In a hospital in Redlands, CA, a couple of HOMERS waited to receive a little bundle of joy just a few days ago. At last the nurse came out holding a tiny form wrapped in a blanket. Elated now-parents Andres and Becky Castano took their first peek at little daughter Sofi. As they marveled, Andres (unable to contain his delight) said, "Welcome little Sofi -- now that you've arrived here on planet Earth, where would you like to go?" And like a true Castano, precocious Sofi actually said, "I want to go to the HOMER GAME!"
And so she did! Just as the HOMERS thought their commanding lead over the LA Radars was slipping away, one they maintained through 5 innings but which was in danger of upset after inning 6, Becky and Andres brought The Lucky Charm, 4-day-old Sofi, onto the scene and into our hearts. Inspired, the HOMERS got 15 hits and scored 13 runs to squelch the Radars, who failed to rally in the bottom of the 7th. The only one disappointed was Richard, who had begged the parents to name their little girl Maggie.
Offensively, the HOMERS managed something they are usually pretty well known for -- HOMERS. Slim led off the game with a homerun, and later Richard hit a 3-run HR and Daniel hit a 2-run homer. Ron got 3 triples (though no. 2 became an out as he naturally tried for home and was cut down at the plate). Bridegroom Joe showed that wedding plans aren't getting him down, as he got on and scored in each inning, including twice in big inning no. seven (Score big now, Joe, 'cuz soon you'll be married!). In fact, everyone reached base at least one time.
Defensively, the HOMERS seemed perfectly placed from inning one. Stand-out plays were the Wittman-Warren Double Play in the fourth, with Mary snagging a line-drive at 2nd and doubling off the runner at 1st by throwing to her main man Robb. Liz got a few key outs at 3rd, most notably in the third (2 plays). Scott, Joe, and Richard ruled the outfield, catching a bunch of flies for outs. And Ron threw to catcher Daniel who defended the plate to get the lead runner out in the second.
Thanks to substitute HOMERS Joe "Slim" Mrozinski, Liz Beck, and Jessica Hausman for filling in the HOMERS' depleted ranks. We really appreciate you coming out and having fun with us.

The next game is Tuesday against the TOADS, field HN (the dusty one). Please let Jeff or Richard know if you can't make it. But wait, you HAVE to make it. It's the TOADS for crying out loud! And our last game of the season.
Sorry, the details of this game got flushed, as a few of us played another right afterward. My personal highlight was Beth's playing - her last game was on June 26, 1997! Maybe I can get Mark Parisi to come play sometime.
Good: Scott and Joe were a good engine in the middle of the order, each getting on base safely every time up, and Mary and Ron were nearly as good, making only one out each. We played good defense from the third inning on, and even the first two weren't egregiously bad.
Bad: attendance. For whatever reasons, we had 1 no-show, 1 last-minute cancellation, 1 same-day cancellation. I contacted 12 people on the day of the game to try to field a full team - Beth was good enough to come through for us. As for the people who did show, at game time we had 6 players plus Sue and Annette, and at 5:45 we finally got players 7 and 8, enough to play.
We have a great bunch of people on this team, but, man, do some of you realize how high maintenance you are? Sheesh, if I were dating you, I wouldn't be dating you.

Our next game is Monday, August 20, against the Radars. Please let Jeff or me know if you can't make it.
From the beginning it didn't look good. The Homers began the game with only seven players, taking the field minus one outfielder, second base, and catcher. It was Daniel, fresh from a relaxing two-week vacation in Michigan, who really stepped up to the plate.literally and figuratively. Coming to the game expecting to play catcher quickly faded when it became apparent we couldn't field a full team. Daniel asked not what the Homers could do for him, but what he could do for the Homers.leading to his debut as pitcher. And what a fine job he did. He knew to cover both first and home plate when needed, along with the rest of the infield. This shocking play caused Richard to yell several times from the outfield "What is going on? Who are these players?" Was it because of this heads-up play that the Homers held the Paper Tigers to only one run the first two innings? Was it destined to get ugly regardless of the number of players? Did the Paper Tigers feel sorry for us with only seven players? Sadly (or not), we'll never know the answers. It was during the top of the third when the Homers were finally able to field a full team. And, coincidence or not, this was the inning that the Paper Tigers earned ten runs. The Homers were also mercied twice during the game, which caused some confusion among the Homer fielders as to how many outs there actually were. There were some other positive moments during the game in addition to Daniel's debut at pitcher; one of these included his three-run homer in the 6th inning. Other highlights included some nice plays by Ron at shortstop and a superb two innings as DH by Rich (goaded into playing by Richard who was either going to feel bad if Rich got hurt or mad if he made outs -- luckily neither happened!)
Spectators included Sue (also as field manager), Alyssa, Haley, Annette, Eric, Renee, and Cosita.
Dinner was at Round Table and I figure those in attendance included Jeff, Richard, Ron, Sue, Rich, Becky, and Andres. You'll have to check with Homers management to be sure.
The next game is Monday, August 13th. Please let Richard or Jeff know if you won't be there.

Homers defeat LAMP Fringes
The Homers extended their winning streak, defeating the LAMP Fringes. Executing a new offensive strategy, the Homers effectively discouraged their opposition with a 6 run first inning followed by a 10 run second inning combined with reasonable defense. Although the LAMP Fringes made defensive adjustments, their will was broken. Ron led the offensive onslaught with two home runs. Both went in the direction of right/right center. For his first, Ron hit the ball perfectly such that the ball rolled to the edge of the hill, but not over. He attempted the same feat in the second inning. Although it looked to many spectating that he had a little too much on it, he was saved by the outfielder who picked the ball up just before it could go over the hill. Don also had a home run, the old-fashioned way, in which he just powered the ball down the middle over everyone's head. By the six and seventh innings, the Homers began to feel more generous. Ron, attempting a sacrifice fly, hitting a ball well into the outfield where it was caught. Although Don on third could have tagged up and scored, he did not budge not wanting to interrupt his pleasant conversation with the third baseman.
Defensively the Homers were fairly solid. As we have come to expect, Sheila was very reliable at first. Tony had several nice catches on the infield including grabbing a low line drive as pitcher in the second inning. While Richard did not have any overthrows to first, he did not let us down on the acrobatic attempts to make a play. In the fifth, from short stop he attempted an over the shoulder catch of a pop-up behind second base. After a spectacular juggling display, the ball plopped to the ground. Jeff Kent on the Dodgers may have been taking notes. He had a nearly identical situation on Saturday and was able to make the play look easy.
Thank you to Melissa for showing up on short notice when it appeared we would be short on women.
Dinner at Crown City was attended by Ron, Andres, Becky, Rich, Richard, Jeff, Robb, Kim, Scott S., Scott M., and Sue.
The next Homer's game is Wednesday, August 8 against the Paper Tigers on field HS. Please let Jeff or Richard know if you will be unable to attend.

After more than a year here in the U.S., I have discovered that Richard exaggerates a lot. From watchinig the game today, I know that the following are untrue:

Joe Jacob's imminent wedding continues to be the talk of the town, and during the games, a distraction that has prevented us from rising to the occasion as the Homers have often done in the past. "Richard.. look where you are throwing", "good hit!!.. go to third, go to third" and "we need a pitcher, not a belly itcher" have been replaced by "I wonder if I can come to the wedding wearing a traditional japanese attire.. I have Sumo briefs", "is it true that Rich will be marrying Joe and Bonnie?" and "..oh my gosh.. I was also planning to get them a toaster!". We are sure that the Homers will return to their usual steamroller attitude as soon as Joe and Bonnie get married. Offensive plays: Becky hit a triple that surprised the until-then unsurprised Titans. Tony, in a spark reminescent of the good old days, scored two home runs. Ron was unable to score a home run and decided to take the issue with a Titan that tried to steal second. Although Ron insists that he accidentally stepped on the offending player's glasses lost during the slide, several witnesses point out the inconsistency that Ron stomped on the glasses three times yelling "die die die!!!". The jury is still out on this one as the witness report is inconclusive.

After the game the HOMERS dinner at the Round Table was attended by Ron, Joe, Sue, Jeff, Scott M, Rob, Richard, Becky and Andres. Scott M., in spite of his complaining about the Round Table guys messing up the order and getting us a large Hawaiian (which supposedly he despises), was observed consuming industrial quantities of it.. a few slides were saved for some of us who do like Hawaiian.
The next game is on Monday July 16.
DOH! SOoo close!
In the annual (or so) clash between Toads and the Homers, we had an epic back and forth with the lead changing hands 4 times. Alas, the Toads took the game in the last inning. It was a fun but un-usually quite game (relatively speaking that is) - no bullhorn, loud music, or much other noise coming from the Toads bench... kinda odd actually. Are we all getting so old that the Toads are not even obnoxious and rude anymore?? what is the world coming to?? This must stop! We want our old Toads back! Oh, and where was Richard??
Defensive highlights included consistently good connections between the Ganino SS-1B combo, and a nice 6-3-5 (SS / Tony - 1st / Shiela - 3rd / Rich) double play in the 5th which kept the Toads scoreless that inning.
Offensive highlights included a lone home run by Joe in the 2nd, and doubles or ground rule doubles every time they were at bat for Don and Tony, and 2 other homers that got on base each at bat.

HOMERS management has been getting nervous. The paparazzi have moved on from the Anna Nicole Smith circus, and show some signs of being bored with Paris Hilton. If the HOMERS didn't start turning around their season soon they might be the next target caught is the over-hyped media spotlight. Imagine the headlines. "HOMERS Have a Loooooooosing Season!", or "Kobe says 'Trade me, but PLEASE not to the HOMERS!'", or maybe even "HOMERS Management Fired by the Team" (wait, maybe that last one isn't so bad).
Fortunately we may never have to face that prospect. The HOMERS returned to their historical form and crushed the Crawdads!

Special thanks go out to Charlie and Chris G. for filling in for the missing B-league players. Also a welcome back to Mark and Chris C. for keeping the HOMERS Australian connection alive.
Offensive highlights included the return of the home run. The HOMERS scored six of them after an extended drought: Mark (1), Ron (1), Chris G. (2), Joe (1), and Tony (1). The other item to be celebrated was the HOMERS batting around in the first inning. Every one of the HOMERS players ended up with a muliple hit game.
Defensively, except for the sixth inning, it was one of the stronger games the HOMERS have played in a while. Special kudos go to Chris G. and Sheila for a HOMERS double play. Also of note was Jeff's play at third base in the 4th, He didn't embarrass himself and actually made two easy force outs at 3rd. (Well, that was a highlight to me at least!)
A small HOMERS dinner celebration was held at Crown City after the game. In attendance were: Jeff, Joe, Ron, Sue, Mark, Chris C., and Charlie.
Next week's game is Tuesday against the Toads. Maybe we can convince Charlie to pitch for the Toads! As always let Richard or Jeff know if you can't make it.
The Homers were without their B League players due to a scheduling conflict, but added capable substitutes from the Toads (Charlie) and the Bruisers (Eric) in this face off against a friendly and youthful Procrastinators team. It seemed as if the psychological impact of learning that the OLDEST player on the opposing team is only 27 years old caused the Homers' aging bones to creak ever louder in this futile struggle. Oh, the horrible creaking of the bones! The sound will haunt my dreams!
Despite their name, the Procrastinators wasted no time in taking an overwhelming lead over the Homers by hitting all the gaps in our defense to score 12 runs in the first inning. The rest of the game was actually pretty close as the Procrastinators won by a score of 24 to 14. The Homers' offensive highlights included impressive triples by Andres and Eric, and Joe hitting the ball into the trees for ground rule doubles all four times at bat. On defense our most memorable play was Eric at shortstop and Sheila at first base combining for a double play.
Thanks to Charlie and Eric for subbing, even though some of the Homers seemed discombobulated at the change that we actually had to cheer FOR Charlie this time! Thanks also to the Procrastinators for showing that they are a fun new team. They even grilled hot dogs at the game (hint to Homers management . Their manager even approached us after the game to apologize for their perfectly legitimate double play where Joe M. (who subbed for the Homers a couple games this season) made a leaping catch and literally fell on 3rd base to catch Sheila about two inches off the base for the unassisted double play (well, it was assisted by gravity, but that was about it!). Also, one of their women, who got hit in the ankle by a hard-hit line drive by Mary, basically thanked Mary for what she considered a badge of honor that she was looking forward to showing off at work the next day.

The end of the game oddly lacked drama as Richard, Becky, Don, Rich, Joe, and finally Sheila all reached base safely to push four across with no outs. Note that Don's hit was a monster shot to right, while Joe got the benefit of a close call at 1B which in the end didn't matter.
Welcome to Margaret, a summer hire from Duke working with Frank Picha. She, Sheila, Don, and Tony made only one out apiece, while Richard and Rich reached safely every time up. Rich at 3B assisted to Sheila perhaps 4 times, Becky at 2B nicely caught a looper while running into RF, and Richard in the 7th - well, that was the immodest play of the day. With 4 runs in, no outs, and runners on first and second, Richard at SS fielded a hard grounder just to his left, tagged the baserunner for out 1, stepped on 2B for out 2, and threw to Sheila to complete the triple play.
Next week's game is Monday on the dirt field against the new team the Procrastinators. We have a ton of missing people. So far, we expect 6 men (Jeff, Ron, Joe, Don, Daniel (maybe), Charlie) and 4 women (Becky, Sheila, Kim, Margaret). If you're on that list and your status changes, please let Jeff or me know. FYI, Annette is out for the year.

On a dreary day, the Homers played a dreadful game, not managing to score for 3 innings and losing to the Goat Scouts. The awful details, (as best that can be deciphered from hieroglyphics that passed as the score sheet):

As the evening sun slowly set in the west the Homers came out hoping to add another victory to their list. However, with the sunny glare in the eyes of the players along with the gnats and plant fibers blowing in the evening breeze things didn't get off to a good start.
The LA Radars were the first to score taking the lead 3 to nothing in the first inning. The Homers, determined not to get to far behind, were able to pick up 2 in the second inning. The LA Radars feeling the pressure with a one run lead decided to pick up 3 more in the second, thus making the score 2 to 6. Since the Homers know they have the ability to keep themselves in the game they put their bats to the balls and picked up 6 runs in the 3rd inning, finally going ahead of the LA Radars. Then the LA Radars obtained 3 more runs. However, they may have had another had Richard not made a spectacular throw to home, ending on his knees in prayer. But that wasn't necessary because Kim made the catch getting the runner out at home. Let's all say a big "thank you" for that great play. As the game continued the score was 13 to 12 Homers by the end of the 4th inning. Whew, but still no time to take a break. If we were going to win this one against the good players of the LA Radars we were going to keep our heads in the game. In the 6th inning we had to keep our eyes on Joe in left field. He claims the softball got stuck in the tree and it required the use of tossing his glove into the tree to get it down. However, Homers players suspect that it was actually just nervous energy due to his upcoming nuptials. At least it didn't take more than the glove. By the end of the 6th time was running out and the slowly setting sun was now behind the trees. Due to circumstances beyond our control the game was halted after 6 innings in a tie game 15 to 15.
Star category goes to Richard for being the only home run, a 2 run home run. Congrats to you Richard.
Dinner points were awarded to Ron, Jeff, Rich, Richard, Becky, Joe, Andres, Scott and Robb.

To be honest, I don't remember much of the game. I wasn't really paying attention to the details. You see, I had no idea I would be writing the report due to a newly established tradition - he who blows the game, writes the report. I do remember it was Mother's day at Humungous Park. And it was cold. Sue's Mother came out to see the game as well as Tony's Mom. Richard found some long lost power and hit a home run and Becky burned the center fielder. Don hit one over the trees in right field for a convincing "double". The Homers fell behind big in the second inning but caught up by the fifth. It was decided by both teams to end early due to other engagements. The stage was set - Homers were one run ahead and the Eccentrics were up to bat. My memory starts getting fuzzy at this point....Two outs, Homers ahead by one, runners on second, maybe third as well. Easy grounder to left field. Don swooped in for the scoop but scooped air instead of the ball which kept going in a straight line, deeper and deeper into left field as predicted by Issac Newton. The runners score, game over - Eccentrics win. Don is immediately inducted into the Homer's Hall of Shame. Sorry - I'll do some grounder drills.
Special thanks to Liz and Joe for helping out the team. Again.

There are events that occasionally occur within the Homer family that transcend our day to day activities. These events tend to unite true Homers, and serve as a reminder of what brings real meaning and perspective to our lives. We have just such an event in our future, that of Joe and Bonnie's wedding. Homer's historically have rallied behind their teammates (such as in the last Homer game.... More on that later), and have never shirked their responsibilities for lending a hand to a fellow Homer in need. It occurs to me that we, as the Homer family, can lend a hand to Joe and Bonnie during this happy yet potentially chaotic and hectic time. What better way than to help them plan their big day, and provide some input on important decisions that they are contemplating. Please take a moment from your busy schedule and fill out the following survey, then mail them to Joe to help he and Bonnie make these critical decisions.
And now, for the game details...
The Homer game was truly one of epic proportions. After spotting the Turkeys a 10 run lead by the second inning, the Homers came from behind and rallied to win 19-18. In a moment reminiscent of the 1988 World Series, the rally was culminated in the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple by Rich (playing Mike Davis, only not settling for a walk) and a game ending, walk-off ground rule double by Tony (playing Kirk Gibson, but not needing to hobble around the bases)! Other offensive highlights included four home runs by Don (OK, so three of them were ground rule doubles, but they were 'virtual' home runs), and timely hitting by virtually all of the Homer faithful. Defensively the Homers played pretty solid with the exception of a few 'creative' fielding miscues in the 6th inning. Defensive notables go to Liz for her outfield play, Mary for a catch in right while battling a very difficult sun (an assist to Don for positioning assistance), and some scrambling plays by Joe M at short, who also demonstrated a strong and deadly accurate arm (Richard, please take note). A Homers Thank You to Joe M and Liz who subbed and provided key defensive and offensive help.

Is it really spring already? Time for HOMERS softball again? Where has the time gone?
Yes, it is once again it is that time of the year, and once again the HOMERS have come out strong. Even though we are all getting older, the HOMERS continue to display their softball skills. The first victim of those skills this year were the Bruisers. In a rain shortened game (okay, so maybe it was a sprinkler shortened game) the HOMERS got their first victory of the season 23-4.

Offensively the HOMERS lived up to their name, but just barely. Ron got the first home run of the season in the 3rd inning, followed by one in the 4th inning from Richard. Don might have had a home run on a high fly ball to right, but due to the short field in right, and the ground rules for that field, it ended up just a double. The rest of the HOMERS offense came from good solid hitting from the rest of the team. Everyone had a least 1 hit, and seven of the thirteen HOMERS in the batting order got on base every time they came up to bat.
Defensively there MUST of have been highlights. After all, it is not often you hold a team to just 4 runs. Unfortunately, none of those highlights made it to the HOMERS score sheet, so you will all just have to rely on my feeble memory. I seem to recall a couple of good throws from Richard at shortstop to Sheila a first (one of which didn't even require Sheila to stretch for the ball!) Rich made a couple of good stops at third, and almost everything hit in the air to the outfield was caught.
Dinner at Round Table was attended by Jeff, Ron, Richard, Becky, Rich, Joe, Annette, Daniel, Eric, Renee, Andres, Mary, Robb, Scott, Kim
