What can I say? We LOST. To the TOADS. But there is hope!
Right now on Capitol Hill, one little-known line item in the Economic Bailout about to be signed into law, will inject 90 billion HOMERUNS into HOMER coffers. HOMERS have been slumping with actual homeruns all year, and it has now been determined that the mortgage downturn (which came as certain HOMERS were finally buying houses) has led to this depressed state among the team. With any luck, by next season, the U.S. ecomony (and HOMER ability) will upswing (sha-WING!) for the better.
And now to the actual game. HOMERS never led but kept it close until, well, the second inning when the TOADS pulled ahead. Slim (in the innings he played in OUR game) threw to Kim for an important out in that inning, with Joe catching a fly and Richard gunning down the runner from short for out 3. Unfortunately by inning 3, they were mercying us. Daniel got a key 3rd out in the outfield in inning 5, and Mary got a surprised glove on one in the 6th. A memorable stop was Andres at 3rd, who looked as surprised as we did when he snagged a ground ball bulleting his way.

One last thing: Despite this loss, we should all be proud of a great season played. (How great? I'm sure Ron Baalke will send you those statistics soon.) Plus, all of you are fun to be with, and I enjoy spending every game with you. Offseason I just don't know what to do with myself, with no one around to ask me those incessant questions like "What's the score?" and "Where am I again?" and "Did you see Robb is here now?" and "Did you see Mary is here now?" and "Why did you put X at Y???" :>
The next HOMERS game is next year sometime. If you psychically know what day that will be, let Richard or Jeff know if you can't make the game.
See you next year!

It was a game that was reminiscent of a President Bush speech in the twilight of his political career. No one (maybe it was just me) was paying much attention and as long as we didn’t do anything stupid, the Homers would easily win this game, just like the Bush Presidency, would soon end without causing further harm to the world. We didn’t and it did. Final score – Homers 15, Wild Turkeys 7. The score sheet is incomprehensible – I can see there was a double play in the 6th inning. That must have been the one play I really do remember. Turkey runner on first, ball hit to short stop Tony who snagged the ball, ran to second to easily get a force on the runner and then threw the ball to Sheila for the double play. On occasion, that husband-to-wife throw can be a nail biter with the throw ranging between a shotput across the infield to a rocket coming from any direction to any location but it was a good, clean throw - a Ganino-Ganino double play. I also read something in the score sheet about Daniel falling sometime between the 2nd and 4th innings so let’s say Daniel fell in the third, presumably, a catch was involved. I don’t see (or remember) any home runs on the score sheet. The Turkey left fielder was very good and knew where to play and how far back when the big bats came up. Liz continues to dazzle with her speed and speaking of bats, Don’s only contribution with his bats came from the fact that he brought them to the game.
The usual suspects were in attendance.

Last game is today against the dreaded TOADS.
On August 5, 2008, I told myself I would be the quickest rookie HOMER player to get out a game report. As it turns out, I'm just not very honest with myself sometimes =).
The HOMERS decided to give the L.A. Radars a good game, but a horrible ending, as Don heroically homered to end the tied game in walk-off fashion, 24-23.
Don's blast was the 6th HOMER homer, started off in the 1st on back-to-back shots to left by Slim and Tony. Partial credit is given to Ron who pinch ran from home plate on injured Slim's homer, and came home to Slim's chanting of "That's my homer, that's my homer!" Ron again touched 4 bases on Slim's 2nd homer of the game in the 3rd, then decided he'd hit one for himself in the 4th with a shot to center. Ron ended the night with 19 total bases and 4 runs . Joe and Don, who usually rack up ground-rule-doubles that have more than enough distance to bring them home, hit homers 5 and 6 on the night.
Honorable mentions in the homer run category go to: Jeff, who's might liner in the 4th got past the outfield, yet who's mighty speed couldn't carry him past 3rd base =). I'm sure he was just setting himself up for the cycle, as the triple is the hardest hit to get.
Perfect days were had at the plate by: Jeff (3 singles, 1 triple), Don (single, 2 doubles, homer), Joe (2 singles, homer), Slim (2 homers, 1 single) and Becky (1 single, 1 triple).
Liz made a good play deep in the hole at 3rd to end the Radars comeback attempt in the last inning, setting the stage for Don's game-ender. We also *almost* turned 3 double plays against the speedy Radars. That's a highlight, right?

July 28, 2008: The Homers made short work of the Eclectic Eccentrics when they took a 16-0 "double mercy" lead in the first inning and never looked back. When all was said and done, the Homers recorded a convincing 19-9 win over their opponents. Robb showed that he still has cat-like reflexes when he sprung to catch a hard hit line drive at third base in the fourth inning. Unfortunately he was also involved in a less glorious play at pitcher as he and Jeff at catcher resembled statues and didn't move a muscle as a simple pop up between the two of them fell to the ground. They can't be blamed for falling asleep at the switch in this game, which was never really competitive.

The next homers game is on Tuesday, August 5 against the LA Radars on field HS. As usual, let Richard, Jeff, or Kim know if you can't make it.
Though the Homers never trailed in the game, and even mercied the Goat Scouts a few times, they knew no lead is safe against a team like the Scouts. Both teams scored runs in every inning of the game. A 14-3 lead in the 3rd, dwindled to 21-16 by the 5th inning. With a 28-18 lead going into the bottom of the last inning, the Goat Scouts made a valiant comeback attempt by scoring 8 runs, but the Homers prevailed with the final score of 28-26. The Homers win their 3rd game in a row and improve their season record to 8-4.
The game was a slugfest, with home runs flying out all over the place. Nearly everyone in the Homers lineup hit a home run as 10 home runs were hammered out along with 11 doubles. The Goat Scouts hit about 6 or 7 home runs as well. The 10 home runs were the most home runs since the Homers hit 12 in a game during 2000 season.. Home runs were hit by Slim (2), Richard (2), Don, Ron, Liz, Scott, Robb and Becky. Sim's home run in the 1st inning was a mammoth shot over the outfielder's head. Becky shoes went flying off her feet on her home run in the 4th - the first shoeless home run since 1993. A milestone was reached when the Homer's 1000th home run in team history was hit by Scott in the 3rd inning. Slim and Richard were also both perfect at the plate, going for 4-for-4.
The only double play was a soft liner hit up the middle and caught by Ron, who then threw to Scott at 3rd to double up the runner there.

What an amazing game! Down by 3 runs at the top of the 7th, the Homers rallied to score 4 before finishing the inning. Starting with Jessica, there were a total of seven singles in a row before the Homers made their first out. With nerves of steel, the Homers then went back out into the field, only leading by one run...friend and foe alike wondering if they could keep their only lead of the game. Exhibiting classic, old school defense, the Homers had 2 outs when Slim made a running, backwards catch behind shortstop to end the game. Another memorable play was when Liz, from right field, threw out a runner heading to second. While there were no homeruns, Ron got on base each time with a single, double, and a triple. Scott (twice) and Don also hit doubles. A big thanks to Slim for helping us out!

I've tried to think of a witty introduction that ties our softball game to some current event, but I've drawn a blank. So instead I will do a shameless plug to help a blood drive that I've been involved in organizing. Two months ago my friend Leslie was diagnosed with leukemia. She is the mother of a 3 year old boy and was 24 weeks pregnant with a little girl when given the news. She has since had numerous transfusions of whole blood and platelets that have literally saved her life and allowed her blood counts to be high enough for her to continue with the pregnancy. Once the baby is born, she will begin chemotherapy. When her friends asked her what they could do to help out, her biggest wish was for us to spread the word about how important it is for people to donate blood. We have teamed with St. Joseph Medical Center to do a blood drive in Leslie's honor. It will be on Tuesday, July 15 from 2pm to 8pm in the auditorium of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (7315 Apperson St, Tujunga). Walk-ins are welcome, but if possible you should make an appointment by contacting Sandy at (818)847-4469 or sandy.hibarger@providence.org (she can also answer any questions about health guidelines). If it has been at least 56 days since you last donated blood, please consider giving again to help save a life.
Now that I am done with the public service announcement, I can proudly say that the HOMERS trounced the Titans. We were weakened by the loss of many of our strongest players to a B league game, but fortunately the Titans were hit even harder by conflicting games. We began the game having to loan them a catcher, but soon a very vocal bicyclist stopped to watch the game. It didn't take long for the Titans to recruit him and add him to their roster. I know that there were a few spectacular hits and catches, but since Sue wasn't around to write any notes on the score sheet, I can't remember the details.

As I write this report on the morning of Sunday the 6th, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are about to start their 4th set in the Wimbledon's final. The similarities between the match between these two titans and that of the homers vs. toads come to mind. Among these, similarities in the quality of the play, speed of the contenders, pedigree of the event and money involved, are not found. Still, if you add a couple of decades to both Roger and Rafael, a healthy dose of beer and a regime of 10 hours a day in front of a computer screen, you will find a homer at heart. The toads attacked early with 5 runs in the first inning. The homers spent themselves holding the toads while offering an uninspired offense. Once drained, the toads smelled blood and bidded us farewell with another 5 runs that added humiliation to injury.
Defensive plays: Richard caught a couple of flys from homer-turned-toad traitor Steve Brodberg, who was turning green during the match. Sheila, as usual, shone in 1st base. Scott, dependable in the outfield. Joe is still distracted after his honeymoon in Europe.. Joe.. come back, please.
The expected gallery of ever-older homers follows:

While much of Los Angeles was watching the Lakers wrap up their season with a fight to avoid a record loss differential in an NBA Finals game, the Homers were getting back into the win column with a defeat of the Gravity Frawgs. Although the Homers led throughout, the game was relatively close and low scoring with no mercy rule taking effect in either direction. Offensively, the Homers won pounding out singles and doubles. While there were no home runs or triples, everyone got on base at least once and five Homers reached base in each of their at-bats (Tony, Daniel, Becky, Annette, and Robb). On the defensive side, the Gravity Frawgs were held to a max of 5 runs in any one inning, despite being short-handed in the outfield in the first inning and generously giving up a grand slam in the third. Robb had a particularly busy game, being single handedly responsible for nearly a quarter of the defensive outs. In the fourth, he fielded the ball, tagged first and threw to the well-positioned Andres at home (who sure-handedly received the toss), enabling the tag out as a Frawg tried to score.
Attendees at Georgees' celebrating the Homers' victory included Jessica, Matt, Jeff, Scott M., Daniel, Annette, Renee, Eric, Scott S., Kim, Ron, Sue, Mary, Robb, Becky, Andres, and Sofi.

Some claim there is a direct link between this weeks 2nd in a row Homer's loss and the most important bad news stories of the week that followed - Mars dirt that is too clumpy, the MSL parachute squidding during tests, the Lakers falling to the Celtics in Game 1, and Clinton ending her historic presidential primary campaign (maybe, conditionally, in case some one gets wacked... or something - sigh), and Oil jumping another $10/barrel. Some have even noticed this coincidence lining up with the return of Joe Jacob, famed Homer's stalwart... mere chance or causality? An exasperated Joe claims he is being scape-goated by the weak hearted looking for someone to blame their troubles on... look inside yourselves he says and find the true cause of our troubles! or if that does not work, blame Liz - she was gone both of the last two games!
the run down: Tony and Andres led the Homers offensive charge with one home run each, Joe showed everyone he remembered how to swing a bat by getting on base twice. Ron would have been 3 for 3 but his greed caught up with him on his way to 3rd and he was tagged out. Bachelor mode Andres might have done more but Sophie made very clear how dear her loving father was to her... no one else on the Homer's team could do a good job consoling her while he was playing, so Andres was benched with baby duty the 2nd half of the game.
Defensively, Sheila made a number of great plays at first, Don held the line in left field, Tony made two key outs in the 7th - including what Sue described as an Ice Cream Cone Catch (i have to plead ignorance here - no idea what that means other than, hey, it was great!), and Kim closed out the 7th with a good stop and play to Richard at 2nd. If Daniel would have been awake, a possible pitcher-catcher-1st Base double play in the 2nd might have made the game a little closer... but it only turned into a single out.

Dinner was at Round Table, where good pizza and mediocre beer where enjoyed by all in an amazingly timely manner... compared to other recent dinner haunts. The Steadmans, Scott M, Jeff, Richard, the Limonadi's, Andres and Sophie, Jessica and Hubby, Ron and Sue all made it to dinner. Suggestions for alternate destinations that can hold all of us would be welcome - Dish? Others?
Next game is Monday June 9th. Please let Jeff, Richard, and/or Kim know if you are not coming.
In a Spring filled with disasters, cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the earthquake in Sichuan China, the Democratic primary process, and Andrew Jones' hitting, we can now add a new one: the HOMERS' first loss of the season to the Goat Scouts 17-15.
Offensively, there were no Homers hit, but Rich did get a triple.
Defensively, there were many indescribable plays in the infield which will mercifully go unrecorded. Worthy of note were a Ganino-to-Ganino double play in the 3rd, a 'gift' out from Scott M in right field to Sheila at first base in the 4th, and numerous plays that involved Kim at second base throughout the game.

The main HOMER dinner was at Crown City Brewery where Jeff, Robb, Ron, Rich, Scott M, Richard, Sue, and Mary enjoyed a last supper at the soon-to-be-late Crown City Brewery with a large number of Laker fans. The HOMER super-delegates had a dinner at an undisclosed location, where I am told discussion centered on creating a dream ticket by drafting Richard Chen to run for President and Chad Lee for VP.
Next game is Wednesday, June 4, against the Paper Tigers on the South (grass) field. Please let Jeff, Richard, and/or Kim know if you are not coming.
While I am still learning the ropes of being a regular member of the HOMERS team, one thing I have noticed is that to be a legitimate member of the team, you must complain about how you are regardless of whether you are 32 or 52 and use this an excuse for anything and everything that goes wrong. So in the interest of team comradery, I would like to make the following comment, "Man, if it was five years ago and I was 21 again, I would have caught that ground ball that got past me at short stop." However, despite this, the HOMERS still DOMINATED the Crawdads last night (and, I may note, have won every game that I have been at so far this year...so quit your crying!)

Offensively, everyone had a chance to shine last night, with everyone having at least 1 hit in the very first inning. However, in true HOMER fashion, we had over half of our runs (14 out of 25) scoring off of home runs. Home runs were had by Don who had a 2 run shot in the fourth, Ron with a 2 run home run in the second, Scott with both a grand slam in the first as well as a 2 run home run in the fourth, and Richard with a grand slam in the second. However, our stellar offense was also our downfall (in a way) because 11 out of the 18 outs we had offensively in the game, were due to mercy outs.
Defensively, everyone chipped in to hold the Crawdads to only 9 runs over 7 innings.
Ron is credited with the Win for the game pitching the first four innings and giving up only 5 runs. Then our closer, Andres came in and held the Crawdads to one run. Then our other closer, Rich, came in and held them to three runs. And last, but not least, Jeff, our third and final closer pitched the last inning and did not let them score any more runs. Rumor on the street is the depth of the HOMERS bullpen is respected and fear throughout JPL C league, and rightfully so.

On a warm spring afternoon it was a HOMERS win for the ages, or maybe that should that be a win for the aged. Yes, the HOMERS, who may now have the highest average age of any team in JPL C-league, beat the Procrastinators, which probably are the youngest team in the league.

How did we do it? By living up to our name and actually hitting a few home runs for a change! It was almost like the HOMERS of a bygone era. The difference this time was the motivation to hit the home runs wasn't to show off our power, it was to make it so that we didn't have to run as hard. Running around those bases is getting harder as we all get older. Daniel led the HOMERS attack with a 3 run home run in the 2nd inning, and then followed it up with a 2 run shot in the 4th. Ron added a solo shot of his own to lead off the 5th. With just about everyone else getting a hit or two as well, we had the youngsters by the 10 run "mercy rule" for 3 of the 6 innings played.
The defense did its part as well. The HOMERS turned 2 double plays in the game, including ending the Procrastinators last chance charge in the 6th inning. The HOMERS outfield didn't catch everything hit to them, but they did do a pretty good job of knocking things down to limit the extra base hits.
Of special note was Liz Beck making her season debut for the HOMERS just in time to beat up on her fiance Slim's team. Way to go Liz!

Dinner after the game was at Round Table with Ron, Jeff, Rich, Richard, Kim, Scott S., Jessica, Andres, Sophie, Becky, Scott M., Liz, Sue, Robb, Annette, Daniel, Eric, and Rene all earning HOMERS dinner points.
The next HOMERS game is Monday, May 19 against the Crawdads on Field HS. As always, let Jeff or Richard know if you can't make it.
JPL softball history is ripe with stories of past glories. These stories recount accomplishments of many of the great teams of the past,
some current and some long since disbanded. Names such as the Maulers, Party Machine, Bruisers, Wild Turkeys, Voodoo Toad Fury, Last Gasp,
Goat Scouts, and of course,THE HOMERS are all intertwined in league legend. However, with this rich history comes a certain
aging process, a process which can alter our priorities, responsibilities, and even in some cases
(albeit mostly others) our abilities. It is important to recognize this inevitable transformation,
therefore the following list is included for your reference.
Top ten reasons a Homer knows they’re getting older.
10. Due to the lack of home runs, the team name “Homers” seems to confuse other teams.
9. Richard no longer legs out every hit for a home run.
8. The kids being babysat on opponent’s sidelines years ago are now hitting home runs… against us.
7. The kids being babysat on the Homers sidelines years ago are now ready to begin driving their parents to the games.
6. An infielder’s primary responsibility is no longer just protecting his (or her) beer from getting knocked over.
5. An infielders primary responsibility is actually returning to the bench uninjured (anyone in particular come to mind?).
4. Ron’s historical statistics now take reams of paper to print and contain names you swear you’ve never heard of.
3. You’re primary objective is to survive long enough to get dinner points.
2. Did I mention Richard no longer legs out every hit for a home run?
And the number one reason you know you are getting older…
1. CROWN CITY BREWERY IS ABOUT TO CLOSE!!!!
Despite an aging rooster (I mean roster), the Homers resembled a much younger team, coming from behind to beat the Turkeys 21-16. Richard defied the above list by legging out a grand slam in the sixth inning, giving the Homers a lead they refused to relinquish. Perfect from the plate were Don, Rich, and R!
The entire defense was solid, with almost everyone being able to return to the bench uninjured. Thanks to Sue for stepping up to the plate as our DH, and providing a key hit and RBI in the fifth.

Post game bragging was done at the aforementioned Crown City Brewery (where it should continue to be held until it’s closing, IMHO). Attendees were Jeff, Ron, Sue, Kim, Scott S., Scott M., Richard, Rich, Jessica, and Robb, where stories of CCB past visits were shared. A viewing of Scott’s plaques will be held on a date to be announced.
Next game is Wednesday against the Procrastinators, please let Jeff or Richard know if you are unable to attend, or your aging body just won't let you.
The Homers started out the new season this week with a game against the Bruisers. The first few innings were tense as the Bruisers built a 5-1 lead. The Homers finally came awake in the 3rd inning with 4 runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the 3rd, Richard made an amazing unassisted double play to bring the Homers fans to their feet (well there were people standing up on the sidelines). From there the Homers cruised (or maybe stumbled would be a better word) to their first victory (20-9) of the season.
Offensive highlights include: Jessica, Rich, Robb, Joe, Ron, and Don all got on base at every at-bat. Don and Joe each hit 3 doubles. Richard hit line drives. While no home-runs were hit, there were a lot of base hits that kept the runners coming home.
Defensive highlights: Richard had the previously mentioned unassisted double play. Don, Joe, and Daniel all made great catches in the outfield. Richard made nice easy to catch throws to first base (after his wrist was injured). Tony made a great face saving catch of a line drive while pitching.
Homers Fans in attendance included: Scott S, Eric and Renee
Dinner was at Round table and was attended by: Sue, Ron, Jeff, Rich, Scott M, Richard, Kim, Scott S, Joe, Daniel, Annette, Eric, Renee, Jessica, Robb, and Mary.
The next game is Wed, April 30th on HN against the Wild Turkeys. Please let Jeff or Richard know if you can't make it.
