The algorithm to determine the winner:

  • number of regular season games attended
  • if tied, irregular season games attended
  • if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season games
  • if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
  • Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting order, 2) the order of sitting out defensively, and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular game.

    31 August 2011: Homers 12, Voodoo Toad Fury 18

    From: Jeff Osman

As summer starts it's slow transition into fall, you can always count on a few things: the temperatures in Pasadena typically reach some of their highest levels for the year, the kid's and teacher's thoughts turn to a new school year, Robb's and Kim's thoughts turn to a new NFL season, real football fans thoughts turn to a new college football season, and the HOMERS and Voodoo Toad Fury clash in the finale of JPL C-league softball.

Yes, this is it for another season, and unfortunately for the HOMERS it ends on a slightly down note.

    HOMERS 2 0 5 0 0 1 4 12
    Voodoo Toad Fury 2 11 0 1 0 4 x 18

Despite the final score it was a good and fun game for all involved. These two teams have played each other so many times over so many years it is hard to tell whether either team trash-talks the opposing team, or its own team more.

Offensively, the HOMERS were held homer-less, though just about everyone got at least one hit. We managed to put together a couple of rallies in the 3rd and 7th innings, unfortunately they just were not quite enough. Defensively, the HOMERS played a very tight game, if we just ignore the second inning. Richard had a good defensive game, including being responsible for every out of the 5th inning. He made some good throws to 1B and made a couple of good attempts at throwing out runners at home. This game also marked Ron's return off the DL to end the season on the field.

The batting order and defensive line-up for the game was:

    Jeff C 1B 1B - OF C
    Scott OF OF OF C - 1B
    Kim 2B 2B - - 2B -
Don OF OF - OF OF OF
    Ron P P - P P -
    Annette 3B 3B - 2B - 2B
    Richard SS SS P - SS -
    Jon 1B - SS SS - SS
    Mary OF - 2B OF - OF
Andy OF - OF OF - OF

Joe - OF OF OF OF OF
    Kelly - C C - OF -
    Becky - - 3B 3B 3B 3B
    Robb - - - 1B 1B P

Spectators: Sue, Eric, Rene, Scott S., Austin, Sofi, Danny, Bella, Dennis Wittman

Dinner was held at Round Table with Jeff, Scott M., Ron, Sue, Kim, Richard, Annette, Eric, Rene, Scott S., Mary, Jon, Shannon, Becky, Sofi, Danny, Bella, and Robb participating.

During dinner there was some discussion of a possible end of season party being planned so stayed tuned for details.

HOMERS management (myself and Richard) wish to thank all of the HOMERS for another fun season and look forward to playing with you all again next year!

    16 August 2011: Titans 17, Homers 8

    From: Don Calkins

The week beginning Aug. 15 was a week of pain. Bad enough that the stock market plunge added years to our projected retirement dates but things really got ugly when the Titans drubbed (Drub - verb 1. Hit or beat (someone) repeatedly. 2. Defeat thoroughly in a match or contest) the Homers soundly. Fortunately, there are a finite amount of innings/game and the beating came to an end. But, even "losing softball" is better than "no softball", so it was still a fun game.

First, special thanks to Jose, Tony and Tyler for coming to our aid when Jeff raised the call. I think Annette deserved the game ball with a heads up play at catcher to pick off the runner at first, a good catch of a fly ball to right field and a stop of a hard grounder at second. The lone burst of power came from Andy with a monster home run in the first inning. Jeff pounded the ball then entire game - almost hitting it out of the infield once or twice. Don had a bead on monster fly ball to center and overran it a little which forced a turnaround (never a good thing on a fly ball) and ultimately failed to make the catch. If I remember correctly Austin and Mary were hitting the ball well. And Joe made a couple of good in the outfield on fly balls.

I don't know who went to dinner - who could eat after going through that?!?

Final Score Titans 17, Homers 8

    10 August 2011: Wild Turkeys 18, Homers 9

    From: Jessica Hausman

As I am not very creative with these reports I will hopefully not cause any narcolepsy to my teammates as they read this report. Narcoleptic tendencies at games, however, are not my fault, but may have account for the score at the last game with the Wild Turkeys winning with 18, while we had 9. A lack of players probably didn't help either with Ron still out due to his previous injury and Don suffering from a mysterious foot injury that occurred when he was sleeping, or so he says. However Ron was still there to field manage and Don showed up in his work duds and possibly more importantly his bats. We promise Don that we see you for more than just bats. Austin took up the challenge and helped fill in for the lack of male players with a really nice catch in outfield and some solid hits. Austin, hopefully your future career choices will land you at JPL because I don't think you'll have any other choice now that we know you can play. Richard did something in the 2nd inning, but I don't know what DP means so I don't know if it's of any significance or not.

Details of the game looked like

    1 August 2011: Homers 15, Paper Tigers 16

    From: Slim Mrozinski

The HOMERS (12-3) fell in a nail-biter to the Paper Tigers on Monday, in a game that will surely be remembered by, well, probably just me, thanks to the massive matching bruises on my shoulder and my head.

The HOMERS never completed an inning with the lead, but that didn't stop them from battling. Nothing had been decided by the end of the 3rd inning, but the HOMERS left a blank in the top of the 4th allowing the Paper Tigers to pull away 9 to 6. A 4-run rally in the 5th was matched by PT's own 4-run rally, so the HOMERS stepped things up a notch in the top of the 6 to take a precarious 15 to 13 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the last frame, the Paper Tigers were chasing 1 run when a massive swing led to a less than massive hit that just barely reached the wood chips in RF for a ground rule double to win the game.

    HOMERs Highlights include:

Of course the play that you all will remember, though, is the ball that got by Slim down the line, which went for a 3 run homer =). Or perhaps you'll remember his 2 errors at SS. Or the time he wore the ball in the ear. Yah, I bet you'll remember that one. `Cause I keep bringing it up. Ron did an excellent job field managing, except when he put Slim in the outfield and Slim gave up that home run.

The HOMERS cheering section was comprised of at least Sue, Scott S., Sofi, Bella and Danny. Dinner was had at Round Table, and was to attended by Sue, Ron, Scott M, Kim, Scott S., Sofi, Bella, Danny, Becky, Rob, Mary and briefly by yours truly.

The next HOMERS game is on Wednesday, August 10th, 2011, vs. the Wild Turkeys on Hahamongna North (dirt field). Let Richard or Jeff know if you can't make it.

Before signing off, let me say excellent season everybody! I unfortunately will not be able to make any more games this season, but I look forward to seeing you all on lab, around town and certainly next Spring. Best of luck the rest of the season!

    26 July 2011: Homers 19, Double Mercy 11

    From: Ron Baalke

Under the veil of an impending default of the government if the debt ceiling isn't raised, the Homers went on to beat Double Mercry, and to improve their season record to 12-2. The Homers took a small early lead, but Double Mercy caught up, and the score was tied at 11-11 after 5 innings. In the final two innings, the Homers scored 8 runs while holding the Double Mercy scoreless, for the final score of 19-11.

    Box score

    HOMERS 3 0 5 2 1 3 5 - 19
    Double Mercy 0 3 1 5 2 0 0 - 11

Offensively, the Homers doubled the Double Mercy to death, by lashing out 15 doubles. Slim hit the lone home run, a 2-run shot in the 3rd inning. Richard, Don and Mary all went 4-for-4, and Don had 3 doubles. Andy went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI's, and Jon was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's. Becky also went 3-for-4.

Defensive highlights included 2 double plays. The first was by Slim by catching a pop-up and doubling the runner at first. Richard got a similar double play in the 7th inning.

Ron missed playing a game in 5 years because of last game's calf injury, but juggled the line-up. The Homers started with 13 players at game time, but Slim, Andy and Karen left early, so were were down to the bare minimum of 10 players the last 2 innings of the game.

    19 July 2011: Homers 22, Goat Scouts 9

    From: Andy Kubasak

It was a bright sunny afternoon/evening as the Homers took the field against the Goats. Right off the bat/bats the Homers took a lead and never looked back. Homers by Ron & Andy helped the offense out a bit. But the explosion for 22 runs was really sparked by the fact that every batter had a hit, and four batters hit safely in every plate appearance. At one point the Homers had 8 straight hits.

The Homers had only four innings to produce runs, as the last three innings were played under double mercy. The Homers double mercifully recorded an out in the first plate appearance of each inning to hurry the team to Round Table.

Defensively the Homers were anchored by Annette, who recorded two double plays, and in another inning recorded all three outs! Scott recorded an out at first by sitting on the bag. Richard pitched well enough to secure the 15 run lead (filling in for Ron after a scary tumble on the base paths which robbed him of a triple). (Hopefully this report finds Ron’s leg feeling much better). Final Score:

    Homers 6 0 7 9 0 0 0 - 22

    11 July 2011: L.A. Radars 9, Homers 16

    From: Joe Jacob

This game was almost over before it started as the LA Radars struggled to form a full team as game time approached. Perhaps the ominous threat of Carmageddon kept the Homers' worthy opponents at bay? Just as Carmageddon proved to be a non-event, this threat of no softball game was also empty. Fortunately Becky and Jessica agreed to trade sides for the day and the weekly summer softball game was on. Jessica rejoined the Homers in the fourth inning as more Radars players straggled in.

Ron opened the game with a big homerun that spearheaded a dominant Homers first inning that put them ahead by a score of 8-0. The two teams were quite evenly matched for the rest of the game as the final score was 16-9.

Defensive highlights include Slim making an excellent catch in left center field in the third inning by running in to catch a very hard hit line drive. In the fourth inning, Mary backhanded a hard grounder at 2B and mercilessly forced out a small child running from 1B (bully!). Richard then fielded a hard grounder off of his chest and threw to Jon at 1B to end that inning. Last but not least, Robb did an excellent job as field manager. This reporter also recalls Becky making an excellent catch at 3B, but it is not clear that should make the Homers highlight reel since she did it as a Radar this time.

    Line Score:

    5 July 2011: Homers 14, Titans 18

    From: Robb Warren

2011 had been a year of successes for the Homers. These included both on field success with a victory over the TOADS and only one loss to date, but off the field as well with Joe and Bonnie's new entry into the "Homers of the Future" club. So chalk it up to distractions, whether it be the upcoming British Royalty invasion, McCourt-gate or Carmageddon, but the Homers experienced their own Homergeddon with a loss to a small but solid Titans team.

Homer defense was actually pretty solid throughout, although did not exhibit any of its usual individually spectacular plays. With that said, Richard did make two impressive (albeit slightly late) throws home in an attempt to nail advancing runners. The offense did produce its usual array of homeruns, with round trippers being hit by Andy, Tony, and Jon. Ron, perhaps exhausted after taking out his aggressions during pregame batting practice was 'homerless', however did manage a 3rd inning triple. Scott and Joe were the only Homers to be perfect at the plate, both going 3 for 3.

    28 June 2011: Double Mercy 9, Homers 18

    From: Mary Wittman

Like the old days when Babe Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees from the Boston Red Sox. Or like when Hershel Walker was traded to Minnesota Vikings from the Dallas Cowboys for 5 players and multiple draft picks, this game also started with a blockbuster trade. Mary and Kim were both redirected from the Homers dugout to the Double Mercy dugout.

In the first inning the Homers started with a vengeance. They were successful in getting through the batting order and a little extra. Ron went 4 for 5 with a single, 2 doubles and 1 home run. Other homerun hitters were Becky with 1 and Andy with 1. Congratulations to all of you. Jeff was successful with a couple of hits to the right side although Kim made a great stab at one of them which left her with a bruised hand. Don attempted to relive his glory days and shoot one over his teammates (now opponents) head, only to hear it hit the sound of leather. Sorry Don but you had so many successes over my head in the past. Other highlights included Richard going 3 for 4 and Andy going 4 for 4, as well as making a great leaping catch at shortstop. A big thanks to Kelly and Karen for coming out in the heat and Don for letting his teammates (now opponents) keep using his bats when they were getting hits.

Kim and Mary each had 2 hits for Double Mercy, not to mention a nice welcome for coming over to the other side and a few laughs. We both enjoyed our time and the new teammates on the other bench.

Because the score sheet only had the first 2 innings filled in I'm going to assume that you all played the same positions the rest of the game.

    22 June 2011: Voodoo Toad Fury 20, Homers 21

    From: Richard Chen

Trivia for the week: When did the Homers last beat the Toads? Hint, from Plutarch's "Parallel Lives":

The Medes [Persians] made a sally against their mound and put its defenders to flight. At this [Marc] Antony was enraged, and visited those who had played the coward with what is called 'decimation'. That is, he divided the whole number of them into tens, and put to death that one from each ten upon whom the lot fell.

No, it hadn't been ten years since we last beat the Toads, but it had been 10 games. And while our all-time winning percentage against them is probably better than 10%, it's probably not far off. I'd be suprised if it were 30%.

    15 June 2011: Homers 15, L.A. Radars 14

    From: Scott Morgan

A poor, shy wiener became the center of the World's attention recently. First the unsuspecting wiener was photographed in an unassuming grey disguise while attempting to hide from the paparazzi. Twitter carried the wiener's photo the length of the country to Washington State. The normally reclusive wiener was thrust into the spotlight. But a controversy raged - no one could identify the orphan wiener - "who's wiener was it?". It wasn't Oscar's wiener, nor was it John the Farmer's wiener, nor the wiener of Der Schnitzel. Then the unsuspecting wiener got even more exposed on the internet, TV, and radio - this time without the disguise...

The wiener was deeply affected, unable to stand up for himself in the press. But the mystery was soon solved - it was Weiner's wiener. Weiner stood up before the press and screamed "hack", "prank", and joked about the poor wiener. Weiner eventually apologized for the flogging his wiener had endured. Weiner quit his job to spend more time with his forlorn and emotionally drained wiener. In the end, it was agreed that years of attention would be required to bring both Wieners back to their former stature.

Finally, a wiener in a tight spot: http://www.joesdaily.com/2009/07/19/oscar-mayer-mobile-on-the-loose/

Amidst all of the wiener whirlwind, the HOMERs played a very close game against the LA Radars.

    The line score and lineup:

    HOMERS 1 5 0 1 4 3 1 15

    Andy OF
    Jessica C/RF
    Becky OF/3B
    Daniel C/OF

Offensive highlights: Everyone got at least one hit. Ron hit a long 3-run HOMER.

Defensive highlights included both an errant throw to the plate and an errant throw from the plate. A great putout at the plate that went Andy-Richard-Jeff and a double play that went Annette-Richard-Scott. Also, Richard caught a lot of line drives at short early in the game.

Dinner was at Roundtable attended by: Ron, Shannon, Jessica, Daniel, Rene, Annette, Eric, Jeff, Richard, Scott, Becky, Danny, Sofi, Bella.

Next game is Wednesday against the TOADS on the South (grass) field in our traditional Summer Solstice Shootout. Please send an email or embarrassing personal image to Jeff or Richard if you are not going to be able make it.

    8 June 2011: Homers 5, Wild Turkeys 18

    From: Shannon Tronick

The first loss of the season brings about sadness - but we must not let losing make us become lost!

"In softball ... the softball gods giveth and the softball gods taketh away, but that evens out over the season." - Yvette Girouard, Coach, LSU

The Homers had previously outscored their opponents by an average of 8.2 ppg by scoring an average of 20.7 ppg, but on June 8th, the Homers dropped to the Wild Turkeys 18-5. The Homers just couldn't seem to catch a break, serving continuous pop flies to the Wild Turkeys. The game started out close in the 1st inning, but the Wild Turkeys broke away with 7 runs in the 2nd. Three straight innings of 0 runs didn't help the Homers on a gray and cool Wednesday afternoon.

    23 May 2011: Bruisers 24, Homers 26

    From: Kim Steadman

The end of the world was suppose to be on May 21st but May 22nd dawned with little fanfare. Then the May 23rd Homers vs Bruisers game arrived and the first few innings had many Homer faithful thinking that the end had arrived a few days late. In the 4th inning the Bruisers had to take a mercy out as their lead over the Homers reached 10 runs. Homer errors combined with some nice hits by the Bruisers contributed to the Earth shattering moment of Mercy.

The Homers offense woke up in the bottom of the 4th inning with 6 runs and added another 11 runs in the 5th to take the lead. The hits were spread around with every homer reaching base safely at least once during the game. Scott, Don, Ron, Richard, Andy, and Joe all hit doubles but there were no home runs for the Homers.

The top of the 6th inning began with the Homers clinging to a three run lead. The Bruisers weren't ready to give up yet and started to claw their way into the lead. With one run in and several bruisers on base, the batter hit Ron with the ball. Ron hurried to find the ball and then racing towards first he put a little oomph on his underhanded throw that had Scott reaching for the sky to snag the last out and preserve victory for the Homers.

    18 May 2011: Homers 20, Crawdads 8

    From: Sue Kientz

This week's game reminded me of something that happened in the news recently, something incredible, wonderful, long-time-coming ---- but gee, I just can't recall... something so well executed, surgical, stealthy, and immensely satisfying. I have this image of the HOMER Team 6 helicoptering onto the field, running the base paths and hitting their targets so well, and then clearing out to our dinner carrying, well, I was carrying the rather heavy score book... I just can't quite recall what it all reminded me of!

Anyway, like I said, the HOMERS dispensed handily with the Crawdads by a score of 20-8 in just 5 innings, because it was darn cold and we needed to get outta there before some poor spectators froze.

The big innings for the HOMERS were the first and second, where they brought in 9 and 7 runs respectively. HOMER player of game goes to Tony with 2 HRs and a triple. Andy seemed on his way to hitting for the cycle when he stopped at 3rd for his triple, just as the ball came in and smacked him directly on the ankle; lesson: he shoulda pulled a Baalke and gone for the HR. Richard also hit a HOMER for the cause.

Defensively, Mary made a nice play as catcher, getting the runner out at 1st in the third inning. Ron alll-most eked out a double play in the second inning while playing short, getting the runner out at second and just missing Speedy Gonzalez at first. I'm sure there were many other memorable moments, but they need to be written down on the score sheet for me to possibly remember them. Hint hint! :)

    3 May 2011: Goat Scouts 9, Homers 11

    From: Andres Castano

It was the second game of the week. Despite that the homers were totally tired, we managed to win the game. Big thanks to Kelly who subbed for us. Despite the limited turned out, Andres, in his first 2011 appearance, was happy to see the homers in good form. Although taking one inning to get their defensive footing, the homers only allowed four runs to be scored in the final six innings. Offensively, Ron scored the sole home run for the homers in the first. Other offensive highlighs include two triples by Andy in the 2nd and Richard in the 3rd, and Andres getting on base on every at bat. Defensively, Andres leaped like a panther and caught an extremelly difficult pop-up in mid-air; he felt bad about the batter that was doing her best, though. The chaising of children prevents this reporter from remembering any other offensive or defensive plays. Thanks much for the team effort to keep an eye on all the munchkins.

    2 May 2011: Homers 20, Wild Turkeys 5

    From: Richard Chen

Can I exercise the Daddy waiver and write a bare bones Homers Report? If not, how about the first-of-back-to-back-games waiver? Like my relentless, remorseless, time-devouring cutie pie back home, it is what it is. And so many things have happened in the 5 days since our last game: Michael Scott's leaving Scranton, the Royal Wedding, and oh yes we found and nailed the biggest gaping aHole in our lifetimes. OK, I'll at least rank them by awesomeness:

    1. justice served - it's too soon to be snarky about this
    2. Homers keep rolling - JPL C League -> JPL Softball -> JPL -> NASA -> universe trembles
    3. the Office - the Homers are peaking in our 21st season, while nothing's had me ROTFL since Dwight's fire drill 2 years ago
    4. British stuff - sheesh, three Homers have gotten married during their tenures on the team, and you don't see us inviting Elton John and such
The Homers handily beat a good team, the Wild Turkeys, who have already beaten our traditional nemesis the Toads this year. Ron crushed the ball for two early home runs that put us ahead for good, and Becky, who's been swinging beautifully, nailed one over all the outfielders as well for a big 3-run homer in the 5th. Dave hit one to dead center that should have been a triple, but with a 16-run lead and credit only for homers, he was sent home and was thrown out by 15 feet. He did reach safely every other time, though.

Defensively, Jeff nicely and terrifyingly correctly adjusted to catch Matt Gatti's slicing ball in the 4th. Richard had a good running catch in the 5th. Becky caught a sharp line drive in the 6th. Andy at SS made every play he was supposed to make including one tricky throw over the base runner returning to his base for a line-drive double play.

      Homers 2 4 0 4 7 3 0 20
      Wild Turkeys 0 4 0 0 0 1 0 5

Thanks to David Werntz and Tracy Carrillo for subbing. They needed the swings in preparation for their first B League game the next day. Tracy brought fans Scott and Brittany, joining stalwarts Sofi/Daniel/Gabriella and Eric/Renee until dad Daniel showed to take them away. And old stalwarts Sue and Matt gave their support as well.

Our next game is TODAY on field HS against the Goat Scouts, who can be very good as well. If you're going to miss the game and haven't notified Jeff or me yet, you are very bad and will be meeting bin Laden in heck - nope, too soon.

    27 April 2011: Paper Tigers 14, Homers 22

    From: Daniel Limonadi

Speaking of the Daddy waiver... here is the second in a series of wimped out Homers Reports... asynchronous and late no less. Richard beat me to the punch and wrote up Monday's game… don't be confused my fleet footed and strong batting friends, this report is for the game on 4/27/2011 (way back in last week) when we played the Paper Tigers.

And what a game it was. Little did we know that while the humble Homers were playing, in some small a corner of DC, folks were preparing a briefing to the President on what we knew about the whereabouts of He Who Shall Not be Named (oh wait, that was Voldemort, the bald guy, this is crazy bearded guy Bin Laden, my bad) and what our options were for taking him out. The very next day on Thursday a most excellent decision was made, and carried out several days later by some very bad a$$ Seals. Hooah to those guys. In the grand scheme of things however, while the latter might be noteworthy, by far the more important action was taking place at Hahamonga park deep inside the Devils Gate reservoir... where the Homers handily beat often the sometimes mighty, but this time truly, Paper Tigers. The victory took the Homers to a 2-0 opening to the season.

I was flagrantly not paying attention to the game, exhibiting my keen ability to be square, in the midst of others having fun. Why are we changing HW on MSL 3 months before last access some might ask... Anyway, we must have been doing something mostly right on defense since ! we held the Paper Tigers often formidable offense to a mere 14 points (hey, this is C-league). I do have a vague recollection of being impressed by a running stop by Richard at short stop with a well aimed fast one to first for the out. On the offensive side we had 3 homeruns, 2 by Ron (who is having a great batting season so far by the way) and 1 by Richard (he may be a dad, but he ain't dead yet). Uncharacteristically, scads of Homers got good singles and doubles, combined with the homers, bringing in a total of 22 points, mercy'ing the paper tigers in the 4th and 5th. Hooah, Homers.

    Paper Tigers 3 1 4 1 3 2 14

    18 April 2011: Homers 25, Eclectic Eccentrics 15

    From: Jeff Osman

Spring is a time of renewal.

This year that seems especially true. This year the "Arab Spring" has brought renewed cries for freedom and democracy across a large swath of the Earth. The divisive political environment in Washington has brought renewed cries for fiscal restraint. In many states there have been renewed cries to reign in unions and pension costs. The disaster in Japan has brought renewed cries for the end of nuclear power.

It appears to be a serious season for renewed cries.

Fortunately, one renewed cry has a much lighter tone, the cry of "Play Ball!". Yes, once again it is time for HOMERS Softball, and the world seems a happier place. The result of the first game of the season made the HOMERS even happier.

                          1 2 3 4 5 6
    HOMERS 9 10 2 0 1 3 25
    Eclectic Eccentrics 3 2 5 2 3 0 15

The HOMERS welcomed two new players with this game, Shannon and Jon!

The HOMERS started the year fast with two big offensive innings. They looked like the HOMERS of old, living up to the team name by hitting 4 home runs in the first two innings, before adding another homer in the 6th. Slim was 3-for-3, with all of his hits going for home-runs. Don and Ron each added one as well. Everyone else (with the exception of some lousy lead-off batter who shall remain nameless) joined in the offense as well with at least one hit.

Defensive highlights of the game included 2 unassisted double plays by HOMERS rookie Jon. Joe joined in with a classic Joe type catch in left field. No one, including Joe, was sure if he was going to make the play until he did.

    HOMERS line-up for the game:
