The algorithm to determine the winner:

  • number of regular season games attended
  • if tied, irregular season games attended
  • if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season games
  • if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
  • Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting order, 2) the order of sitting out defensively, and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular game.

    29 August 2018: Crawdads 8, Homers 19

    From: Abby Couto

The Homers kicked off their last game of a remarkable 2018 season with a (near) record-breaking inning. Richard, Tony Gr, Eric, and Brian contributed to 4 home runs in the first inning, 1 away from tying the all-time record of 5 home runs in one inning, set a mere 20 years ago.

The fireworks didn’t end with the first inning, as Tony Ga, Will, and Abby added one HR each in the second inning, and Richard got his second HR in the fourth inning.

Homers defense was just as solid with two scoreless innings, holding the Crawdads to just 8 runs over 6 innings. There were some defensive highlights throughout the game, but they, like the sweet memories of summer, faded from our thoughts over Labor Day weekend as we enter the darkness of fall, winter, and NO SOFTBALL :(

On the bright side, there are still at least 2 opportunities to hang out with the Homers gang before the 2019 season begins! The first is in two weeks at Jeff’s house, Saturday 9/22, for a BBQ! Please RSVP when possible. The second will be Super Bowl Sunday at Robb’s in February. Reservations will open in a couple months, but prime-couch-seating is first-come, first-served.

On behalf of all the Homers rookies, thank you all for a great opening season!

    21 August 2018: McKringleberries 17, Homers 19

    From: Johnny McGrory

With the end of the season in sight, the Homers were determined to come home with a win. On Tuesday, the unlucky opponent this week was named [see attached image].

The Homers fielded another long line-up, with 15 players being accounted for and managed to perfection by Scott. After a slow start in the first inning, the Homers got the bats moving and put up a defensive wall, giving up only 3 runs in three innings while scoring 15. The scoring was led by Tony Gr with 2 home runs and Ron adding another to the home run tally. The defense was stepping up big with Will making two incredible catches out in left field (one of which was way in foul territory) and Laura having a big play to first to get us out of the inning. The Homers walked away with a 19-17 victory heading into the final game of the season.

However, the MVP of the game goes to "The Baby-Whisperer", Ana Morino, who was able to do the impossible and get Dora to stop crying while Richard was away! (And no, Ana's love for Baby did not concern Johnny).

The final game of the season will be against the Crawdads at Hahamonga Watershed Park @ 530 PM on 8/29 on the South (grass) field.

    15 August 2018: Voodoo Toad Fury 18, Homers 17

    From: Will Reid

Last Tuesday saw a classic Homers vs. Toads matchup. The competition, steeped in C-League history, was fierce and took the game down to the wire in the seventh. Unfortunately, the result for the Homers was a one-run loss, however the real winners of the day were participation and furry pitch invaders....

A total of 18 players were fielded for the Homers. Highlights of the night included: diving catches and attempts by Abbey and Johnny, a Tony Gr. triple that was almost a home run, Ana getting stuck in a rundown but cooly making it to third, some impressive outfielding by both Richard and Tony Gr, and Tony Ga's ambidextrous batting moves (the outfield didn't seem impressed). Also, management of the 18-strong roster was an impressive feat by Scott.

The current political climate was reflected in a couple of questionable fielding placements. The Homers were observed to be one female short in the field at one point. Amongst howls from the Toads this was quickly remedied. Abbey, the replacement fielder, quickly made the Toads eat their hats with two outs for the inning.

Brian, playing in left field, upon attempting to field a pop-up fly ball was impeded by a curious canine. The dog and Brian came out of the incident unscathed. Toad-Dog collusion mutterings were heard, the outfield impostor quickly replied "fake news" on Twitter, a special prosecutor has been appointed.

    6 August 2018: Homers 25, Eclectic Eccentrics 7

    From: Laura Napoli

It was another scorcher when the Homers met the Eclectic Eccentrics -- the kinda day that you could fry bacon on your bare arms. The Homers tried to stay at bat as long as possible just to keep out of the sun, and bat they did, to the tune of 25 runs, including 5 home runs by the likes of: Ron, Will (one regular/one a Grand Slam), Daniel (who woulda had two if his team hadn't told him to take it easy) and the bruiser, Jeff, who has, let's face it, been holding himself back because he didn't want to embarrass the rest of us.

    Highlights of the Game:
    1) A tremendous 5-3 double play that started with Ana who fielded the grounder with panache, stepped on third, and fired across the field to Brian where he respectfully tagged the runner at first to complete the double play and end the inning.
    2) And a huge win for gender equality where two out of the six innings boasted an all female infield except for Ron. To remedy this, Laura has begun rigorous training with Rick Honeycutt, so she will be on the mound next week.

    24 July 2018: Homers 22, Wild Turkeys 15

    From: Robb Warren

Please note SPECIAL LOCATION ALERT at the end of this report.

Recently some Homer faithful have been questioning the allocation of their annual Homer's dues. Specifically, how are any residual funds being distributed, and how can there be increased transparency in the distribution of said funds. Are excess funds being funneled off to pay for the lavish lifestyles of Homers Management? Are they being used to charter jets to Homer away games, or possibly pay for lavish penthouse suites while they throw secretive parties for high ranking league officials? It has just been learned that nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, Homer Management has been funding an extensive R&D organization located in a secluded bunker somewhere within the confines of Brown Mountain. And.... that the HOMers R&D organization (HOMRAD) is about to release it's first product which will revolutionize the way future softball will be played. "Defense Be-Gone" (patent pending) is a pocket sized aerosol can which will eliminate defenses when sprayed toward an opposing defense. Before and after pictures taken during recent beta testing at an undisclosed location are included below. It must be noted that some adverse results have been reported when volume and wind speed are not taken into account.

    Before "Defense Be-Gone"

    After "Defense Be-Gone"

After applying a liberal dose of Defense Be-Gone to the Wild Turkeys, the Homers proceeded to take a 21-3 lead on their way to a 22-15 victory. Offensive highlights included homers by Tony Gr, Johnny, and Chad. Ron, Tony Gr, and Chad reached base in each of their at bats. At one point Will managed to disappear in a cloud of dust between second and third, but thankfully emerged unscathed.

The Homers played relatively solid defense until a wind shift in the 5th caused a bit of the "adverse results" previously mentioned. Highlights included a "I'll snag everything thrown to first base" first inning by Johnny, a Tony Ga to Laura put out at second, and a snag of a line drive by Tony Ga at short.

    Here are the salient details.
    Wild Turkeys 0 2 1 0 6 6 15

Option 1: Junkyard in Simi Valley. Attendees... none
Option 2: Rounds in Pasadena. Attendees... Jeff, Robb, Rich, Will, Genevieve, Scott, Ron. Sue, Chad, Brian, and Laura. Discussions centered primarily around future HOMRAD products still in the early stages of development, including "Offense Be-Gone" and "In-laws Be-Gone".

    10 July 2018: Titans 11, Homers 25

    From: Tony Greicius

The HOMERS were ready for a big game against the Titans. Unfortunately their usual players were all on vacation and many of their players needed pinch runners. However, the merciless HOMERS decided to crush them anyways and put them in double mercy. The final score was 25-11 and we ended the game after the HOMERS hit for only four innings.

A lot of great defensive plays, including the hilarious ground ball that went up the middle. Tony was poaching in front of the cones and grabbed the grounder at second base, however, Becky didn't see him and tried to stop the ball with her foot. She stepped on Tony's glove preventing him from lifting his glove and making the double play. The best catch of the day was by Will who caught a ball over his shoulder in foul territory in left field. Later in the game we had Becky, Abby and Anna in the infield - they were the solid iron curtain.

A lot of home runs during our four innings. Abby started the home run derby in the first inning. 10 batters later in the same inning, Will hit a grand slam to end the inning with a mercy out. Other home runs were hit by Chad, Tony G., and Johnny.

After game events was the horse petting zoo where we got to meet the 34 year old stallion.

For dinner, someone suggested Sonics in Murrieta, but due to time constraints the decision was to go

to Rounds. The usual people attended, however Richard had to leave before the game since Clement wasn't feeling well.

We have a BYE next week so get some rest.

    25 June 2018: Homers 22, Double Mercy 14

    From: Ron Baalke

Some members of the Homers decided to get in some extra softball practice and thought it would be cool to practice in some caves in Thailand. But the caves become flooded, trapping the Homers. Four Homers were rescued in time for the Double Mercy game.

In the game, it was back-n-forth in the early innings, and tied 7-7 after the 2nd inning. The Homers then scored 10 runs & mercied the Double Mercy in the 4th inning (17-7), and held on to win.
     Homers 2 5 3 7 5 0 - 22
     Double Mercy 5 2 0 1 4 2 - 14

The HOMERS improve their season record to 8-1.

Defense: Abby played most of the game at shortshop and played great. Tony Ganino had a double play.

Offense: Jeff led off the game with a surprise double. Home runs were hit by Chad, Tony Greicius, Tony Ganino (2) and Will. Ron & Tony Greicius went 3 for 3.

    20 June 2018: Homers 17, Paper Tigers 7

    From: Daniel Limonadi

For the last year+ everyone has been talking about Westworld as the ultimate in exclusive "live out the life of your dreams and find out who you really are" resort... but, too often over-looked is the softball enthusiasts paradise of "Hahamongna-World, Ultimate C-League", where you get to pretend to know how to play softball (some of us, anyway), and clobber teams of hosts... with little remorse and only occasional mercy. Oh, who amongst us is a true softball player? What makes one a softball player? Is there a hierarchy of skills that must first be achieved? Is it emergent? The debate rages on...

Right... anyway... back in the real world,

The Homers grabbed the lead in the first inning against the Paper Tigers and never looked back. Offensive highlights of the game included Tony Gr hitting 2 home-runs in his 2 at-bats before he had to leave, Will got on base each at-bat and ended with a homer. The defense is really what won us the game - Johnny, in his Homer debut (with some flashy bright shoes for the occasion), played 1st base most of the game and did a great job there, including receiving a slightly hard to field running throw from Richard late in the game. Ana had a nice catch in the OF and good play with a hard throw from 3rd to Daniel at 1st to get the runner out. Megan had a nice jump catch in the OF as well. Thanks to Scott for his excellent field management, despite the occasional unabashedly disrespectful player (cough, Richard).

    13 June 2018: Homers 17, Voodoo TOAD Fury 14

    From: Scott Morgan

The world watched as the historic summit took place. The leaders of the opposing teams, Donald J Toad and Kim Jun-Chen, met before the game began. An agreement was reached prior to the first pitch. Supreme Leader Chen agreed to limit the Homer offense; President Toad agreed to not destroy the Homers. Following the second inning, where the TOADS mercied the Homers, President Toad tweeted that his bats were bigger than the Homer bats. An enraged Supreme Leader tweeted back that the President was merely a dotard and unleashed the Homer offense. The Homers not only recovered from the ten run deficit but went on to beat the Toads 17-14.

    Defensive highlights included:
    - Tony Gr making a running catch in the first inning
    - Richard throwing out Charlie at first from right field
    - Jeff making a tumbling catch in right field
    - Richard and Ana teaming up for a double play

    29 May 2018: Eclectic Eccentrics 17, Homers 25

    From: Brian White

    A very delayed Homer's report...

    Hello Sports Fans,

It's been two weeks since the Homers last game and it was quite the slobberknocker. The Homers charged ahead early in the game and left little doubt they would come out ahead. The bats were alive and a lot of heads up baserunning helped add to our final score of 25-17. Some mercy's here and there kept the Eclectic Eccentrics in the game but it was all Homers all the time.

There was some sharp fielding all around with some spectacular throws. The players thought they knew better than the manager, Scott, as he assigned players to a position and they abruptly ignored him and went where they wanted to anyway.

25,000 JPL Fans attended "A Ticket to Explore JPL" this past weekend and Ron Baalke hit his 250th career home run this past game. With 275, he gets a set of steak knives.

We had our own "A League of Their Own" moment in the final inning where our infield was comprised entirely of kickass women.

Daniel arrived late and left early to get his car fixed while Annette stayed and represented.

Brian is currently batting 1.000 (even though it's not something we keep track of) and too proud of it right now.

Laura Napoli came to support the Homers by doing her best Benedict Arnold impression and played on the other team.

Sue, Dora, Clement, Bella and Sophie came to support and we lost track of who was at Dinner since we were separated throughout Round Table. Tonight's game (that's right, tonight) will be against Voodoo TOAD Fury, our heated rivals. At least as heated as C League softball can get...

    From: Chad Galley

    And here's the report!

JPL announced that May had the most launches than any other month in its history. Clearly, they were including in that count all the home runs we put into orbit during last week's game! Thanks to Tony Gr, Will, and Abby for showing Single Swing To Orbit how it's done. Other highlights included Will's highlight-reel diving catch in the outfield, Richard's double-play-that-coulda-been-a-triple-play-if-there-were-three-outs-to-get, a 14-run inning by everyone, and many others.

Spectators: Sue got a break from playing this week.

Dinner: I'm sure it was somewhere but I couldn't make it and delegated the choice to Richard... I think it was a pizza place but not Rounds.

Next week's game is (ahem...) tomorrow! We're playing Eclectic Eccentrics on the north field (the one with all the dirt). Let Richard and/or Jeff know if you can't make it as soon as you can.

    From: Ana Morino

Sorry for the delayed report, I was struggling with writers block! But without further ado, here's the report!

    Game Recap:
We played a great game despite losing some of our star players early on. Our defense was fantastic. Even with only 3 in the outfield and no one at second base, we held our lead. Our batting, as always, amazing! Highlights below. And a big shout out to Sue for stepping in to hit.

    Highlights:
Will hit 2 home runs! And probably set a Homer record for fastest time around the bases.
Tony Gr hit 1 home run. Then kept running to his Glendale game.
Ana's first up at bat was a double. Her first in Homer history. A huge accomplishment for someone of her size.
Tony Ga had 1 home run and on defense made some great plays a short stop
Eric should have had 2 home runs! The outfielders were positioned deep in anticipation of how hard he hits, so unfortunately they were caught. But I seriously thought those hits were going to the other field!

    Spectators:
None? (Sue at first but stepped up to the plate when we needed a 2nd woman)

    7 May 2018: Homers 13, Cinco Equis 17

    From: Sue Kientz

It was a bright spring day when the undefeated 2018 HOMERS tripped merrily into the North Hahamonga field, slightly understaffed but not at all suspecting that they would leave bowed and slightly broken (in spirit), as the green-shirted Cinco Equis would shut down the HOMER machine in mid-innings, drawing out the game with strange pitching techniques that would force an end to the game after only 4 ½ innings. This was so disturbing an outcome that a funny intro for this report was impossible to dream up. In fact, I can only offer Honesty. My volunteering to write this report was to reach one end only: Rounds. It's early in the season and I'm already sick of Round Table! I feel about Round Table like Sam Kinison felt about the women he dated. Ahh! AHHH!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!

But I digress. The first inning and fourth inning showed HOMER offense at its best. Brian hit a 2-run HR (his first in HOMER history!) in the first and nearly the entire lineup batted. But some base hits in the second nor Chad's triple (and run) in the third were not enough to keep the lead, as the XXXXX tied us by the bottom of the third. The fourth inning was promising even as it was a bit odd, with Sue actually coming out of retirement to bat for Becky, who had left. She failed to reach first, but afterward the HOMER faithful seemed inspired to score some runs. Unfortunately, a big inning by the CEs put them ahead, and the HOMERS could not rise to the occasion as darkness fell and the game ended in the Fifth.

Defensively I can only tell you about the first inning, as that's when someone wrote very helpful little notations on the score sheet (me actually, as Jeff was heroically comforting Dora at the time, giving Clement a break from his uber-heroic efforts). It was then that Annette made a great play at second, nearly completing a double play. Ron made a good catch for an out, and Richard and Chad combined to end the inning and keep the Equis at only a run.

Much thanks and kudos to Carl (first time playing with us) and Taylor for filling in on short notice, so we could field the team and stay competitive most of the game.

    25 April 2018: Pitches Be Crazy 8, Homers 23

    From: Richard Chen

National Radio Hall of Famer Carl Kassell passed away two weeks ago, and to honor his career at NPR and especially his final landing spot on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", let's play "Bluff the Listener", where you pick which one of the following stories about our new Homers is true. Winners receive a recording of Jeff's voice on their voice mail or answering machine.
    1. Eric Gustafson: despite having a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and working in Inner Planet Navigation, Eric got lost during a motorcycle rally in 2016 and deeply resented the time spent stopping for directions, compelling him to design and build a hands-free, voice-free GPS guidance device.
    2. Emma Herrick: our recent graduate from Embry-Riddle at Prescott was chosen by FC Kansas City in the 5th round of the 2017 NWSL draft but instead came to JPL to better pursue her dream of becoming an astronaut.
    3. Abby Couto: our other recent graduate and soccer player from ERAU chose JPL over SpaceX because she got waitlisted for the Tesla Roadster.
    4. Ana Morino: perhaps unsurprisingly given her local ties (high school in Fillmore, then SDSU) and her commitment to community, Ana hosted 11 groups on Lab for visits in her first 6 months, setting a new JPL record by any employee for any 6-month span.
    5. Will Reid: during his postdoc in robotics here at JPL, Will is collaborating with colleagues at the Australian Space Agency to develop their own open-source rover, nominally scheduled for launch in 2023.
    Answer after the box score.

Spectators: Scott, Sue, and Will's wife Genevieve, who came at the end of the game.
Manager: Jeff, who masterfully set the defenses: 15 players, 2 early departures, minimal delays. I spotted only one spot for improvement (answer after the other answer), but in real time, that was a solid A.
Dinner at Round Table: everyone but the two Tonies (Tonys?), Becky, Brian, and Emma.

OK, all 5 items were genuinely fake news (i.e. not news that I dislike), for I made them all up, but they all sound plausible, right, especially the astronaut bit, right? Actually, if you chose #5, you really, really need to take the ITAR training. And had Becky played 2B in the last inning with Ana sitting, everyone who didn't leave early would have played 5 innings.

As for the game, we played well against a nice team of young people, Pitches Be Crazy. Our kids outplayed their kids, like Abby at 3B catching 2 line drives and throwing to Ana at 2B to double off the runner to account for all 3 outs in the 6th. Due to the mercy rule and the double mercy rule, we Homers made only 11 outs in the full game. Home runs came from Ron, Daniel, Abby, and Eric.

We have a bye this week - our next game is Monday, May 7. Reminder to all: please please please tell Jeff and/or me at least a day in advance if you can't make it. Rounding up same day subs is difficult.

    18 April 2018: Bruisers 11, Homers 25

    From: Jeff Osman

The media is hounding HOMERS management. Tweets are flying left and right. Social media memes are popping up everywhere.

Amid all of this "fake news" buzz the only statement that HOMERS manager Jeff has released is a simple "No collusion. No collusion what so ever!"

What has caused this crisis in the world of JPL C-league softball? Wild accusations about the HOMERS off-season recruiting efforts!

Despite the rumors, there is no proof that HOMERS management did anything improper in finding several new impressive additions to the team whose impact was immediately felt as the HOMERS began their 2018 campaign by beating the Bruisers 25 to 11.

Yes, the HOMERS knew they were off to a good start when their lead-off hitter, Ron, started the season with the first home run in the first inning. Before the celebration for that hit was done he was joined by home runs from Daniel, and HOMERS rookies Abby and Will in the same inning. The home runs kept coming with Tony Gr (this HR may require an asterisk, however, as Tony clearly took advantage of a questionable Bruiser overthrow which may have been caused by Tony carrying his bat all around the bases!), Richard, Eric and Ron (again) contributing throughout the rest of the game. Several HOMERS players contributed offensively by reaching base every time they came up to bat including: Robb, Eric, Ana, Tony Gr, Richard, Abby, Will, and Becky

Defensively the game highlights belonged to the HOMERS women. Abby was impressive in her HOMERS debut at 3rd base, while HOMERS rookie Emma made several good catches at 2nd base as well. Not to let the rookies have all the fun Annette made a good defensive stop or two as well.

The post game celebration was held at Round Table and was attended by Daniel, Annette, Ron, Sue, Scott, Rich, Robb, Eric, Jeff, Becky, Sofi, Danny, Bella, Richard, Clement, and Dorothea.

The HOMERS next game is on Wednesday April 25 against Pitches Be Crazy on the same field, HS. As always please let Richard and Jeff know well in advance if you aren't going to make it.
