It was the best of games, it was the worst of games. The Homers fielded their A team against the scourge of the C league - the Toads. The air was so thick (literally) it was like playing in soup. The game was close at one point, 0 to 0 and then the first pitch was thrown. It went bad from there, reaching the pinnacle of shame (double-mercy) in the fourth. But even bad softball is better than no softball and a Homer/Toad game is always fun.
The Homer bats were nullified by the soupy atmosphere with the lone home run by Richard in the 6th. Tony and Ron, in a humanitarian effort, attempted to seed the clouds by hitting the ball pretty much straight up, in the hopes of bringing some rain relief to the fire stricken area but there was always a Toad beneath the ball. On the other hand, Don couldn't hit the ball higher than four feet off the ground so he didn't help much. There were some notable defensive plays: Liz (I think it was Liz) had a shoestring catch in the 2nd, Tony made a great double play on a rocket hit back to the pitcher and then a quick flip to Shiela at first to catch the runner trying to get back to first. One of the more satisfying defensive plays of the season (from the author's point of view anyway) came in the bottom of the seventh. A Toad hitter, hit a ball sharply between left and left center which was snagged by Don from behind by Don who eventually got himself turned around, threw a strike to Ron who wheeled and threw on the money to Robb at home who tagged the greedy Toad runner trying to stretch a triple it into a home run. It was an unfortunate way to end the season but it ended nonetheless. Someday, I would like to make the Toads worry a little that they have to face us. Maybe when the next generation of Homers take the field that will happen

The only difference between baseball and softball is that when you get hit by a softball it leaves a bigger mark. OK, so that may not be the only difference, but it sounds good.
The HOMERS dominated the evening's contest with a 21 to 10 victory over the Titans.
Defensively, the HOMERS played a strong game giving up 0 runs in the first four innings. The Titans were then allowed 10 runs in the remaining three innings as the HOMERS started to get tired feel pity towards the end of the game. Jeff had a great catch in the out field the first inning. In the third inning, Ron, Slim and Sheila turned a 1-5-3 double play. Annette made a great catch in the 6th. In the 7th Eric had an assist at catcher to Sheila at first. Last but not least, in the 5th inning, Kim took one for the team and was run over by the base runner running from first to second. Due to his decision not to slide or avoid, he was out at second. Technically, the batter running to first should have been called out as well. For those of you who are curious, this rule was put in place for safety reasons is from the JPL softball website as follows:
“Sec. 7.w. (Clarification) Bodily collisions are to be avoided at all times. If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and shall also call out the batter-runner because of the action of his/her teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner.”
Now that Softball 101 is over, we can focus on the offensive highlights. The HOMERS only used 3 home runs to score their 21 runs. The home runs started off in the second inning by a debut HOMER by Andy. Jeff then followed with a home run in the 3rd. Last but not least, Ron hit a great HOMER in the 5th which I believe was his 200th home run!
Dinner was held at Round Table much to the Junior HOMERS delight.
The next HOMERS game is on Wednesday, September 2nd against the Voodoo Toad Fury on the HN field. Please let Jeff know if you can't make it.

Softball is better than baseball because the Seventh Inning Stretch means stand up and go home (or, in the case of the Homers, go to dinner).
In a closely competed game, the HOMERS edged the Eclectric Eccentrics 19 to 21.Starting off strong defensively, the HOMERS held the Eccentrics to just three runs in the first three innings this was followed by a couple of defensively weak innings. The HOMERS then decided they had given enough slack and kicked into gear, allowing only one run combined between the sixth and seventh innings.
Offensively Ron homered on his first two at bats. He completed the first home run trotting around the bases after a spectacular fall at first base. Tony also added to the home run count. Although not punctuated by home runs, the HOMER bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth when the game was on the line resulting in the HOMERS regaining the lead.
Spectators included Sue, Scott S., Matt, Haley, Eric, Renee, and Sofi.
Dinner was at Round Table.

This was not a pretty game, so to minimize the agony, this report will be short. The Paper Tigers are a good-hitting team, and the Homers fell behind 20-3 after 3 innings. The Homers didn't muster much offense so never got close to catching up. Offensive highlights include a triple by Sheila, a double into the trees by Joe and a pair of doubles by Tony. Becky also hit a double over the outfielder's head. On the defense, Richard forced a runner at 2nd base with a strong throw from the outfield.

Some exciting stuff in the news this week, not just about the two female journalists released from North Korea, but about the reentry onto the scene of Bill Clinton in securing that release. "He's back!' shouted Jon Stewart on last night's Daily Show. People are glad to see the former president active in our country's service. Apparently he can be very effective, as this incident demonstrates.
So where HAD he been lately? Well this HOMERS Reporter has learned that before that, Bill Clinton had just returned from a mission to find who had stolen the HOMERS' bats, which have been MISSING for several games now. He was pressed into service by Richard Chen, who met him at a casino in Vegas a few years ago. Richard covered for Bill one night, explaining to Hillary that Bill was playing blackjack with Richard for 7 days straight, so Bill owed him. Exactly WHERE the HOMERS bats were found, how they were negotiated for, the terms, etc., is a state secret. If I tell you, I must kill you.
But found and restored they were, and used to great effect in the game on Tuesday against the Deep Space Cadets.

The offensive highlight of the game was Richard's grand slam in the 6th, which we spectators taunted out of him. I guess he showed us. If truth be told, he had Bill Buckner out there in center who let the ball roll straight between his legs. Rolled pretty slow you'd think they'd get to it, but the HOMER base-runners fearlessly kept going and therefore Richard got his 4-bagger. (What does this say on the sheet, "Gift grand slam"?) There were no other HOMERS, just a relentless no. of hits, especially in the 7th when we got 7 runs (lucky Seven!).
Defensively, there were some outstanding plays. Kim made a number of great put-outs, catching Richard's wild throw in the 2nd to get the runner at second. After another out by Kim in the 4th, Ron caught a comebacker and threw to first (Jeff? Scott?) to end the inning with a double-play. And there was a near DP in the 3rd between RIchard, Kim, and Jeff. Kim got a number of 3rd outs, and in defensive mode, those are GOOD 3rd outs to get.
The entire game was played in a haze of smoke (due to a hillside fire over by the 210/2 exchange) that sent Andres and Becky home over concern about Becky's asthma. When the smoke finally cleared, the HOMERS were victorious. As our namesake would have said, "WOHOO!"
The dinner after the game was at Magpies, attended by Scott, Jeff, Sue, Ron, Jessica, Kim, and Scott S.
The next game is WEDNESDAY August 12th, against the Paper Tigers @ HN. AFTER the game, the dinner will be a party at Ron and Sue's house, 1954 Santa Rosa Ave., one half block south of Woodbury Ave., in Pasadena. We are celebrating the completion of a new deck in the back yard. Everyone is invited; pizza and soft drinks will be served. Hard stuff is BYOB :> (Scott and Robb). If you have questions about this party, call Sue at 626 616 1955 (cell).
Please let Jeff or Richard know if you cannot make next Wednesday's game.
After taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning, the Homers locked horns with the Goat Scouts in a defensive struggle. The Homers, perhaps distracted by the first appearance at a Homers game of a very cute (in this reporter's unbiased opinion) 11-week old spectator, allowed a late comeback surge by their opponents. In the end, the Homers held off their rivals to prevail by a score of 15 to 10.
No notable offensive plays come to mind as the Homer's legendary home run machine was effectively shut down by a combination of the Goat Scouts' dominating outfield and the Homers' ever-aging bodies. The Homer's women provided defensive highlights including Annette's nice catch at 2nd base in the 3rd inning, and Sheila's unassisted put out at 1st base in the 5th inning.
Spectators included Sue, Matt, Alyssa, Haley, Eric, Renee, Bonnie Tsang and her Mom making their first appearance of the season, and 11 week old Briana Jacob making her debut appearance.
After the game, dinner at Round Table was enjoyed by Ron, Sue, Annette, Daniel, Eric, Renee, Richard, Jessica, Matt, Sheila, Alyssa, Haley, Scott, and Robb.

What did first base say to second base? I don't know I wasn't there at the time.
It was a very warm day against the Wild Turkeys, mmmmmm turkey. First inning went well for us with 6 runs. During the second inning Ron had a home run, and Liz made a rocket throw from 3rd to 1st in time for a tag out. Not to be overshadowed by Andres' catch in RC during the fifth inning. The line up was

On the eve of the Michael Jackson memorial to be held at Staples Center the fielders take their position on the field. As if almost in memory of Michael they each wear one glove on their hand. Although ours are made of leather and often contain the autograph of a great player before them, these have no rhinestones or jewels. We stand tall at our positions as if we too were on a stage and others are watching. What was to follow could truly be called a Thriller. In the first inning Kim starts us off with a double followed by Ron with an HR. At the end of the first the Titans were up 8 to 2. In the 2nd inning we had a number of hits which included a triple by Robb and HRs by Becky and Don. There was a great husband wife double play in the 4th by Sheila and Tony. It was almost as beautiful as Lisa Marie and Michael. In the 4th Becky made a nice line drive catch, followed by a tremendous circus catch by Kim as she played catcher in the 6th. While the game was going on there was a well noticed hawk circling the surrounding park grounds for a little grub. As he picked its prey (a small rodent) you could here the small children shouting "it's disgusting and cool at the same time". Somewhat like the way the Homers were playing, trying to stay up with the Titans multiple times during the course of the game. Capping a rousing come from behind 10 run 7th inning, Tony came home with the tying run with amazing speed to get there just before the throw. I guess you can say he just "beat it". But as if all of this wasn't amazing and "dangerous" enough a big kudos goes out to Andres for making the 1000th home run in Homer history! Way to go Andres. So as Michael will always be known as the "King of Pop" and for doing the moonwalk, the Homers will return to their day jobs that support the science of walking on the moon and so much more.

As luck has it, I wrote last year's report of the Toads vs. Homers (6/25/08, 14 to 10, Toads' win) so with that perspective, I can say we are a consistent team. We made some mistakes and the batrachians, opportunistic as always, took advantage and pounded us in an ungentlemanly way - they pounded us in their usual slimy, croaky way. There were a couple of defensive plays that provided a tear of joy to the otherwise quiet mood of the Homers: Annette and Jeff caught hits to the right field, while having the sun on their eyes. Offensively Slim hit a home run in the 1st inning and Joe hit one in the 6th. Rumor has it that Rich Benesh was seen in the stands.
The expected gallery of ever-youthfun homers follows:

Required silly joke: What do elves do after school? Gnomework!
The Homers played an exciting game against the Deep Space Cadets on Tuesday, June 8th. The outcome of the game was in doubt until the last inning. Unfortunately, it ended up being a win for the Deep Space Cadets. The Homers played a good game despite being short handed once again (Slim and Liz had to leave early, Richard was late due to B league).
On the offensive side, Daniel hit 2 home runs and Andres had 1. The Homers were quiet at bat until they exploded for 9 runs in the 4th inning.
The defense could also be described as offensive at times. On the bright side, Scott M. filled in at first base and did a great job catching errant throws that came his way. Annette, Joe, Jeff and Daniel bravely manned the outfield and made some nice plays. Robb showed great patience pitching to a very picky cadet. I think he threw her at least 20 pitches.

Why did the baseball player get arrested? He stole a base!
Becky got a 3R home run which was very cool. She also caught a line drive in the first inning. Kim had a good play when she tagged someone out at second base in the second inning. Richard, Tony, and Sheila were missing because they were playing a different game. We did not play well without them. The Wild Turkeys beat us 19 to 14.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 proved to be a day of extremely noteworthy news events.
However, there was one story that transcended all of these and dominated the national headlines.
The Homers move to 5-1 by defeating the Eclectic Eccentrics 21-12.It was a game that will be remembered for awe inspiring defense, jaw dropping offense, flashy new uniforms (that would be the Eccentrics), and a couple of streaks (one stopped, one started).
First, the awe inspiring defense. Annette showed her legendary leaping ability by skying to snag a line drive and robb the hitter of a certain single to right. Joe made a perfect throw from left field to Robb at third for an out. And Richard deposited a portion of his knee in the dirt around shortstop in corralling a hard ground ball headed for center field. Honorable mention in the defensive arena goes to Andres who caught two pop ups at catcher to bail us out of an inning.
Next, the jaw dropping offense. Tony tripled his season Homer homer total in just two at bats, hitting two round trippers. Ron added a homerun as well. Tony and Ron also were perfect at the plate, going a combined 6 for 6. Offensive kudos also goes to Cris of the Eccentrics for filling in the hole at home plate and enabling quick escapes from the batters box.
And what about those streaks?

The next game is Tuesday on the dirt field vs. the Wild Turkeys. I'll bet you know what to do if you're not going to be at the game
At game time the head count was Homers 13, Radars 7. A Homer win by forfeit, 7-0. The Radars third-string manager, Paul, and the Homer brass entered the proverbial smoke-filled back-room and eventually Tony, Daniel, and Liz were traded to the Radars for a bucket of catfish - and we played a game.

The game marked the return of the fairer portion of the Ganino clan, as Sheila, Alyssa, and Haley came out for their first Homer game of the year.
There was no shortage of offense, with 51 runs scored in five and a half innings. Mary joined the pantheon of Homer greats by hitting her first home run for the Homers. (OK, maybe it is more of a large pizza joint than a pantheon.) Other homers were slugged by Slim and two by Ron. Some of the traded Homers went yard for the Radars as well, but who cares. Highlights, or not-so-highlights, were two catches of foul pop-ups at catcher by Jeff (one being Tony' foul ball), Tony tagging Kim out at the plate, and Daniel tagging Becky out at the plate.
The Radars had only one active female by the end of the game, who took many at-bats in their 9 run 5th inning. The Radars are reportedly seeking a federal bail-out and are hoping to have numerous failed corporate CEOs on the roster shortly.
Dinner was at Barn Burner attended by Becky, Sofi, Gabriela, Daniel, Jeff, Richard, Sue, a large rooster, Ron, Kim, Scott S, Matt, Jessica, and Scott M.
The next game is Tuesday May 26 (today for most of you) on the North, dirt field against the Eclectic Eccentrics. Please let Jeff or Richard know if you aren't going to make it.
Following in Eric's tradition, we end with a joke:
Why did the campers bring a baseball player with them?
To pitch the tent! (hahaha)
Scott
Dearest HOMERS,
I am no longer on the "Procrastinators" C League Team, yet I have clearly carried some of their tendencies over with me to the HOMERS. Here is the exciting game report from: HOMERS vs. Goat Scouts, 5/12/09!
The first three four innings saw the lead change hands 6 times, yet the game was well in hand for the heroic HOMERS after 11 runs were put across by 14 batters in the 4th. The HOMERS were able to withstand late inning surges by the Goat Gouts (I mean Scouts), answering 6 runs with 6 runs in the 5th and 4 runs with 4 runs in the 6th.
Offensive highlights: HOMERs were not necessary to milk the goats, yet Slim added one for good measure while going 4-4 and hitting for the cycle. Joe also had a perfect day at the plate going 3-3 with, if I can do this from memory, included a double, a single and, let's call it a triple, just so he can be a homer shy of hitting for the cycle, too ;-). Kim, Annette and Jessica, as well as Ron, Richard, Tony, Daniel, Andres and Robb, were each only one hit shy of perfect nights.
Defensive highlights: Becky made a great stop and a long throw from third in a close play early in the game to keep the Goats in check. Jeff, the “human ball magnet while playing catcher” had his usual put-out on a pop-up while behind the dish (way to make it look easy, Jeff!). Ron at some point had some fancy footwork. That's what's written on the sheet, and since I don't remember it, please feel free to fill in the gap here with your imagination. Richard made a nice catch playing ludicrous depth in center against Dan Moyers, the Scouts resident homer hitter. Slim made some unexpected nice plays at short while playing deep in the hole, but none as nice as Tony's unassisted double-play to end the game, fielding a ball at SS with runners on 1st and 2nd with none out, tagging the runner on 2nd while forcing out the runner coming in from 1st.

Straight from the finger tips (mostly) of Eric Limonadi... the, er, up and coming 6 yr old Homer's report writer! (it is short because the below took 1+ hour for Eric to type - things are a little slower when the report is your first real attempt to use a key board, most computer stuff in kindergarten just uses the mouse, and you are still learning how to spell!)

Q: Why does it get hot after a baseball game?
A: Because all the fans leave!
I like home runs and good defense!! Tony, Don, Ron, and Richard all got home runs!! I liked sitting with Scott learning how the lineup & score sheet works.
We won by a lot. The funniest part was when Kim fell on that runner at second base.

Up until the HOMERS game this week, I was convinced that the 24-hour media outlets had just been over-hyping the swine flu, and its prospects for becoming a major impact on our everyday life. However, given the small number of HOMERS who were healthy enough to make it to the field this week I may have to reconsider my position. Lets just hope this potential pandemic is resolved quickly so that the HOMERS attendance improves by our next game.
Unfortunately, the under-manned HOMERS were mauled by the Paper Tigers this week.1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Paper Tigers 6 0 0 4 0 7 0 17 HOMERS 2 4 0 0 4 0 0 10The HOMERS line-up:

Special thanks go out to HOMER Emeritus Rich Benesh for filling in the thinned out HOMERS ranks.
Ron hit a home run in the first inning, but unfortunately that was our only one for the whole game. The second inning did, however, feature three doubles by Ron, Rich, and Richard to help the HOMERS score 4 runs. Likewise, in the fifth inning doubles by Daniel, Annette, and Jeff led to another HOMERS 4 run rally to tie the game at that point.
Defensively it is hard to play with only 9 fielders, but the HOMERS did manage to hold the Paper Tigers scoreless for 4 innings. Everyone pretty much had to play the whole game. The only HOMERS substitutions were to ensure either Daniel or Annette was available to keep an eye on the HOMERS of the future.
Speaking of HOMERS of the future, Joe Jacob is the one HOMER who had an acceptable excuse for missing the game. He and wife Bonnie were rather busy at the time at Verdugo Hills Hospital right in the middle of labor. I am informed both mom and baby girl are fine, and Joe will send out more details when he gets a chance. Congratulations to Joe and Bonnie!
Dinner after the game was at Round Table where the HOMERS were joined by The Paper Tigers and the Eclectic Eccentrics to make the place a bit of a mob scene. Sue took charge, and made sure everyone got the pizza they needed. Participating were Jeff, Ron, Sue, Jessica, Matt, Rich, Daniel, Annette, Eric, Rene, Kim, Becky, Liz, and Richard.
The next game is on Tuesday, May 5 versus the Crawdads on the grass field, HS. What a way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, grilled Crawdads. As always let Richard or Jeff know if you have come down with the swine flu, or have any other reason that you won't make the game.
Do you all realize that the events of this past off-season have left the Homers with a baseball team in 2024 or so? Figure on Alyssa and Haley playing SS and 2B, as wherever Alyssa goes, Haley will surely follow, probably to Alyssa's annoyance. Light-hitting but speedy Sofi will play center, flanked by Gabriela and Daniel in LF and RF, making an all-Castano outfield, just like the Alou brothers for the Giants in 1963. Eric looks like he'll be a big tall masher like his daddy, so that's 3B, and for symmetry's sake, Renee gets 1B. If Clement has inherited his parents' competitiveness, he'll want the ball as pitcher, while Brianna will be content to catch and throw the ball back and let the pitcher cover home.
Of course, we'll still need one more to complete a softball team. Hopefully, we can look to Annette's cousin's newborn, Adrian, but the kid may need some help. As he tells it (the little bugger's already blogging, http://www.babybarrett.com, maybe with mom's help):
March 24, 2009: While the tears were flowing, they weren't from me...Daddy got a call from my doctor this morning on his way to work. I had tests come back that showed cystic fibrosis (CF). It was very hard for daddy to come home and tell mommy about it... Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system... The median< survival age is now 37. March 26, 2009: Last night, daddy woke up several times talking in his sleep, often times saying out loud "65 roses". '65 roses' is the words often pronounced by children because it's easier to pronounce than "cystic fibrosis".
Annette sent some of us a beautiful message about her participating in a fundraiser for research into the disease. I am often indifferent to such appeals, but baby stories move me now, and this one - this boy was born 6 hours after Clement! If I received such news and had to tell Stephanie, I'd be sick to my stomach and bawling. As it is, I might wake up saying "65 roses", and I'm two steps removed - I hope such events never come any closer. Anyway, if you'd like to kick in and bring some honor to the Homers,

Though the Bruisers fielded a pretty good team, the Homers once again prevailed, 18 to 10. Richard had the only home run of the day, a shot down the left field line that finally put the mercy rule on. More importantly, though not tracked statistically for the Homers, Jeff and Jessica reached safely all 3 times up while Slim, Robb, and Becky each went 2-for-2, and Scott went 1-for-1 before benching himself to concentrate on juggling 17 players through the defense. If any one hit was key, it would be Daniel's low rocket in the second that went off the knee of an athletic Bruiser, knocking her out of the game and putting the Homers up for good.
>Defensively, Slim at SS fought through bad bounces off the clumpy grass on at least two hard grounders, Jeff at C caught a low, twisting foul out, and Andres at P backpedaled nicely to catch a swinging bunt. However, Andres did get touched for 4 runs, as Don dropped a medium-high pop-up, followed by Ron at SS dropping a perfect throw from Richard at C to allow the batter to reach 2B on an overthrow.
Our next game is Wednesday, April 29, vs Paper Tigers on the dirt field. No Scott. Other regulars, please let Jeff/Richard/Jessica know if you won't be there.
