The algorithm to determine the winner:

  • number of regular season games attended
  • if tied, irregular season games attended
  • if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season games
  • if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
  • Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting order, 2) the order of sitting out defensively, and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular game.

    1 September 2010: Homers 14, Voodoo Toad Fury 19

    From: Becky Castano

With the start of the 2011 season, it is time to get out the report for the final HOMER's game of the 2010 season. While the game closed the season with a loss for the Homer's, it was a well-played game and there was no reason for the Homer's to wallow in the off-season mulling over what could/should/would have been.

Offensively, the Homers opened with a strong at-bat, scoring 8 runs in the top of the first. For the most part, however, the Homer bats cooled after the first inning. Particularly notable were a great hit by Annette that was so very close to being a home run, a booming home run by Daniel in the fourth, and another home run for Ron to start the sixth inning.

Defensively, the Homers were fairly solid. There were no defensive break-down innings as the Homers can have from time to time. Andy's play at short stop was more than solid, particularly in the sixth inning in which he was responsible for dispatching three Toads. Kim also had a nice defensive out at second. The spectacular defensive play of the game came in the first inning, when Joe turned a routine catch into a dazzling ball-bobbling display. Homers were, of course, confident that Joe was just toying with the Toads and at no time was the ball in danger of dropping to the ground.

    25 August 2010: Titans 22, Homers 21

    From: Kim Steadman

On a very hot afternoon, the Homers met the Titans in a rematch of epic proportions! Well, maybe not epic but it was a pretty darn good game. After trailing for most of the game, the Homers made a valiant comeback in the bottom of the final inning but they fell one run short of tying up the game. The Titans won 22 to 21.

    Box score:

    Titans 5 2 1 8 3 3 - 22
    Homers 1 2 5 2 3 8 - 21

Andy was an offensive powerhouse with 3 doubles and a home run. Richard also tore up the bases with 4 doubles. Every Homer got a least one hit during the game. On the defensive side, it was Richard who had the play of the day. A Titan that was have a great day at the plate came up to bat with runners on base. As soon as his bat hit the ball the Titans cheered "HOME RUN" and Richard started running. And running. And running. Then when all hope seemed lost, Richard stabbed the ball out of the air with his glove. The Titan was so impressed he ran into the outfield to hug Richard.

    09 August 2010: Homers 25, Crawdads 12

    From: Don Calkins

It was a bad day for Crustaceans everywhere as the Homers mercilessly pounded the Crawdads senseless. The Homers were basically in mercy mode from the 2nd inning until the end of the game. It was a good day for hitting for the Homer, starting with Richard who crushed a ball to left center, which resulted in a grand slam in the 1st and then Ron homered with two on base in the 5th. Annette has a great day at the plate with two hard shots over second base. Don got two ground rule doubles on pop ups that should have been caught but, luckily, the right fielder wanted nothing to do with an airborne softball. In spite of all this firepower, it was Homer defense (boy, does that sound out of place) that put on quite the show. In the first inning, it was Richard with a shovel pass to Ron to get the runner at third. Kelly had a big day at second base putting out two runners - Ron (3b) to Kelly in the second and then Richard (ss) to Kelly in the third. Joe (lf) made an easy catch hard in the fourth, injuring himself in the process. The defensive highlight though came in the fifth inning with a hard grounder to Sheila at first and then Ron (p) covering first to get the hard running crustacean. As always, Shiela had a great day at first, being fundamental to 5 put outs at first.

Dinner attendees were: Sue, Ron, Annette, Daniel, Jeff, Jessica, Matt, Rene, Eric, Sheila, Haley and Alyssa.

Special thanks to Sue whose scoring and excellent game annotation made this report possible.

    04 August 2010: Homers 21, Goat Scouts 12

    From: Ron Baalke

The Homers beat the Goat Scouts 21-12 to improve their season record to 10-4. The game started slow, with the score tied at 5-5 after 4 innings. The Homers though scored 7 and 8 runs respectively in the 5th and 7th inning to open up the game. In the bottom of the last inning, the Homers led 21-7, and Robb pitched the final inning despite having a foot injury and unable to field any balls not hit right at him.

    Box score

    HOMERS 0 3 0 2 7 1 8 - 21
    Goat Scouts 2 0 0 3 0 2 5 - 12

The Goat Scouts started the game a little short-handed, fielding only 8 players in the 1st inning, with only 2 outfielders. Nevertheless, the Homers failed to take advantage and scored no runs, with the inning ending on a double play when Don's line drive to the outfield was caught, and Scott was tagged out trying to advance on a tagup. There was also another double-play the next inning by the Goat Scouts. The Homers got their own double-play when Ron caught a short pop up and threw to Scott to double up the runner on first. Mary also caught a hard-hit line drive at 3rd base in the 1st inning.

Offensively, the Homers were led by Ron (3 home runs, 7 RBIs) and Don (home run, double, 5 RBIs). Ron was 4-for-4, and Jeff, Don and Richard had 3 hits apiece. Joe and Andy also hit a pair of doubles each. Don was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

    27 July 2010: Paper Tigers 22, Homers 23

    From: Daniel Limonadi

What a game! For the first time in recent memory (at least my recent memory), the Homers managed to put one over on the Paper Tigers. The game was pretty tight from beginning to end, with neither team getting too far ahead for too long. A nine run 5th inning by the Homers was enough to earn the victory. It did not hurt that the Tigers only had 2 girls to field and hence were 1 player short in the outfield... but hey, we are old, proud of it, and we'll take whatever advantage we can get. New second basewoman Kelly made her second showing of the season, again helping out the team in a time of need. Also of note was that spotted for the first time ever was Temporary-Kidless-Bachelor-Man, not quite sure what to do with himself and acting and looking visibly uneasy at the lack of kids trying to tackle him and no wife to hold hands with. Post game reports indicate the rare creature seems to have adjusted ok, but is looking forward to more noise and company.

Offensive highlights included Eric and Richard getting on base each at bat (though Richard go lucky on one). Thinking of Don, Tony put two big hits deep into right field going for known-good-doubles instead of the runs. No one on the team got any home runs, but together we got lots of hits and enough RBIs to win this one.

Defensive highlights included the fifth inning 1-2-3 shut down of the Paper Tigers which left Richard slack jawed on the sidelines in amazement that the Homers could actually pull off such a feat, especially after we'd just managed to keep the Tigers scoreless (but not hitless) in the previous inning as well.

Spectators included Alyssa, Sue, and Matt. Dinner was at Los Gringos Loco's... until it wasn't due to too large a wait... so we fell back on our old standby Roundtable. Jeff, Scott, Richard, Andy, Kelly, Ron, Sue, Jessica, Matt, Eric, and Daniel... I think.

    Daniel,

How could you forget, the exciting climax of Ron's blast into the outfield that brought Kelly home from second base, to win the game? Or, even more amazing and incredible and remarkable, Jeff hit a single to right field!!!

    19 July 2010: Homers 18, L.A. Radars 19

    From: Joe Jacob

It was a close game between the Homers and LA Radars, with the biggest lead taken by the Radars being a mere 4 runs in the 3rd inning. That proved to be enough as the Radars defeated the heroic Homers by a single run after the Homers came back to tie up the game in the 4th inning and maintained the tie game into the 5th.

Defensive highlights included Richard in right field throwing hard to Sheila at first base for an impressive put out of a not-so-slow Radars player. Eric at catcher made a nice catch for an out.

Andy hit hard line drive homers in the 2nd and 5th innings. Homeruns were also recorded by Ron and Richard. Richard needed just a single to hit for the cycle (meaning a single, double, triple, and homerun in the same game), but the game ended before he had the opportunity to get his 4th turn at bat. We are sure he would have stopped at 1st base regardless of how far he hit the ball.

    12 July 2010: Double Mercy 15, Homers 16

    From: Sheila Ganino

With the World Cup over and the MLB All-Star game yet to be played, the Homers were the only game in town this warm summer evening. After the nail biter from the week before, many wondered if the Homers could pull out another win. It looked good from the start, with the Homers in control most of the game. Scott made a blind throw from third base to Sheila at first when his view was blocked by the pitcher. Tony had some great catches at shortstop, and also made a nice toss to Mary at second to get the out. Mary also stopped a hard grounder at second and made a nice throw to Sheila at first. As the fielders made their way in after that third out, Robb, who assumed managerial duties during this game, was heard saying, "I knew what I was doing making an all-girl infield", forgetting that Tony was at shortstop and had made two of the outs. It's a hard job being field manager. The Homers were solid offensively as well, with home runs by Ron and Don. Andy, Annette and Ron all had RBI's and Slim hit a double before having to leave early. The Homers mercied their opponent after the 4th inning, and it looked to be an early night for pizza. Then came the 7th inning, and Double Mercy scored eleven runs after going scoreless the entire game with the exception of their first at-bat. The Homers always like to give the fans their money's worth, and this game was no exception. With one out and the tying run on third, Richard stopped a ground ball at shortstop, tagged second for the out, then made the throw to Sheila at first for the double play. Game over.

As for the game itself, the Homers took a good lead in the first and then mentally checked out, allowing the Crawdads to claw back to even going into the last half inning. Becky led that off with a good hit but got forced out on Scott's pop-up that hung a long time but was eventually fielded cleanly on one-hop and thrown to 2B. Don then looped a ball to CF, which should have left the game in Jeff's hands, but the same CF, trying to get Scott going first to third, somewhat anticlimactically threw the ball into the parking lot.

Scott, Don, Kim, Richard, and Joe reached safely every time up. No home runs, though Don squared up a couple of balls nicely.

Defensively, the first was an all-Ganino inning, as Tony at SS went backwards nicely to catch a pop-up then assisted to Sheila at 1B for the other two. The most satisfying defensive play came in the 7th. With the tying run Bob Deen on second base and one out, Richard at SS fielded a hard hit one-hopper, pump faked to first, and tagged Bob out, leaving their hottest hitter Paul Andres with only a runner on first. However, he and the following batter both reached safely to tie the game, leaving Becky/Scott/Don an opportunity for their heroics.

Next week's game is Monday, July 12, on the same field. Regulars, please inform Jeff and/or Richard if you won't be there. No Jessica or Richard/Slim (one of) so far.

    23 June 2010: Voodoo Toad Fury 19, Homers 13

    From: Andy Kubasak

It was a close game heading into the 5th inning, kept that way by a few defensive Sports Center top ten plays. The first was a put out by Richard in the Outfield to Slim at Short. The other was a pickoff by Ron at catcher to Sheila at first when the runner led off a little too much for the Homers taste. The Toads took a large lead in the fifth. The Homers tried to chip away in the 5th, 6th & 7th, capped by the Homers only homer from Andy, but we came up a little short.

    15 June 2010: Homers 24, Wild Turkeys 12

    From: Wes Deadrick

I'm not exactly sure what the motivation was tonight, but the HOMERS were on FIRE showing the spectators how to baste a Wild Turkey. Daniel, Andy, Ron, and Jeff (and almost Becky with a great hit to center) all helped the Homers live up to their name with a slew of HRs. Annette had a great game going 2 for 2 and holding her ground at second for a great catch on a high fly ball in the 4th. Slim owned the 6th inning with a double play at second and the toss to Tony at first followed by a tall reach on what looked to be fly ball destined for the gap. All of this was, of course, to make up for rocketing a toss in the 5th inning to Jeff at first and nearly putting him on injured reserve for the next game.

While the Homers have several games to go, the whoopin' on the Wild Turkeys marked the end of my season and I would like to extend a sincere thanks to all the Homers for letting me join in on the fun!

What takes longer, running from first to second, or from second to third? Second to third, because you have to go through a shortstop.

Great first inning for the Homers opening to a 7-0 lead with the only homerun of the game going to Don. Defense was the key to this victory with great fielding from Slim and Tony also a couple of great line drive catches by Ron while pitching.

Eric L. did a great job keeping score, even with The Casars batting around almost twice in the first inning.

Spectators included: Susana, Matt, Renee, Gabrielle, Daniel C, and Sofi.

The Casars actually had more at bats in the first inning (18) than in the rest of game combined (17). Every Casar got on base at least once. Ricardo and Don both hit jonrones. Maria went 3-3 and had a hit to the right side of the field.

Defensive highlights included 2 doble jugadas by The Casar infield.

No one was injured in the celebration that followed the victory.

Dinner was at Das Boot, attended by Ron, Sue, Yesica, Matt, Jefe, and Scott. Dinner was punctuated by at first happy, then unhappy, yelling by fans of Los Lakers (inverse for Los Sols fans but they weren't very vocal).

Next game is Monday, June 7, against the Goat Scouts on the southern (grass) field. The Goat Scouts beat the Toads last week by 8 runs, so bring your best game.

From: Eric Limonadi What happens when a ball hits a fly?... A fly ball!

Some of our players were at a B league game. In one inning we got them out in a minute! Rob was pitcher and Ron was first base and they got out the first three batters. It was a very cold day. We were playing the Bruisers. We won!! The score was 24 to 18. It was a very good game.

    5 May 2010: Homers 17, LA Radars 21

    From: Robb Warren

It had been a week of grim news which had cast a forlorn pall across the country. Wall Street saw declines of epic proportions within less than an hour, oil was spilling into the Gulf of Mexico with the potential of causing one of the worst environmental catastrophes of our lifetimes, and potential Pakistani terrorists were being linked to events frighteningly close to home in New York. The nation was in dire need of some good news, something uplifting, something that would make Americans remember the "good old days". But wait, the Homers were playing!! Certainly they could be counted on to provide that spark to bring the country out of its doldrums. Certainly they were the sure bet to inspire the country. Right?...Right?.... Nope.

It was a see-saw game, one in which unfortunately the Homers did more of the 'saw' than the 'see'. They saw the Radars score 10 in the third, they saw a late inning rally fall a bit short, and they saw their losing streak reach 2 games. In spite of the seemingly porous defense that the score would indicate, the Radars were hitting the ball solid. Combined with the quick dirt infield, the Homer infielders were challenged throughout. However, Richard and Tony played solid at short, as did Kim at second. Annette was placed in the unenviable position of the 'hot corner', and was able to snag a hot grounder late in the game which undoubtedly saved a run. Although waiting until the last inning, the Homers were able to Homer a couple of times, with both Daniel and an inspired Tony (with some help from the Radars) hitting dingers. Don and Joe were also able to go 3 for 3 at the plate. The gory details follow.

                      1 2 3 4 5 6
    Homers 3 0 3 5 1 5 17

Spectators included Eric, Renee, Sue, Bonnie, and Matt.

Dinner was at Round Table and was attended by Jeff, Kim, Scott S., Richard, Ron, Sue, Scott M., Robb, Daniel, Annette, Eric, and Rene. If the amount of pizza that was ordered is any indication of a recovering economy, then we are clearly out of the woods since there were ample leftovers. However, there was a perfect amount of beer ordered.

The next game is Monday on the dirt field vs. the Bruisers. I'll bet you know what to do if you're not going to be at the game

    27 April 2010: Paper Tigers 25, Homers 16

    From: Jessica Hausman

It was a great first inning with Homers leading 7 to 0 against the Paper Tigers with a home run by Wes. We really don't need to talk about the rest of the game after that. I say it's James Cameron's fault as he distracted some players and they had to leave early to see his talk at Caltech. The ball eating thistles didn't help either.

    19 April 2010: Homers 16, Deep Space Cadets 6

    From: Jeff Osman

Strange things are in the air these days. There is the ash floating in from the erupting volcano in Iceland and disrupting travel worldwide. The there are the shrill cries of the Tea Party activists and the television pundits each trying to shout down anyone who disagrees with them without ever listening to what anyone else might be saying. There are the endless political commercials filling the broadcast airwaves months and months before any election. There are the bad news stories about the economy filling every newscast.

Fortunately, there is also at least one good thing in the air these days, the familiar cry of "Play ball!" Yes, once again it is HOMERS softball season, and all is right in the world.

The HOMERS started the season in the right way with a drubbing of the Deep Space Cadets.

                         1 2 3 4 5 6 7
    HOMERS 1 1 3 0 5 4 2 16
    Deep Space Cadets 1 0 0 1 1 3 0 6

It was an impressive turnout of HOMERS for the first game, which gave everyone a chance to sit an inning or two and catch their breath after not having played in over 6 months. Given the advancing age of some of the HOMERS players this is a good thing. (Have we really been doing this for 20 years???)

Offensively the HOMERS also started off the year living up to their name. Daniel L. was the big bat of the day going 2 for 2 with both hits being home runs. Scott added a homer of his own as well on his way to scoring every time he came to bat.

Defensive highlights featured some of the newest HOMERS. Second year player Eric R. made a nice catch of a pop-up. Meanwhile the newest HOMER, Wes, made a very impressive debut with a couple of good catches in the outfield (not to mention going 3 for 3 at the plate). One in particular brought a few comparisons to some of Joe's more "stylistic" catches from previous years.

Dinner at Roundtable was attended by: Jeff, Richard, Scott, Wes, Ron, Sue, Daniel L., Annette, Eric L., and Rene.

The next game is Tuesday April 27 versus the Paper Tigers on the grass field (HS). As usual please let Richard or Jeff know well in advance if you can't make it.
