The algorithm to determine the winner:
number of regular season games attended
if tied, irregular season games attended
if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season
games
if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting
order,
2) the order of sitting out defensively,
and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't
have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular
game.

This week, we can almost feel a little SORRY for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Yes, yes, they clinched the National League Western Division. But they still
need to finish the season, then win playoff games, then win the National
League Pennant, and then – only THEN -- will they get to the World Series
and have a chance winning that coveted, pinnacle prize.
JPL C-League isn't like that. You only have to do one thing, to win the
"World Series," at least when you're a HOMER. You must just BEAT THE TOADS.
Repeat after me, **BEAT** **THE** ****TOADS**** in the final game of the
summer. That will set you up for the entire off-season. You might not
believe this, but there are a lot of HOMERS (well, at least 3) who are
still telling each other "WE BEAT THE TOADS!!!"
So kudos to one of the GREATEST HOMER LINEUPS of THIS CENTURY
(and maybe the last century, too!) Bask in your (jpl c-league) WORLD
SERIES WIN!!
Defense: Some great plays were executed with gusto, such as when Spencer
in RF threw to Jeff at catcher to get the runner at the plate, and Chad
in RCF threw to Richard at short, who caught a runner on the base path.
Becky caught a fly-out in the 4th, Ana in foul territory made a key out in
the 7th, and Abby stopped several balls from getting into the outfield for
multi-base hits in the 7th, one an impressive out as well.
Offense: The game got off to a great start with a two-run double by Spencer
with bases loaded, eventually ending the HOMER first with 4 runs, which the
9-member TOADS unfortunately matched in the bottom of the inning. By the
fourth inning, the HOMERS were ahead and never looked back, even as the
VTF threatened in the 6th. Every HOMER (except Tony "Goodness" Grecius who
only stayed one-half inning) got at least one hit, and Spencer walloped
a HOMER in the 5th. Otherwise it was "death by 1,000 cuts" to the Toads,
as in, lots of solid hits, that put the HOMERS over the top.

In a rematch of a close game from 2 weeks ago, the TATERS squared off
against the Dwarves at Loma Alta field. The teams decided to pay homage
to MLB's players weekend. No, not by wearing black and white pajamas
during the game, but by using nicknames. This worked for the TATERS as
they narrowly defeated the Dwarves 14-13.
Offensively, no homers were hit; the decisive run was scored by The
Wizard on a disputed play at the plate. Defensive highlights included a
double play from Scooter to Switcher, a catch against the fence in foul
territory by Aztec, and King somehow pitching a scoreless inning.
Dinner was at Rounds with El Jeffe, Spaceman, Switcher, Flash,
No Surrender, Rabbit, Enchanted, King, Aztec, The Wizard, Scooter,
Superfan, Sam, Explorer, Big Ben.

No one bats 1.000, not every call can get made, and each defeat makes
victory that much sweeter. It's C-League softball folks, we're out there
to have a good time. After a phone call to the commissioner of B-League,
asking them to reschedule the match-up of Richard and Tony's other teams
(we don't feel neglected... it's fine,) the Homers took the field with
their mighty 10, no substitutions, and Scott as their fearless field
manager. A huge shout out to Ryan, Angela, and Spencer subbing in. This
was Angela and Spencer's first game with the Homers. Spencer celebrated
by hitting the only Homers homer.
The Homers jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning.
There was a great double play when Chad caught a fly ball in LCF and threw
to Leah at second base to nab the runner attempting to tag-up. The game
went back and forth, the Titans relentless in their hitting and their
umpiring. It was neck and neck into the 7th inning where the Homers came
up short.
We'll get a chance for revenge tomorrow night at Loma Alta Park (NOT
HAHAMONGA, IF YOU NEED A RIDE, LET JEFF OR RICHARD KNOW) as we clash
against the Titans once again. Remember to let Jeff and Richard know
if you will not be able to attend.

Bella's report: My mom did a great play at the end of the game. The rest of
the team also did good. The Homers is a very good team because they beat a
lot of teams. Go Homers! Can't forget about a joke: "My boss told me to
have a good day... So I went home"
A few more highlights:
Johnny opened the game by making all three outs in the top of the first and
then proceeding to hit a home run in the bottom of the first. The two other
Homer HRs of the game were hit by Will in the second and then sixth innings.
Leah had a great catch at second in the 7th.

The game was played on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon
landing. 600 million people watched the Apollo 11 landing on live TV, of
which at least 7 would become Homers.
The Homers were short-handed, so Ryan and Chris were called in. the Homers
though only played with 9 people on the field the first two innings. They
fell behind 5-0 after the first inning. Becky and Will would show up to have
a full line-up, and the Homers scored at least 3 runs per inning after the
scoreless 1st inning.
The HOMERS improve their season record to 10-2.
Offense:
Abby hit a 3-run triple and a 3-run home run. She later added a single and
double to complete the cycle! The first cycle game since Tony Ganino in 2016.
Abby becomes the first female Homer to hit for the cycle.
That's one small step for a Homer, one giant leap for Homerkind
Brian also went 4 for 4. Ron, Chris, Ryan and Annette had 3 hits
apiece.
Defense:
Annette caught popup foul ball at catcher. Ryan forced a runner from the
outfield to Brian at 3rd base. Johnny also forced a runner from the
outfield, and again to Brian at 3rd.

For those of us who identify as a fan of "sports", not just softball,
it is truly a remarkable time, particularly those in tune with the
International scene. The Tour de France is in full swing, as is the
conclusion of Wimbledon. Up soon, the British Open (or, more correctly,
THE OPEN). Just completed, the FIFA Womens World Cup where a squad from
the US completely stole the show (NOTE: Homers management has once again
demonstrated their forethought and trend setting policies, given that for
years they have ensured that Homers women and men HAVE RECEIVED EQUAL PAY).
On the local front, all eyes in the baseball world were on the elegant
resort destination of Cleveland, Ohio as they hosted the All Star game.
However, true sports aficionados turned their attention to the event that
transcends all other world sporting events... another Homers game at the
historic and legendary Hahamonga Field.
The Homers were once again up to the challenge, defeating the Paper Tigers
13-8. The mercy rule was enjoyed by the Homers for much of the game, but
a determined Paper Tiger team inched their way back into contention, scoring
7 runs over the last two innings. Defensive highlights were plentiful this
time, the defensive gem award going to a Chad throw to Abby, a perfect relay
to Annette at home, who put a solid tag on the player charging down the line.
Abby also made a stellar play earlier, fielding a ground ball at short,
tagging the runner going to third, then throwing to Rich at first to complete
the double play. Leah made a nice catch on a foul pop up to end the 4th
inning. On the offensive side of the journal, all Homers reached base at
least once, with Homers being hit by Tony Gr. and Johnnie.
Now, the salient details.

SPECIAL SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
A slight deviation from the usual "please let Richard and Jeff know..."
caveat. For next weeks game (Monday 07/15 against the Crawdads on the
dirt field), please also let Scott know if you are unable to attend.
In addition, the Homers attendance appears to be unusually light, thus if
you know of an able bodied individual (or even someone short of being
comatose), please invite them to participate in the game.
From: Annette Nasif
It was a beautiful day as the Homers took the field against the Crawdads.
The game started off well with a great stop by Richard and throw to Leah
for a force out in the 1st inning. Then Richard and Chad each hit a home
run. At the end of the 1st inning we were up 3-0 and the Homers only
widened the lead from there. In the 4th inning Ron stopped the ball and
thew it to Leah who stretched to catch the ball and force the out. Will
hit a great home run in the 5th inning. And Abby was robbed of a potential
home run when a Crawdad outfielder sacrificed his body to make a crazy,
body slamming catch. Ron, playing at 3rd base, snagged a line drive in the
6th inning. In the last inning there was a great Abby to Brian play that
forced an out at the plate. In the end, the Homers triumphed 13 to 4.
Special kudos to Abby who skipped her B-league game to play this game,
proving that she is truly a Homer at heart.

The Homers faced off against Voodoo Toad Fury last Wednesday, and although
ending the game 26-17, were able to hold their heads high knowing that
they wouldn't have to change the team name to "Double Mercy," after a late
rally to come back to "No Mercy."
A few defensive highlights were had against the Toads, including a catch
by Becky at 2nd and a throw to home from Brian in the outfield. Ana and
Richard valiantly held down SS in Abbys absence, while the right side of
the field worked to hold off the nearly 50% lefty hitters on the Toads.
Solid pitching from Ron as well as some plays from Jeff at catcher rounded
out the infield.
Offensively, the Homers rallied in the last three innings, led by
Richard's 3 RBI double in the 6th, and Lauras "Keep 'em guessing"
switch hitting, which landed her a solid hit over 2nd base.

Throughout the season there have been rumors that we may be playing alongside
a celebrity. On June 10th, 2019 JPL Space confirmed that the rumors were true.
Our very own Richard Chen is a blackjack mastermind! Could the secret to his
consistency of getting on base be that he counts pitches? Is Abby a member
of this secret "counting pitches" society? She added another homer to her
JPL C-League career! And a few defensive highlights to hold our lead in this
high scoring game were when Richard threw out a runner from the outfield
to Ana at 3rd base, Leah's dive at 2nd base to stop the ball from entering
the outfield (She has scars to prove!!) and some great catches from our
outfielders.

The excitement was palpable last night at the ball park as the lead bounced
back and forth so much the fans didn't know if it was softball or ping-pong.
The Homers got a bit of a shock to their system when the EEs took off running,
and hitting, at the top of the game. It took a DP from Ron and Rich in the
First to help shut down the Eccentrics. The Eccentrics scoring wasn't as
eccentric as their name, as their biggest innings were in the First and
Fifth. While the Homers, after they warmed up their bats in the Second, had
a nice average of runs through inning four, five and six. As the Homers'
bats swung in the late half of the game, the Homers' outfield was supported
with some top defensive plays: a catch by Leah in right center field and
a pick-off from Richard to Ana at third -- both in inning number five.
Offensive shout outs to Abby with a triple and Chad with a victory sealing
home run (even after the EEs tried to break his hand) in the Sixth.

NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF SPORT
Our own Rich Benesh won the NBA draft lottery with a ticket purchased at
7-11. When informed that the prize for winning the lottery was the 6 foot 7,
285 pound Zion Williamson, Rich declined the award stating: "Who can afford
to feed that guy?"
In the Kentucky Derby, the winner of the race, Maximum Security, was
disqualified for being a dirty rotten cheater. Officials found the Maximum
Security had tied together the shoelaces of the other horses and then
collided with them at the top of the stretch. Maximum Security was placed
17th; no comment was available from the horse.
The Homers made quick work of the Bruisers, holding the Bruisers hitless
through 3 innings. Notable defensive plays were Chad's falling catch and
Will's running catch in left field, and an outfield put out by Tony Gr
to Laura at second. Homers were hit by Abby and Tony Gr.

Last week, the Homers were skeptical of the authenticity of their opponent's
team name from the start. Homers offense was determined to turn the tables on
Double Mercy, and the strategy was so effective that 6 out of 7 innings had a
mercy out. Will and Brian each contributed a homerun, and Rich was solid with
3 consecutive doubles and a single. Daniel went 3 for 3 and was one homerun
(and probably just one more at-bat) away from the cycle! On the sidelines,
Dora continues to show true potential during batting practice with Ana.
Offense wasn't the only thing going for the Homers though; defense was just
as solid! Will came up with two great running catches in the outfield. Our
female 4-5-6 infield locked it in with consistent performance, with
particularly good plays from Ana at third and Leah at second.

Redemption. After narrowly losing last week's game, the Homers were out for
blood... and apparently it worked since our team handily trounced the LA
Radars at Loma Alta park. The victory came in large part thanks to gracious
last minute subs by Ryan and Travis, without whom we would have been
shorthanded. Oh, and, cough, maybe also because Abby and Anna played short
stop the entire game? Couldn't resist.
Defensive highlights included another excellent showing by the almost all
female Homers in field. Chad did an excellent job on first base, receiving
many well placed throws from Abby, Anna, and Leah. Leah had an inning where
she made 2 outs at second. Richard made an excellent sliding catch,
surprising one of the runners, and connecting with Anna at 3rd for a double
play. Ryan also had a great running catch of a big hit deep into center
field, stealing a likely home run from the Radars.
On the offensive front, Richard got on base every at bat, and most everyone
got on base a majority of their opportunities. Daniel got out of his home
run slump and managed to get his first 2 homers of the season, 1 deserved
and one due to greedy running... channeling Will since he was not with
us.

"Disgusting!"
That was the response of the Homers Executive Committee when learning of
the Homers losing a 21-20 squeaker.
"What happened?"
"Richard had to play shortstop for half the game!".
"What?!?!? Everyone knows that's as dumb as letting Rich hit with the
game on the line!"
In all actuality, this was a great game. Unfortunately, the Homers offense
forgot to show up at the start, and even after a 13-run rally to take the
lead, couldn't score enough to stay ahead of the McKringleberries. Johnny
had the only homer and generally was flying six inches off the ground
whenever he was on base. Unfortunately, Abby had to leave early, and the
Homers defense couldn't do enough to hold off the purple horde of
youngsters.

The Homers had their second game of the season last Wednesday and made
it count with a solid win over old rivals the Wild Turkeys.
Highlights of the game included Leah's catch of a pop-up foul at third base
and Johnny's smooth unassisted double play at first. A team effort came
with Abby, Ana, Richard, and Brian's throwout at third. In the outfield
Brian strategically fumbled the ball, while Richard backed up and threw
the ball to Abby at short stop, who relayed the ball to third where Ana
tagged the runner who didn't know what hit him. Also, notable mention
to Ana for her running catch of an out-of-play foul ball at third base
and Laura catching a foul ball as catcher.

After months of near silence (also known as the off-season) the public is
clamoring for some news. They have heard wild speculations. They have heard
rumors. They have heard strange conspiracy theories. None of which have
satisfied them. They demand to know the truth! They demand to see everything.
They demand to know what really happened. They demand to see the unredacted
HOMERS Report! (Oh yeah, and some other report by that Mueller guy
too.)
Who am I to deny the public what it wants? So here it is, the first HOMERS
Report of the 2019 JPL C-League softball season.
As has become custom, the HOMERS once again begin the new season with
a victory. This year's victims were the young and enthusiastic Single

The HOMERS offense started a bit slow, but it warmed up as the game
progressed. Hopefully the lacrosse players will exit the field a bit
earlier next game to allow time for the traditional HOMERS batting
practice before the first pitch. The HOMERS did carry on their tradition
of living up to the team name by hitting 2 home runs in the game. Tony GR
hit a monster shot that demonstrated sheer power. Will hit one with a bit
less power, but was able to rely on his speed to make it to home before
the ball did. Everyone else contributed to the offense with at least one
hit.
Defensively the HOMERS looked strong. The highlight was probably the one
inning where all three outs were made by good stops by Abby at shortstop,
followed by accurate throws to Johnny at first base.
The HOMERS welcomed Leah and Calla making their team debuts. The HOMERS
also were glad to have Slim back from the frozen wastelands know as
Michigan, even if it was just for one game.
Dinner at Round Table: Jeff, Richard, Annette, Tony Gr, Chad, Slim,
Rich, Ron, Scott, Robb.
Jeff is off to Paris to investigate the Notre Dame tragedy, so make sure
you let Richard know if you are going to miss next week's game against
the Wild Turkeys on Wednesday April 24 on Field HN. Oh, and don't forget
those team fees that some of you still owe!
