The algorithm to determine the winner:

  • number of regular season games attended
  • if tied, irregular season games attended
  • if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season games
  • if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
  • Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting order, 2) the order of sitting out defensively, and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular game.

    30 August 2023: Homers 9, Voodoo TOAD Fury 17

    From: Richard Chen

Pressing matters first. Who's in, who's out for this coming season? We start April 15. I know Tony Ga is out - stupid Florida. I ran into Will, who will be out - nothing stupid there. I crossed epaths with Ryan, who will be back. Yay! You other regulars, please let Jeff or me know.

The Toads crushed us 17-9 six months ago, providing too much disincentive to finish this report. Robb cancelled his and Mary's Super Bowl party, an annual ping lost to the wind. Then came Operation Rolling Thunder x hostage video, which is how it felt from a division at the tail end of the day. But the softball organizational meeting tomorrow, with its possibility of running into a D-I athlete turned C League wannabe - now that's motivation.

My notes from six months ago: that game sucked. Ryan made an outstanding catch in RF on a hard line drive, and Lisa made a similar catch at 2B. Our hitting wasn't so great, e.g. 10 outs in a row from the first to the fourth. Eh, that happens. Let's remember that we did have a good year: 13 wins, 4 losses. More to come.

14 August 2023: Homers, Space Force (ff)

    From: Scott Morgan

There was no Space Force. There was no game.

Nala chased squirrels. The HOMERS chased flies.

We bid farewell to Adam as he returns to school.

Dinner was at Roundtable attended by: Jeff, Adam, AJ, Abby, Daniel, Annette, Mary, Robb, Scott.

Next game is Monday on the HS (grass) field. Please let Richard and Jeff know if you won't be able to make it.

    9 August 2023: Crawdads 12, Homers 19

    From: Ron Baalke

The game started off with the Crawdads taking a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning. The Homers emerged from their softball hibernation and decided it was time to play ball. By the 3rd inning, the game was tied at 5-5, as the Homers started to heat up. By the 4th inning, they were leading 9-7. The 6th inning saw the Homers with a narrow 13-12 lead, almost as tense as navigating through the recent Mauri fires, but then they exploded for 6 runs, leaving their opponents in ashes and taking the game 19-12.

And speaking of abrupt endings, the game concluded with an unassisted double play by Johnny at 1st base, much like an unexpected rainstorm dousing the last embers.

With the victory, The HOMERS extend their winning streak to 6 games and improve their record to 12-3.

    Offense:
Ron delivered a 3-run HR in the 6th inning, thanks to Johnny's Olympic-level sprinting.
Richard smacked a 3-run triple in the 4th inning.
Chad was hot, going 4 for 5 with a couple of doubles
Ron, Daisy, Annette, Ana, and Tony all contributed with 3 hits each.
An injured Ryan came into the game when Richard left and went 2 for 2.

    Defense:
Ryan was awarded the title of "Best Dressed Catcher".
Johnny's unassisted double play was a sight to behold.

Next week's game is Monday, 8/14 at HS (grass) against the Space Force. Let Jeff or Richard know if you can't make the game.

    31 July 2023: Homers 31, Eclectic Eccentrics 14

    From: Chad Galley

Since Annette started off with a joke in her report then I'll do the same. Two men walk into a bar. The third one ducks. Now that the ice is broken, here goes. The Homers played every bit to their namesake on their way to a 31-14 drubbing of the Eclectic Eccentrics. By the end of the top of the second inning, the Homers had scored almost half their total, already had enough runs to win the game if the Homers' bats went silent, and EE were in double mercy. The Homers didn't let up, though, and got some great bats and running up and down the lineup as well as some great fielding to hold EE at bay. Haley made some pro pick-ups and nearly caught a couple foul balls, laying out the body in her attempts to make the catch. Richard (2), Chad (2), and Ryan (1) each hit home runs. The hallowed annals of softball don't recall if AJ hit a triple or two and/or if Ron hit a triple or two with AJ running the bases but between the two of them they hit like eight triples. Adam had to leave early but Daniel, sensing the despair of the team dropping to nine fielders, arrived just in time. The only sour note of the game was that the Homers lost Calla to the EE since they didn't have enough players. However, to show her true Homer spirit, which EE could never diminish, Calla "missed" catching a foul pop-up for which we're all very thankful (well, at least I am since I hit that one!).

A quick scan of the Homers webpage (http://homers.jplsoftball.org/index.shtml) indicates that our 31 points was the largest by a Homers team since the game against Cinco Equis on May 24, 2017 -- more than six years ago -- when the Homers tallied 35 points!

Dinner was at Round Table with Richard, Dora, Abby, AJ, Daniel, Jeff, Scott, Calla, Ryan, and Chad (sorry if I missed someone!). No dogs were in attendance and a groundhog in the dugout provided the usual heckling.

Next game is... today (!) against the Crawdads on the North (dirt) field. Dinner tonight after the game is at the Rath Al Fresco outdoor venue at the Athenaeum on the Caltech campus. Sue sent out an email to the Homers email address to get a head count several days ago.

    25 July 2023: LA Radars 6, Homers 16

    From: Haley Ganino

Disclaimer: I'm [Tony] sending this out for Haley since she does not have immediate access to the homers email group. Also, apologies that the following report is a little long, but this is due to the fact that, for fun and on her Dad's suggestion, Haley post-processed her original writeup (which, for the record, was similarly good) through chatGPT. Every time we do this, we are floored by the results so we're sharing this version (complete with AI-generated emojis) with the group so you can make your own judgment of this new technology. If anybody wants to see the original writeup that generated this AI-driven prose, just let us know and we'll send that along also...

Oh boy, what a week of sports madness we've had! From epic showdowns to outfield acrobatics, it's been a rollercoaster of athletic awesomeness! First up, we had the US Women's National Team taking on the Netherlands. A showdown fit for the soccer gods! Next was the annual showcase of the country's best young softball talent at the PGF tournament in Huntington Beach. But you know what really stole the spotlight? Brace yourselves: the C League softball game between the Homers and the LA Radars!

Now, hold onto your helmets, because the Homers crushed it with a 16-6 victory! Talk about domination! But, hey, let's not rest on our laurels. Our pitchers need to channel their inner superheroes and bring that e.r.a. down to zero. That's right, zero! Let's assert total dominance in the JPL C League!

But oh, the sun! The sneaky opponent that kept trying to sabotage our game. However, our outfielders didn't let that stop them - they were like superheroes with capes of determination, catching balls left and right! Ryan and AJ in RF were like a dynamic duo, making catches look smoother than a buttered dolphin on ice!

Defensive spectacles? Oh, we had those in abundance! Haley flew through the outfield like a majestic eagle, making a diving catch that even ESPN would be drooling over! And then Johnny, manning 3rd base like a fortress, had his own diving magic to finish the inning with style! What a show!

Now, speaking of Abby - seems like she got a bit too inspired by the Women's World Cup. Soccer with the softball? Well, old habits die hard, right? But hey, we forgive her; we all have our moments of sports confusion!

On the offensive end, we witnessed a barrage of hard-hitting missiles! But hold up! Johnny's home run in the third inning deserves a standing ovation. It was like the Hulk went all Shohei Ohtani on us, with an extra sprinkle of steroids! I mean, who needs superheroes when we have Johnny, right?

So there you have it, a week full of sports fever, epic plays, and a dash of quirky humor to keep things interesting. Until next time, my fellow sports enthusiasts - stay marvelous and keep those home runs flying!

    19 July 2023: Bruisers 11, Homers 22

    From: Calla Cofield

Hello avid readers, I'm Homers beat reporter Calla Cofield coming to you with a third homers report this season.

The Homers bruised the Bruisers early in the game (6 runs in the first and 9 in the second) and though the run counts were low the rest of the game, the Homers never let go of the lead. Final score Homers 22, Bruisers 11.

Adam, AJ and Johnny got home runs. AJ helped with three double plays at 1st despite a sore shoulder; two with Tony Ga and one with Abby. Haley clocked one past the outfielders but it hit that darn picnic table so was counted as a double rather than a homer.

    12 July 2023: Titans 5, Homers 26

    From: AJ Bolduc

The Homers managed to make softball look easy last week against the Titans. Maybe it helped that we had a huge roster, totaling 14 players, but regardless, we came ready to play. With 8 runs in the 1st inning and a stunning 13-run 4th inning, there wasn't much hope left for the Titans, who were down 26-2 after the 4th inning. The 5th inning (offensively) was the shortest for the Homers, as we were forced to start with 2 outs. During their final at-bat, the Titans decided to take out their frustrations on our shortstop (Abby) who ended up taking a bad hop to the face with only minutes left of playing time.

Offensively, Homers had a great night with every single player making it on base at least once. Highlights include Ryan with a HR in both the 1st AND 4th inning and Johnny with a HR in the 4th inning.

Defensively, Johnny and Ryan made some great stops at shortstop and outfield, respectively. Also, there were two double plays! One was a fly ball to Calla, who made the catch and throw to Tony Ga at 1st to make the force out. The other double play was a grounder to Johnny who made the throw to Richard at 1st and then Richard saw the opportunity to get the ball to Ana at 3rd for the second out.

I'd also like to shout out Haley for spending her free time playing on her favorite JPL C league team!

    27 June 2023: Voodoo Toad Fury 18, Homers 15

    From: Annette Nasif

Starting with a joke because I can't think of a witty introduction...
An interoffice softball game was held every year between the company's marketing and sales staff. The sales staff whipped the marketing department soundly 10 to 1. But the marketing department showed how they earn their keep by posting this memo on the bulletin board after the game:
The marketing department is pleased to announce that during the 2020 softball season we came in 2nd place, having lost just one game all year! The sales staff, however, had a rather dismal season, as they won only one game.

Summer finally decided to make an appearance, marking the first game of the season where players did not have to huddle together for warmth. Let's be honest here, our first inning just sucked. And we never quite recovered from it, but we got close enough to make it a fun game. Despite Richard and Johnny having to leave early, the Homers made the Toads sweat in the last two innings. Adam's spectacular homerun and unassisted double play helped the Homers get to within 3 runs, but we ended up losing 18-15. But the nice weather, friendly rivalry, and high spirits made for an enjoyable game.

Other notable plays were Adam's catch of a liner to 3rd and Annette's three outs while playing RF and 2B.

Dinner was a festive Taco Tuesday at Los Gringos Locos enjoyed by Calla, Abby, Jeff, Adam, Daniel and Annette. As far as I know we are still waiting on the schedule for future games. But once it comes out, let Jeff and Richard know ASAP if you will be missing any games.

    14 June 2023: Homers 20, Space Force 6

    From: Abby Couto

Hi all, It's been a couple weeks since the HOMERS battled Space Force, and some of the details are fuzzy now thanks to this author's procrastination habit. However, some highlights were bright enough to remain in memory (... or were documented by Jeff on the scoresheet 😊):
_ BLUF: HOMERS beat Space Force 20-6
_ Offensively: Tony Gr had 2 home runs and Haley got a GRAND SLAM!
_ Defensively: I'm pretty sure there was a double play at some point but I don't remember who was involved or what inning it was in... There were also some great catches in the outfield!
_ Most notably: There were several dogs in attendance! 3 of the 4 HOMERS pups are pictured below (photo credit = Robb); shout out to Mia, Spanky, Nala, and Apollo for their paws-itivity and loyal support throughout. There was also a Space Force pup, who was exiled to the third baseline for most of the game but joined his owner and played in the outfield during the last inning.

    8 June 2023: Paper Tigers 14, Homers 25

    From: Calla Cofield

    Hi all,
Wednesday's game was a victory for the Homers against the Paper Tigers, with a final score of 25 to 13. But the real drama came in the form of a baby gopher in the outfield and Tony Gr's valiant effort to protect it from a hawk. (It's possible Tony violated some sort of protected species act by threatening the hawk with a softball, but his heart was in the right place.)

For those who favor the hawk in this argument, Tony Gr can be forgiven because he had a left field home run in the first inning. He also missed an outfield catch and blamed it on a tree.

We were also excited to welcome back Brian White who was visiting from NYC. Who (is Brian White)? He's on first (for most of the game). Despite launching some incredible hits to the outfield and an absolute rocket straight at the pitcher, Brian didn't get on base for his first three at-bats. But his final turn at the plate was comedic gold: After a powerful drive to the outfield, the runner in front of Brian became the third out for the inning due to the mercy rule. Although the Paper TIgers managed to get the ball to third base before Brian, the baseman didn't realize he had to tag the runner, who whipped right past and scored at home, to great fanfare (from the Homers side at least).

    30 May 2023: Homers 11, Bruisers 12

    From: Robb Warren

In sports there are unassailable traditions that stand the test of time. The handshake line after a hard fought and intense Stanley Cup series (most likely copied from traditional post-game handshakes after a JPL softball game), the drinking and/or dousing of milk after the Indy 500, or the garland of roses draped across the winner of the Kentucky Derby (the horse, not the jockey). However, some things just don't make sense. They defy our sense of logic and baffle the intellect. Take for example #8 seeds advancing to both the NBA and NHL Championships this year (and both from Florida). In addition, I'm sure Lord Stanley never envisioned a desert city and a beach city vying for the right to hoist the Stanley Cup. JPL softball has those same head shaking events, not the least of which has been an end to the historical dominance of the Homers over the Bruisers. Prior to 2022, the Homers had never lost to the Bruisers, a string stretching literally decades. However, that dominance came to an end that year after a much-improved Bruisers team swept both games. Even more head shaking, that reversal continued in the most recent match between the two teams as the Bruisers came from behind and defeated the formerly dominant Homers 12-11.

The Homers were unfortunate enough to play shorthanded for much of the game, relegated to playing just 3 outfielders after the 2nd inning. Despite that, the Homers actually held a 9-2 lead halfway through the game. The Bruisers then mounted their comeback, ending the game with a walk off run in the bottom of the 7th. Highlights were at a premium for the Homers, although Richard made a nice running catch in short left center, and Daisy was credited with 5 putouts at 2nd. There was not much to cheer about offensively for the Homers either, although Tony Ga did chase a hawk out of the park trees with a long drive to right center field.

Thanks to Cory for subbing in this one, as well as Jeff making his 2023 playing debut due to the player shortage.

Great win for the Homers! Everyone made it on base, except for Tony Gr who hit a GRAND SLAM, so he just ran around all the bases instead. Other highlights included a double play between Abby, Daisy and Ryan, a running catch in the outfield by Calla, and great field awareness by Tony Ga making sure the infield made smart plays.

    15 May 2023: Homers 16, Mercy Be Crazy 18

    From: Daniel Limonadi

We lost Johnny and Richard in the 3rd inning due to a B-league conflict (boo), and the mighty bat of Tony Gr has continued to be missed as he nurses his back back to health. Keith Comeaux, of MSL EDL flight director fame (the guy jumping up and down after touch down in the landing video J), was kind enough to play for us as a sub and did a great job.

Offensive highlights were a little slim with no homers from our big bats, but Tony Ga, Daniel, and Abby all got on base every at-bat, and in the 6th inning the team rallied a bit to get close but not quite close enough to force the visitors to play their last at bat. Defensive highlights included a nice over-the-shoulder-while-running (jogging confidently?) catch by Johnny. Spectator highlights our local one year old Ethan working on his mad walking skills, while mom was trying to keep him out of the poison oak...

    8 May 2023: Cinco Equis 20, Homers 21

    From: Tony Ganino

Inconceivable! In this case, the Homers know exactly what this word means. 2 putouts at home plate due to perfect throws from the outfield in C League... inconceivable! But even with those heroics, Cinco Equis only thought they won the game! That's what's so funny! We switched glasses (I mean, added one last inning) when their backs were turned! Ha ha! Those fools! They fell victim to one of the classic blunders - the most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never pitch to AJ when a walkoff run is on the line"! Field Managers: Jeff (all by his lonesome)
Spectators: Sue and, from time to time between innings, the Ganino clan (from all points east via Google Meet)

Offensively it was another solid game by all of the HOMERS players, although not so true to their namesake, most of the damage was done by a consistent barrage of singles with nary a HR in sight. However, for the 2nd straight week, AJ brought the excitement with one of the "ugliest walk-off blooper hits ever" to bring in Annette and seal the win.

On the defensive side it was mostly a low key consistent performance with a few errors sprinkled around (mostly by me) but with each backed up by nice follow-up plays to prevent any damage from spreading. Ryan and Calla registered nice outs in the final inning(s) by running down short and long fly balls, respectively, to keep it close enough for AJ's exciting finish.

Finally, thanks to Ben for joining us today (is it a permanent thing?). Regardless, he showed some versatility in the field and added 3 hits to help keep the offensive production moving along.

Dinner after the game was at the restaurants of The La Canada Flintridge Town Center and some people attended (unbeknownst to the author since he had to rejoin the Ganino Clan on their weekly call following the game).

The next game is on Monday, May 15 against Mercy Be Crazy on HS. As usual, make sure you let Richard and Jeff know if you can't make it.

    2 May 2023: Eclectic Eccentrics 10, Homers 11

    From: Jeff Osman

Things have been a bit strange.
    - WEATHER: California has had one of its wettest winters on record, after many years of extreme drought.
    - POLITICS: A former President of the USA is under criminal indictment, and yet is still considered the "front runner" for his party's nomination.
    - MEDIA: The leading cable news network personality has been fired for "secret" text messages that merely confirm his racist behavior he has displayed for years.
    - SPORTS: The Lakers are in the play-offs. The Angels are above .500. Oh, and oddly enough, the HOMERS are having more trouble rounding up male players than female players!

Despite the current weirdness of gender politics it has been the women HOMERS who have risen to the challenge and saved the day for the team. The HOMERS were once again victorious over the Eclectic Eccentrics in a tight, well played game.

Offensively it was a solid game by all of the HOMERS players, but the clear highlight was the walk-off home run hit by AJ to seal the victory as the lead-off batter in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Defensively there were several highlights. Ryan making a stunning catch while running full speed to catch a blooper fly ball. Tony Ga demonstrating his versatility playing a different defensive position every inning. And a sharp double play between Abby and AJ, who then proceeded to announce their engagement to the team. Congratulations!

Dinner after the game was at Round Table attended by Ryan, Chloe, Jeff, Daniel, Annette, Ron, and Robb.

The next game is on Monday, May 8 against Cinco Equis on HN. We know we will be missing several regular players so make sure you let Richard and Jeff know if you can't make it.

    26 April 2023: Homers 20, LA Radars 5

    From: Ryan Kinnett

The Homers continued their winning streak on Weds, 4/26, in a win against the L.A. Radars in the south field of Hahamonga Park.

As players arrived to the field, each questioned whether they came to right field or on the right day, after failing to locate the usual field marker (Scott). The absence also left the team wondering if another shady backroom shakeup had occurred, possibly ordered from Rupert Murdoch (owner of Fox Entertainment, parent company to the Simpsons) himself. Turns out Scott's absence was only temporary. The Homers' usual Field Manager is expected to return in good health probably on 5/2/23. Jeff did an admirable job managing the famously rowdy bunch in his stead.

Highlights included a 2-home-run streak by Chad, many great hits across the board, several fine double plays, and an infield catch by Calla, converted to 2 outs with a quick toss to Daisy on 2nd.

    19 April 2023: McKringleberries 6, Homers 17

    From: Calla Cofield

AMAZING season opener (yes?) for the Homers! Lots of laughs and fun on the field with the McKringleberries, even though we mercied them in the first inning and kept the lead the whole game!

The highlight from where I'm sitting is Scott's fantastic penmanship and score keeping. Just really great work. Good job Scott!

Other highlights: We mercied the McKringleberries in the first inning with 12 runs. Tony Gr and Chad both had home runs, and Abby and Tony Ga had a double play. Tony got another homer in the 4th.
