to work, as the Dawgs only managed two runs while the slumbering Homers offense slowly revved it's engine, relying on a solo homer by Tony in the first, and homers by Don and Richard sandwiched around Rich's double in the 2nd to scratch out four runs. Sue arrived in the third and borrowed Rich's glove when pressed into duty as the 10th Homer defender. Sue put the glove to good use, making two plays, although it may have been better had Rich kept the glove - during this time the one-armed man attempted to catch two foul balls threatening the Homer rooting section, successfully defending Haley and Alyssa, but failing to catch either pop-up. Jeff, however, failed to show the same team spirit when he declined to take one for the team by diving into the Homer bats to catch a foul ball during the 4th!

Sue's arrival also served as a wake up call to the Homer offense, which scored 14 runs during the following two innings, capped off by "Shoestring's" bases loaded single and Scott M's 3-run blast in the 4th inning. The last three innings were a showcase for the "We're as good as we can be" defense, with Ron making a nice play to Sheila at first, who stretched to make the out, Richard making accurate(!!!???!!?) throws to Sheila and Don making two nice catches on deep flyballs to preserve Andres' shutout inning in the 6th. The 7th inning featured more Homer defensive highlights, as knowing that Rich had taken the field pretending to be a first baseman, Becky and Ron fed Kim at second for two nice forceouts. Unfortunately, "Gopher Ball" Ganino was pitching, and the Dawgs scored 3 runs on a pair of homeruns before "Shoestring" earned his nickname by catching a flyball at his shoetops to end the ballgame (while causing coronaries among the Homer faithful). The details:

    19 April 2006: Titans 11, Homers 26

    From: Richard Chen <richard.chen@jpl.nasa.gov>

Homer:I want to tell you about the most wonderful place in the world: doggie heaven. In doggie heaven, there are mountains of bones, and you can't turn around without sniffing another dog's butt.
    Bart:Is there a doggie hell?
Homer:Well... Of course, there couldn't be a heaven if there weren't a hell.
    Bart:Who's in there?
Homer:Oh, uh... Hitler's dog... and that dog Nixon had, what's his name, um, Chester...
    Lisa:Checkers.
Homer:Yeah. One of the Lassies is in there, too. The mean one. The one that mauled Jimmy.

Some sad news, Homer brothers and sisters: as the last of us lingered on the field, slowly gathering kids and equipment before heading to dinner, Sheila let out this bombshell: Kona died on Monday. She reached up for a piece of meat, but then just left us. OK, I admit that that sharp-clawed crotch-sniffing lap-invading mutt bugged the heck out of me usually, but there was never a sweeter, friendlier dog.

Some hopeful news now: Annette and Daniel expect their second child next week, plus Annette attended the game after weeks of doctor-ordered bed rest. Daniel's a rather groovy fellow, so in the parlance of the 60s, it's the cycle of life, man - one soul leaves, another arrives. Cosmic. However, to truly complete the cycle, we'll have to insist on the child's name being "Kona Limonadi". "Homer Limonadi" is also acceptable.

And for truly solid news, the Homers stormed back from a 6-0 deficit after 1 inning to beat the Titans 26-11. Offensive star of the game was Daniel, who got the Homers on the board with a double to drive in Rich, then hit a towering two-run homer to left in the third to give the Homers their first margin. Ron, Rich, and Robb went a combined 11-for-11, while Sheila and Kim each pitched in two hits. Don hit the first Homer homer of the year, and Richard, Joe, and Ron also got on the board.

The defensive play of the game came from sub Chris Mattmann. In the fifth, Richard at SS turned and chased a texas leaguer, which hit him in the shoulder and bounced up. Chris in LF, running in on that play, caught the ricochet for the first out of the inning (it would be classless to mention that he used up 20% of the batting outs). Also, Sheila at 1B fearlessly got putouts on hard throws from Richard.
