The algorithm to determine the winner:
number of regular season games attended
if tied, irregular season games attended
if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season
games
if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting
order,
2) the order of sitting out defensively,
and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't
have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular
game.

Yes Homers, it is that time again.
Memory. It's something we all take for granted, at least until we can no
longer remember why we took it for granted in the first place. Contrary
to popular opinion, memory is not just a recollection similar to viewing
a photograph. Rather, one's memory is often "massaged" by time and even
personal opinion. In fact, many lawyers and detectives will state that
eye witness accounts of events are very often the least reliable form of
evidence. Throughout history, many individuals have given us insight
into what memory truly is, or is not.
- "A clear conscience is the sure sign of a bad memory." ~ Mark Twain
- "Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think
I've forgotten this before." ~ Steven Wright
- "There are lots of people who mistake their imagination for their
memory." ~ Josh Billings
- "Memory is what tells a man that his wife's birthday was yesterday."
~ Mario Rocco
In order to jog our collective memories a bit and bring us up to speed,
here are some things that have happened since the last time the Homers
took the field.
- Joaquin Guzman (aka El Chapo) was captured after an ill-advised
interview with a Hollywood actor.
- Steve Harvey announces Miss Columbia as winner of Miss Universe instead
of Miss Philippines. Reports that Mr. Harvey has returned to remedial
reading classes have not been confirmed.
- Future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning retires, with a brand
new Super Bowl ring.
- The Force Awakens, newest of the Star Wars franchise, released
Dec. 14... with Harrison Ford.
- Kansas City wins World Series in 5 games over the surprising New York
Mets.
- The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (aka LIGO)
provided confirmation of predictions in Einstein's Theory of Relativity
with the detection of gravitational waves. This also demonstrated that
there are really individuals that will devote decades to detect something
as small as one ten-thousandth the diameter of a proton. Yet, some of us
are challenged by detecting something the size of a softball hurtling
directly at them.
- In spite of endless rhetoric and (seemingly) dozens of political debates,
we as a country are no closer to selecting a viable president elect.
Although entertaining at times, not really the political process our
fore fathers envisioned.
And unfortunately, we lost a number of notable individuals. Leonard Nimoy,
Yogi Berra, Frank Gifford, Martin Milner (Adam 12 fame), Judy Carne (Laugh
In), Uggie (Canine star of The Artist), David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Natalie
Cole, and former First Lady Nancy Reagan, to name just a few.
Yet in spite of all the things we may remember and/or forget, one thing
we will never forget... WE BEAT THE TOADS.
The game proved to be a see saw affair, with the lead shifting throughout
the contest. Fortunately the Homers defense stepped up big, allowing only
21 runs over the last two innings. The game was not decided until the
bottom of the last inning, with Richard driving in the fifth and deciding
run of the inning. Every Homer reached base in at least half of their at
bats, with round trippers being hit by Tony Gr and Richard. The defense
was highlighted by a backhand stop by Mary at second, a great catch by
Craig in left, and a tag... almost... by Andy at home. Here are the
details (thanks to documentation on the game, since one particular
individual's memory of the game is somewhat clouded).

Our next/first game of the season is Wednesday, April 20 on HN (dirt field)
vs. the Eclectic Eccentrics. Let this be the first reminder of the season
that if you are unable to attend, please advise the still working Richard
or the recently retired Jeff. Other reminders that will not be repeated
(hopefully) in future reports. (1) Please sign a waiver prior to your
first game. (2) If you have not already done so, please pay Jeff the
league fee of $35. I am reasonably confident that none of that sum is
going to supplement Jeff's retirement or golf activities.
See you on the field!

At our annual stakeholders meeting, quite a few Homers brought up concerns
about our sometimes insufficient number of female players, our age, and our
diminishing athleticism. A Homer recruitment working group
then searched for names along statistical parameters (e.g. popular
ones for female babies in the early 1990s,
recent Sports Illustrated Sportsmen of the Year, ...) and turned over
every digital stone, not just the standard Internet.
That, my friends, is the only reason searching for "ashley madison jpl"
on the dark web returns a list of various Homer managers and players.
The only reason.

Though we dominated the game until the last half inning, this blown lead
was not so painful, either because we can chalk it up to the vagaries of
the mercy rule, which cost us two outs at the end of the game,
or because we pulled off something similar a few weeks ago. Also, we recorded
no outs in the bottom of the 6th, so they could reasonably have expected to
scored another four more.
No Homer homers. Annette had the most athletic defensive play of the day from
LC, sprinting to her left but reaching back to field a bad hop. Was that
behind her head? We need video. Richard from
LF picked up a deep ball that thudded upon landing
and threw to Tony at SS, who relayed to Rich (Daniel? Jeff?) at C to get the
batter trying for a homer. I think it was Rich because in the spectacular
collision, our catcher stayed standing while the batter/runner toppled over.
Next week's game is the season finale against the Toads on Wednesday,
September 2, on the dirt field. Please let Jeff or Richard know if you
won't make it. Trivia: this is the latest possible date for a C League
game given the longstanding parameters for scheduling.

Establishing a HOMER first, the HOMERs fielded an all-woman team for
the game against the Titans. In a demonstration of support for Caitlyn
(nee Bruce) Jenner, all of the male HOMERs self-identified as female
for the game. Manager Rachel Chen stated "I am not worried about the
game, I'm worried about the line at the bathroom". Field manager
Jennifer Osman noted that setting the defense is much easier when the
entire team is female.
The HOMERs defeated the Titans with a steady stream of runs capped by a
9 run 6th in which the HOMERS missed batting around by 1 batter.

HOMERS were hit by Andie, Ricki, and Scottlyn. Kim made 2 great catches
on defense. Jennifer gets credit for noting the aggressive Titan who
tried to advance to third without tagging up.
Thanks to Sue and Ron dinner was at the Athaneum Al Fresco. In attendance
were Sue, Rhonda, Jessica, Matt, Jennifer, Clement, Scottlyn, Robberta,
Becky, Danny, Sofi, and Bella.
The next game is a grudge match against the LA Radars who defeated the
HOMERs by 1 run ealrier in the season. The game is on Tuesday on the
dirt field (HN). Please let Jennifer and Rachel know if you cannot make
the game.

Homer was sleeping at the bar and forgot to submit his weekly report to
his boss. Bart woke him up with a prank phone call looking for Matt Damon,
who was secretly visiting one of the NASA centers. Homer finally wrote
the report with a little help from Moe.
What an amazing game of hitting. I was going to list all of the top hitters,
then realized that the Homers only made 7 outs the entire game. All of the
other outs were from the mercy rule. Also, in the finally inning not a
single out was made and we batted 15 players. Robb was going to be the
16th hitter, but we decided to let Cinco Equis have a turn.
While we weren't crushing the ball, Dr. Robb was demonstrating several
back exercises. If you need to make an adjustment please make an
appointment in advance.
Two Home Runs from Tony Gr and one from Tony Ga.
I didn't attend dinner, but I believe everyone went to Moes. It was Bart,
Marge, Lisa, Mr. Burns, Nelson, Ned, Krusty and Milhouse. If you need
archival data, please contact Jeff or Richard.
I have a very strong psychic feeling that we will beat the Titans next
week and that we'll go to a fancy restaurant. Let Homer know if you won't
be playing or leaving early for Boy Scouts.

For the sake of saving everyone time. What is time. Well according to
something I found on Wikipedia:
"Time is a measure in which events can be ordered from the past through
the present into the future, and also the measure of durations of events
and the intervals between them. Time is often referred to as the fourth
dimension, along with the three spatial dimensions."
But for some folks they may think of it in some of the following ways:
As time management, timeline, time machine, time lapse, or perhaps time
and a half, that's a nice one to stop on. Don't you think? Either way
for the sake of saving us time I'll keep this somewhat short.
Well if only the Homers had more time perhaps the game wouldn't have
ended as a tie. Yes, it ended in a 14-14 tie against the Paper Tigers.
But that was after an amazing 10 run rally in the bottom of the 7th for
the Homers.
From what I can make out from the attachments of the score sheets it
doesn't appear anyone hit a home run. So if you did feel free to speak up.
There were no little tidbits written up on the sides of the sheet so I
could mention them in write up. Although if my memory serves me well I
recall Andy made a few good catches in the outfield. Austin had a nice
double into the trees. Kim and Annette both made a nice stop playing
2nd and 3rd base. Jeff tried to throw someone out on first when they
got to far off the bag and Rich was there to make the catch. However,
the runner was faster.
Hopefully I listed all the spectators: Sue, Sheila, Haley, Allyssa,
Grandpa, Matt and doggy Nala.
Dinner at Round Table was enjoyed by: Jeff, Rich, Jessica, Ron, Sue,
Austin, Andy, Daniel, Annette, Eric and Rene.
Next weeks game is Tuesday August 11 vs Cinco Equis on HN.
Please let Jeff and Richard know in advance if you are going to miss it.

OK, who had the worst day in the court of public opinion?
- the dentist from Minnesota, who I believe comes from Green Bay,
- Tom Brady, destroyer of cell phones, or
- the Homers, who unfairly brought in some awesome ringers to crush the
friendly and enthusiastic Crawdads, 33 to 22.
Well, Tom still goes home to Gisele, the Homers aren't giving back the W
(our 6th straight by double digits over those guys),
but that dentist - the life he knew is over. We have a winner.
Thanks a ton to Ryan, Mike, and Taylor for subbing, especially when seven
others couldn't make it. And not only did they sub
on short notice (less than 1 day for two of them, to replace three same-day
cancellations), but they played great, getting 11 hits in 15 at bats.

The Homers hit great in the top of the first, lackadaisically collapsed
in the bottom of the inning to fall behind, then crushed the ball the rest
of the day and played good enough D. Ryan, Mike, Rich, Richard, and Ron
all homered, the most legitimate of which were the kids'. On D, Tony caught a
ball shin-high to end the first, Andy caught a pop-up at C and a liner in
RF off their best hitter (the Asian lefty), Kim got to 2B quickly enough for
at least two put outs, and Becky hustled back to 3B on a grounder to the SS's
right to receive the flip for the force to end the game.

Well, as they say... better late than never. Homers v Double Mercy 2015-07-13...
sorry for the lag.
In a month of continued chaos in the Middle East, bad ice cream recalls
(I made that up), and surprising LA thunderstorms and lightning causing mass
confusion (and rumors of some joy) amongst the masses, the Homers delivered
another solid and reliable win... maybe providing a critical, stabilizing,
force that was key to keeping the fabric of LA society from tearing... or
perhaps not... and it was just another nice July game in LA amongst old friends
(emphasis on the old).
Despite an initial strong showing by Double Mercy, the Homers prevailed in the
game. Thanks to Ryan and Troy for supporting the team. Offensive highlights
included Troy and Daniel each had a home(r) run, and Ron, Troy, Annette, Ryan,
Robb, and Tony getting on base each at-bat. Jeff obsessed about not hitting
well this game, so it was appropriate that the one time he got on base Mary
accidently walked off 2nd base and got tagged out, ending the inning, with a
frustrated Jeff on 1st. Defensively good things happened but they are lost
to history...

The events of the Homers vs Wild Turkeys softball game on July 8 2015,
from the perspective of young Castanos.
Sofi - I found a beautiful butterfly and I made two new friends.
Danny - It was lots of fun playing with Clement and the other kids,
especially running through the tunnel.
Bella - Clement went up the path all the way to the road. Some people were
pitching, some people hit the ball, and some people caught the ball.
Those who were actually watching the game would have seen a strong
offensive showing by the Homers. All Homers not only got on base but
also scored. Ron, Taylor, Richard, and Eddie scored every at bat.
Defensively, while some were kind to the jenny Turkey on the field,
Scott showed no mercy at the catcher position, throwing her out at
first and leading to a double play. The game came to an abrupt
conclusion through no action on the part of the Homer defense,
when a Turkey baserunner took himself out by running into a ball
hit between first and second.
The record shows that the game ended with the Homers victorious over
the Turkeys 32-15.
Thank you to Taylor, Eddie and Eric for their first outing with the
Homers.

The Greek financial crisis brings to mind the memory of our original
founder, HOMER. No, not the beer-swilling dad of Simpson's fame,
but the author of such great literary works as the Illiad and the Odyssey.
Spelled Ομηρος in Greek.
While early team records have been lost to the ages, some of his quotes
demonstrate a very unique understanding of the game of softball:
(...) the slow man catches up with the swift.
This particular quotes is dispelled each week as Tony Gr chases slower
HOMERs around the bases to complete a home run.
Reportedly blind, HOMER was the team's original shortstop. Legend holds
that HOMER made throws to first which are eerily similar to modern day
HOMER shortstops.
In more recent history, HOMER has written that the
Ομηροςs beat the
Ομηροςs 12-5 last week.

Playing short-handed, the HOMERS played against a very good Titans team.
The HOMERS fell behind early 11-2, but was able to catch up & keep the
game close. The HOMERS could have won, but couldn't quite pull it off at the
end, losing by 2 runs, 19-21. The HOMERS season record is now 7-3.
The HOMERS banged out 6 home runs in the game. New recruits, Ryan
Gryszko and Andrew Hine, both hit home runs in their HOMERS debut.
Tony Gr blasted out 3 home runs with 7 RBI's. Ron also hit a home run.
Scott went 4 for 4 including a triple.
Defensively, the HOMERS held the heavy-hitting Titans to 'only' 21 runs -
they were capable of scoring 40 runs.
Ron attended his 200th consecutive game, and hasn't missed a HOMERS
game in 12 years.

Some people are gifted with a powerful sense of confidence. This was
apparent Tuesday morning, when on CNN the world was treated to the sight
of Donald Trump announcing that he was running for president. After 20
years of flirting with a run for the Oval Office, the Donald was going
to actually make the effort. He explained that everyone in politics was
stupid and weak, but he was going to get in there and, through his
amazing negotiating skills, or just bald threats, he would intimidate
China, Japan, Mexico, ISIS, Putin, and anyone else in his way, and
restore greatness to the United States of America.
Perhaps Trump's audacity had an unconscious effect on a team of softballers
called the HOMERS. For TWENTY YEARS (plus a few), they have so often
had to struggle and strain, to overtake and pulverize their favorite
opponents, the TOADS. But not on THIS day! Suddenly, perhaps inspired
by the man born in Queens with the dead beaver pelt on his head, the
HOMERS cast off any doubts, any weaknesses, any resemblance to losers,
to DOMINATE over the Toads from the very first pitch!
Just how was this majestic feat accomplished? I will tell you...
Offensively, the HOMERS came out slugging, got ahead, and stayed ahead
throughout the game. Every HOMER who got up to the plate reached base.
Tony Ganino had a 3-run HOMER followed by a solo HOMER by Tony Greicius
in the first inning, an inning that went through nearly the entire
batting order and produced 10 runs. Tony Greicius had his own 3-run
HOMER in the fifth inning. HOMER dominance was such that the Toad's
cool "Mohawk guy" Bobak bobbled twice, playing short-stop. We mercied
them unmercifully several times, and double mercied them in the fourth
and fifth! This must have really broke their spirits, as soon afterward,
Mr. Toad himself (aka Charlie) suggested calling the game after the
sixth.
Defensively, Tony Ganino managed an unassisted double-play in the first.
Greicius was a regular vacuum cleaner in the outfield, snagging a number
of fly balls for outs. Annette also caught a fly ball in the outfield,
and Mary made a put-out at second, catching Ganino's shovel throw from
short. Ron took one for the team while covering home plate, trying to
catch a bullet relay from Ganino, only to be run into by the desperate
Toad runner, hopping madly from third to score. But it was all in
vain – for the Toads, that is.
Happily spectating and cheering were Sue, Scott S, Matt, Daniel, Eric,
Renee, Sofi, Bella, and Danny.

There were a few bright spots from the Homers game this past Monday:
Daniel went 3 for 3 with a Homer and a screaming line drive that
almost knocked the SS's glove off. The sun was pretty bright.
We didn't give up any runs in the 4th inning.
That may be it for bright spots. The Paper Tigers dealt the Homers a
10-23 loss. We don't need to get into the rest of the details, as it
wasn't pretty (we took three mercy outs). There were some nice defensive
plays, but not enough to make up for three innings of scoreless offensive
effort.

Talk of corruption has swirled around major sports for years. There are
big bucks to made by the less than scrupulous. People in positions of
power can sell their influence to eager sponsors willing to do anything
to get what they want.
No, I am not talking about FIFA, I am talking about the HOMERS.
Rumors were running rampant this week, that HOMERS manager Sepp (hey,
that is sort of similar to Jeff) Osman took in bribes to determine which
HOMERS players would be sent to play for Double Mercy when they ended up
being short of players. What else could explain his willingness to give
up key HOMERS stalwarts Richard, Robb, and Andy so quickly? (At least
the HOMERS were able to reclaim Andy part way through the game!) The
question remains, what did Sepp get in return???
Despite the HOMERS generosity with their personnel, the HOMERS easily
defeated Double Mercy.

We played against the Eclectic Eccentrics. We had multiple mercy outs
because we got 10 runs in the 3rd inning and EE was never really able to
catch up. Eric and Daniel had to leave early, but not before Eric made a
play at 2nd base. Tony Ga did a cycle and Tony Gr sacrificed his jeans in
the last inning by sliding to catch the 3rd out, which resulted in a horrible
grass stain. Home runs by Tony Ganino in the 6th, Tony Greicius in 3rd and
6th and Scott in the 3rd. By the end it was EE 12 and Homers 25

I was shooting for the fastest Homers report in history, but the
stupid OneNote App wouldn't email the page like the real program does.
So Ron, no need to make a new stat... yet.
First inning:
2 outs by Tony at short + one error on throw to first
Beautiful kick ball to first for the last out from other team.
3-0 bad guys
2nd inning:
Rob (2 outs) and Tony (1) show on defense
Nice hit by Scott. RBIs for Tony and Annette
3-2 bad guys
3rd inning:
Got the out at first, but Ron tried to hold runner at third...didn't work.
Rob tried to put out runner from second to third...didn't work
Slim gets pop-up to end inning
Through the legs HR on a grounder to LF for Richard. Seeing eye swing
bunt for Jessica. Slim showed he is a team player by taking the 2 RBI
ground rule double instead of the grand slam attempt. Slim with base
running issues that turn out to be a tactical move to confuse the defense.
Ground rule doubles for Scott and Tony. Little hurdle action on 3rd base
line by Tony to get Annette the RBI. Richard with the pop-up blooper to
RF scores a run. Becky nice hit to center for another RBI.
14-7 good guys
4th inning:
Charging grounder and throw from Tony at SS. Richard stole one from the 14 year old with a sliding catch at center.
Nice pull to LF for Rob to bring in 2. Tony finished inning with cheesy
post-3rd-out sort-of-HR.
19-7 good guys
5th inning:
Great catches by Slim and Richard in the outfield.
19-7 good guys
6th inning
All SS inning to end the game.
19-8 Homers win
Bubba summarized the game: Anyway, like I was sayin', crawdads is the
fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it,
saute it. Dey's uh, crawdad-kabobs, crawdad creole, crawdad gumbo.
Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple crawdad,
lemon crawdad, coconut crawdad, pepper crawdad, crawdad soup, crawdad stew,
crawdad salad, crawdad and potatoes, crawdad burger, crawdad sandwich.
That- that's about it.

Homers management announced today that ALL Homers players
were declaring their candidacy for the 2016 Presidential campaign.
When asked the rationale for such a decision, management replied "We feel
that with the number of candidates already declared, no one will notice
another 15 or 20 additional candidates. Plus, it gives us a broader
platform to push our agenda across a national stage." What is that
agenda management was asked? "Equality for all softball players, and
better playing conditions. In particular, fewer gopher holes on the
field and no ground ruled doubles in right." They further commented "We
have not yet finalized all of the issues our candidates will be
articulating. One un-named candidate is currently working on a plank
which will represent the advancement of cost effective beer
technologies. However, all the details are not yet available."
On a non-political front, the HOMERS staged a late game come back and
prevailed over a determined Cinco Equis team, 14-11.
Offensively the HOMERS waged a steady attack, tying the game in the 6th
and forging the lead for the first time in the 7th. In the pivotal 7th,
Robb, Slim, and Annette hit one out singles, setting the stage for back
to back home runs by Tony Gr. (a grand slam and his second homer of the
game), and Richard. Eric also had two solid hits, one in the sixth and
one in the seventh.
The game was one of the better defensive games for the HOMERS in quite
some time. Richard made a key double play, flawlessly fielding a
ground ball at short, stepping on second, and throwing (actually
accurately) to Robb at first. Eric made two nice plays at catcher,
throwing out one runner at first and narrowly missing another put-out.
The HOMERS would also like to thank Min Feng for ably substituting,
thus avoiding the awkward 'not enough women' situation.

The young McKringleberries thought they'd have an easy time when they saw
the old, slow, and banged up Homers pre-game, only to be disappointed as
so many Kentucky Derby bettors before them (especially those betting with
Osman money!). The Homers never relinquished the lead in this one,
hitting three homeruns enroute to another conquest, 2 by Daniel (who's
this guy's hitting coach?) and 1 by, ummmm, I forget - oh yeah, Ron!
There were apparently no notable defensive plays, as there were no notes,
but the team's most versatile player made a couple of nice stretches at
first to both secure outs and work his bad hammy, and Dave Seal tried to
hog the entire 6th inning by catching 2 of the 3 outs.
Dinner was held at Round's with points awarded to Sue, Ron, Jeff, Robb, Scott
