The algorithm to determine the winner:
number of regular season games attended
if tied, irregular season games attended
if tied, lowest sum of order of appearance at regular season
games
if still tied, order of appearance at irregular games
Order of appearance also pretty much determines: 1) each game's batting
order,
2) the order of sitting out defensively,
and 3) who gets sent over to the other team if they don't
have enough. Note: the payment of team fees counts as an irregular
game.

Clement got his reading list for this year's English 2 at LCHS, and my
poor son has to read Othello. From Act I:
But he, as loving his own pride and purposes,
Evades them with a bombast circumstance,
Horribly stuffed with epithets of war.
And in conclusion
Nonsuits my mediator
Someone got insulted? Undressed? ¿Como? I think that was a
key moment. So here's the Homers' study guide to Shakespeare:
- Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness
thrust upon them
The Homers defeated the VelociBatters yesterday, 21-18, a tight game
with no mercy outs. Naturally great on this day was Chad, who went
5-for-5 and locked down LF. Achieiving greatness was Daisy, who early on
charged in too far on a popup but later speared a hard liner to her right to
end the 5th, then drove in our final run in the 6th with another solid hit.
Thrust into greatness was Daniel, who came in cold off the bench after
Mark pulled his hammy.
- Dost thou bite thy thumb at me
Not just has Mark been the biggest positive difference this year, hitting
more homers than any Homer since the pandemic, but who's got the
most fire on the team?
- The robbed that smiles, steals something from the thief
This line's actually from Othello. Next week we'll need the calm, positive
poise of Lisa, Annette, and Calla, as the Toads might throw actual
insults on top of the normal ebbs and flows of a close game.
- Better three hours too soon than a minute too late
Manager Jeff has been first to the field in 15 of 17 games this year, with Ron
first the other two. They with Scott and Robb provide a familiar visual target
for the rest of us too muddleheaded to know more specifically where to go than
simply Hahamongna.
- The world's mine oyster, which I with sword will open.
Who knows how long we geezers will last - 34 years is already long.
However, our young guns of AJ, Abby, Ana, and Johnny are probably better
than anyone else's. The quote probably applies to their work lives as well.
- I cannot tell what the dickens his name is
In the absence of actual new hires, the Homers filled their gaps this year
with interns, lots of interns. Not only Matt, who killed the ball in his
farewell game, but also Naoya and Akseli, who played great earlier in the
year but have already left. Here's hoping they return someday and do great
things. Let's throw Wally in here too, though interning seems unlikely,
though there is DEIA if he's interested - 'A' stands for age, right?
- It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing
And that's your Homers report and reporter for this week.
(A period works so well there. In my one inning at SS I did properly execute
a one-throw rundown, with AJ making the actual putout by catching my wild
toss and tagging out the runner to end the game.)
Next week's game is on Wednesday, August 28, against the Toads on the dirt
field, our season finale. Regulars, please let Jeff and/or me know if you
can't make it.

The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will add softball as a new sport. The 2028 LA
Softball scouts were at the game to evaluate the Homers players.
The game started off with the Crawdads taking a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.
The Homers led 7-1 after 3 innings. A nine-run 4th inning extended the lead
to 17-1 and a double mercy.
The Homers only made 12 actual outs in the entire game, and the final score
was 20-4.
With the victory, The HOMERS extend their winning streak to 7 games and
improve their record to 14-2.
Offense:
Mark hit 2 home runs including a Grand Slam (Olympic candidate)
Richard hit a home run in the first inning.
Richard, Daisy, Mark and AJ all went 3 for 3.
Defense:
The Homers played great team defense and there were no dropped balls I
can remember.
The Crawdads hit the ball hard on several occassions and many ofthose
were caught by Mark
and Abby (Olympic candidate) in the infield, and Chad, Wally and Anette
in the outfield, and Ron at pitcher.
Pitching:
Ron & Richard (!) each pitched a 4-pitch scoreless inning.

From: Chad Galley
It was hot outside for the game against Cinco Equis last week but the only
thing hotter was the Homers. Eleven runs were scored in the top of the first
by Homer bats. The hot hitting would utterly demoralize the home team after
being mercied before the inning was half over. The parade of base runners
couldn't be stopped with solid hits coming from almost everyone in the
lineup, including Johnny's big homer. Not to be outdone, Mark showed off
his hot bat with a homer of his own in the fourth. The Homers also had hot
gloves working the field as Abby had a great pick-up and long throw in the
second to get the runner out on a sharp hit while Lisa made a spectacular
catch deep in right field to prevent a ground-rule double.
After the third inning, it was too much. The Homers were just too hot. The
only way to cool down was to evaporate off a few players and drop a few
degrees by letting go Johnny, AJ, and Abby to the big league. Playing three
outfielders for the third time in four games, the suddenly tepid Homers were
able to hold off the XXXXX's from winning the game despite mounting a
comeback in the last inning. Homers win 18-14! In lieu of a parade, someone
in the parking lot serenaded the victors with songs on a bassoon to enshrine
yet another Homers victory.
Thanks to Matt for substituting in the game and to Naoya for joining us this
season. Hopefully, we'll see both again. Finally, thanks to Johnny for
providing emergency care to the Cinco Equis' catcher who had injured her
ankle during the game. Just wait until she sees the bill, ha!
The next game is Wednesday, August 14 on the dirt field against the Crawdads.
Speaking of food, dinner afterward will be outdoors at the Athenaeum at
Caltech. You should've received an email from Sue earlier about getting a
head count to reserve a table. If you haven't responded to Sue and are
planning to go to the Ath after the game then please follow up with her
(suekientz@gmail.com) so she can get an accurate head count. Thanks!

Greetings to all of you amazing Homers!!
I would like to start this report with a note of appreciation. We are
extremely grateful to our management team, Scott, Jeff, Robb, and Richard,
for all the effort and time they put into making our team the best it can be.
You are greatly appreciated!
So, who's leading the Paris Olympic Games in 2024? Google reports that "Team
USA is back in the lead, after winning silver in Tokyo three years ago." You
may not be surprised to learn that the Homers continue to dominate the podium
after maintaining a healthy score throughout the season.
Here are a few highlights of the game:
- A big shout out goes out to Richard and Calla for their double play from
third base to first base. Calla made it look so effortless as she caught every
single ball that was thrown at her from every angle. She was on fire!!
- Mark made a fantastic recovery from shortstop to first base.
- Kudos to Daisy for hitting a double in the 6th inning.
- The hats are off to Johnny for nailing his GRAND SLAM!!!!!!!
- Daisy's quick recovery from second base allowed her to tag the runner
who thought it would be a good idea to run off second base. Thank you to the
amazing team members who stood by her and said, "tag him, tag him."

Hi all,
As a first-time writer of the Homers' Report, I'm relieved the game on
July 24th had plenty of highlights. With many on vacation and the JPL
Dodgers night being held simultaneously in Downtown, we welcomed two subs,
Jana and Koko, who showed off their skills and more than contributed to the
Homers win over the Radars. Thanks to the two as well as Richard's collection
of 2-liter bottles (!) which helped avoid a forfeit!
The Homers secured a comfortable lead by the second inning, leading 14-0.
Johnny, Naoya and Mark delivered home runs, contributing to the lead. We
also saw many defensive highlights. Jana showed some sharp fielding skills,
defending the third base corner throughout the game; Johnny showed his
incredible speed catching up to a shallow popup in left field. However, the
two best plays of the day were: 1. Koko's unassisted double play at first
base, snatching a line drive and quickly stepping on first, and 2. Daisy's
amazing line drive catch at 2nd base, reaching a hard-hit ball that was way
over her head!

Dinner was at Taco Social in Eagle Rock with Jeff, Richard, Mark, Jana,
and Naoya. Conversations centered around the Olympics, which has just started
on Friday. I don't know enough about the Olympics to say anything witty,
but hopefully the athletes can stay healthy if they decide to swim in the
Seine...

It was the All-Star break for the MLB, so naturally the All-Stars were out
to play for the Homers this week. Although they did not turn it into the
actual home run derby, the Homers were able to demonstrate their offensive
prowess by scoring 12 runs straight out of the gate, leaving Space Force
wondering what hit them (sometimes literally with approximately 4 hits
nearly taking off various players legs). The scoring did not stop there,
as the team was able to put up an additional 11 runs even with the mercy
rules in effect for the rest of the game. According to the tenured members
of the Homers, this may have been one of the fastest games in JPL C-League
history!
There are few things in this world that are as reliable as the Homers'
defense was against the Space Force. Few things that come to mind are the
sun rising and setting each day, and having to pay taxes. The Homers'
defense was nearly unwavering, giving up an average of <1 run per inning.
Although there were no mind-blowing, ESPN Top-10 highlights, everyone was
locked in to smother the Space Force offensively. Two double plays were
made; first by Mike at 3rd to tag the bag and complete the play to AJ
at 1st, and the final play of the game from Richard in LCF to Sandria
at 2nd with Abby coming over from 1st to put the finishing touch on the
game.
Huge thanks to Mike (2nd time bailing us out) and Sandria (first game!!)
for subbing and making the team look so good! And big shoutout to Scott
for the creative lineup work following Mark needing to cut out at the
middle of the 4th inning.
The next game will be against the Radars at Hahamonga Watershed Park
South (grass field) @ 530 PM on Wednesday 7/24 (one week from today!).
As always, please let Richard and Jeff know if you cannot attend.

When you can't think of a witty intro for the Homer's report, start with
a joke:
A little girl was overheard talking to herself as she strutted through the
backyard, wearing her baseball cap and toting a ball and bat: "I'm the
greatest hitter in the world," she announced. Then, she tossed the ball
into the air, swung at it, and missed. "Strike One!" she yelled. Undaunted,
she picked up the ball and said again, "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!"
She tossed the ball into the air. When it came down she swung again and
missed. "Strike Two!" she cried. The girl paused for a moment to examine
her bat and ball carefully. She spit on her hands and rubbed them together.
She straightened her cap and said once more, "I'm the greatest hitter in the
world!" Again she tossed the ball up in the air and swung at it.
She missed. "Strike Three!" "Wow!" she exclaimed. "I'm the greatest
pitcher in the world."

On the warm evening of 7/9/24, the Homers dominated with a 21 to 11 win
over the McKringleberries. Mark was the only player to get a homerun, but
everyone played well and by the second inning we held a commanding lead.
The neglected grass field with its gopher holes, overgrown weeds, and tire
ruts proved a challenge and took down a couple of our players, but they
quickly rebounded and continued to play. The McKringleberries' pitcher was
also tough, continuing to fearlessly pitch even after getting pegged with
the ball twice. And a shout out to Daisy who had an incredible hit that got
her easily to second base, and could have probably even gotten her to third
if she had been willing to ignore the conservative base coaches. There was
a great play in the 6th inning with a Naoya to Abby to Lisa double play.
But the highlight of the game was an "Angels in the Outfield" catch by Naoya
after a near collision with Richard. And speaking of Richard, he pitched
a no hitter inning!
The post game dinner at Round Table was enjoyed by Annette, Calla, Robb,
Naoya, Jeff, Richard, and Dora where much of the discussion centered around
Yosemite and the Olympics
Next week's game will be on Tuesday, July 16 against Space Force on HN.
As always, please let Richard AND Jeff know if you won't be there.

Hello sports fans. Long time HOMERSHOMERSHOMERS* reader, first time writer
here. I admit to not knowing much of the long and storied Homers history,
but I do believe that last weeks' opponents, the Bruisers, had recently taken
a couple games from us after years (possibly decades?) of futility. In this
game we battled through a few lackluster innings, which helped the Bruisers
feel like they might once again have the upper hand against the mighty
Homers. That was, of course, before our monster 14-run 5th inning, which
effectively crushed any upset thoughts they may have entertained. Speaking
of that 5th inning, glancing through my two years of HOMERS reports I could
not find a single inning where we had scored more. So we got that going for
us, which is nice.
There were many noteworthy performances in this game, and, assuming I can
read Scott's boxscore shorthand correctly I'll try to summarize them! Scoring
three runs each were Richard, Abby, and Akseli. Homers homers were
contributed by Abby and Mark. A smooth double play was had by Abby and
Richard, Chad made a sweet running basket catch in left field, our pitchers
superbly fielded their position, and the plays we made at first base vs. the
ones they didn't were the difference in this game (IMO). I do also have to
note that there were a few hot smashes and/or relay throws that just barely
skipped off of recently-relaced Garcia family leather, so we will work on
breaking in those new laces a bit more before our next game!
* I went back through the two years of game reports that I have and see that
the number of consecutive "HOMERS" in the Subject: line differs from two to
five. I am not sure what algorithm is used to set the # (Personal preference?
The actual # of Homers homers? How many runs we win by? How many minutes Ron
gets here before anyone else? Other?) so I'm sorry if I messed something up
by only choosing three. Perhaps someone will

There was a good turnout for Dinner at Taco Social (yum!) in Eagle Rock
with Jeff, Robb, Richard, Dora, AJ, Abby, Annette, Daniel, Lisa, Mark,
Austin, and Sophie getting their taco on.
Our next game is Tuesday, 7/9 on the grass field (Hahamongna South,

As usual, let Richard and Jeff know if you can't make it.

Last week was difficult... first for the Homers on Wednesday as we lost to
Voodoo Toad Fury in a frustrating game, and then for Americans on Thursday
as we watched our top candidates trash talk each other's golf game in the
first presidential debate of 2024.
There were definitely more highlights in the softball game, though, with
Austin Lai making his first HOMERS debut, scoring twice and making a few
great plays behind the plate and in the outfield. We also welcomed Sophie
back and she went 4 for 4 at the plate! AJ made a great catch at first base
despite being blinded for a couple innings after, and Mark hit a homerun in
the second inning and scored 3 more times in the game. Things got physical
with the Toads a couple times, on offense as Richard was running to 2nd on
a nearly caught line drive, and on defense as Abby went to field a grounder.
Thankfully no one was hurt despite the interference and everyone kept their
cool. In the end, we lost by 5, but at least we still have hope for the
future games this season. Hope for our nation and the election in November,
now that's another story...

Cinco Equis notified the Homers early on game day that they couldn't
field a team, so Jeff implored the team for a mid-season practice in a
somewhat overwrought, gender-oblivious manner:
We few, we happy few, we band of Homers;
For he to-day that hits and fields with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in C League now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That practiced with us upon Juneteenth's eve
Sufficiently moved to answer this call were Jeff himself, Richard, Dora,
Annette, Mark, Abby, AJ, and Daniel, and gaining half
immortality for joining at Round Table were Calla and Naoya.
Next week's game is on Wednesday, June 26, on field HS, against
the TOADs. Who would hold their homerhood cheap? I'll
be missing my wife's birthday and our anniversary for the
game, so no excuses allowed, though if you must, please let
Jeff or me know.

During the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics were great at
inducing stress and anxiety during their games. They would start off red hot,
slow to a screeching halt, and then somehow manage to barely pull it off.
As worry some as that may sound, they ended up emerging victorious against
the Pacers and went on to dominate the Mavericks in the Championship Finals
to become the 2024 NBA champions. The most recent Homers vs Titans game was
similar to the Eastern Conference Finals... the bats got going quickly to build
up a 14-7 lead after 3 innings. The Homers then had a 1-2-3 inning against
them and were scoreless for 2 straight, allowing the Titans to reduce the
deficit to only 1 run, inducing stress amongst the management staff, players
and fans. However, in true Boston sports fashion, the Homers rallied in their
last at bat, putting 6 runs on the board and moving the game further out of
reach for the Titans, securing the win with a final score of 20-16. Since the
Celtics went on and dominated, that only means the Homers will too... next game
is today, 6/18, against Cinco Equis. Let's channel that Boston energy!
Notable highlights at the plate include 2 HRs for Mark. In the outfield, good
catches by Richard, Naoya, and Akseli (before we lost Akseli due to injury).
In the infield, Ron showed his gymnastics skills by fielding a ball and
somersaulting before making the throw to Mark at 3B for the out. Also, Daisy
came very close to a highlight out when she almost tagged a runner with a leg
kick. The leg kick missed, but the runner overran 2B... thinking quickly, Daisy
applied the tag as the runner dove back... directly to the runners head.
Unfortunately, the runner had gotten to the bag first, but fortunately, there
was no concussion on the play (definitely a highlight though).
Also, big shoutout to Daniel for bringing the equipment since the opposing
team forgot... it was much better than playing on grocery bags, t-shirts and
hats.

Dinner was at a very loud Round Table while Game 3 of the NBA Finals was on
and was attended by icons and non-icons alike, including Daniel, Annette,
Jeff, Robb, Dora, Richard, Naoya, Abby, and AJ.
From: Robb Warren
Anybody that has grown up a sports fan from an early age has memories of
their heroes, those athletes that became icons in their sport and became
embedded in the minds of their fans. Among my icons were Sandy Koufax, Don
Drysdale, Jerry West, and Roman Gabriel to name a few (and yes, I'm really
that old). Subsequent generations looked up to such greats as Michael Jordan,
Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, or perhaps even Pete Rose (assuming you can get past
that banned from baseball thing). Unfortunately we recently lost one of those
sports icons, Bill Walton. Bill Walton was not only one of the most skilled
basketball players the sport has ever known but had a personality that
transcended sports. His announcing was characterized by hyperbole and long
stretches of banter that seemed untethered to what was transpiring on the
court, albeit always "entertaining". And although his announcing style left
some listeners questioning whether they were listening to a sports broadcast
or some social commentary, few could argue that Walton was a bigger than life
iconic figure. And in an ironic twist of fate, the sports world lost both
Bill Walton AND his Conference of Champions in the same year. RIP to
both.
As we look at some of our current sports icons, we need look no further than
Hahamonga field and the Homers game vs Mercy Be Crazy. Softball heroes that
will long be remembered by today's youth took the field to continue their
pursuit of softball greatness. The game proved to be an exclamation point
for those Homer icons, building a 19-3 lead at one point on their way to a
23-9 victory. The offensive onslaught was highlighted by a home run by Naoya
in his Homer debut (as well as going 5 for 5), and 2 mammoth home runs by
Johnny. Defensively the Homers were as solid as they've been in quite some
time, highlighted by an Abby to Calla double play in the 3rd, a Richard to
Abby put out in the 5th, and Naoya's stab of a hot liner at 3rd in the 7th.
Honorable mention goes to Jeff for coming off the IL and playing a flawless
2nd base for the last 2 innings of the game.

The HOMERS blew open what was a tight game with the Crawdads with a 13 run
5th inning. The HOMERS scored 13 consecutive runs, with the Crawdads unable
to record an actual out (2 mercy outs and a (dropped) infield fly rule
out).
Offensive highlights included a grand slam HOMER by Mark, Lisa tagging up
to score from third, and Ron getting 6 hits.
Defensive highlights included a 7 (Chad) - 6 (Mark) - 2 (Daniel) putout,
Daniel catching 2 foul balls for outs at catcher, a shoestring catch (and
fall) by Chad in left (judges scored it as a both a 'web gem' and a 'not
the top 10' play), and a game ending double play from Ron to Mike.
Thanks to Akseli, Mike, and Wally for stepping in to fill the player void
left by the conflicting Sharks games. Thanks also to Daniel for catching
for both teams during the game.

Our game on 5/15 was notable as it was also our chance to celebrate Jeff's
65th birthday! I don't know if I'd say he's the heart of our team but he's
definitely a major artery so THANK YOU JEFF for everything you bring to the
team! Happy birthday!
Richard and Jeff brought a wonderful BBQ dinner for everyone, and were
simultaneously playing/coaching while also monitoring a very smoky BBQ
grill in the middle of a field of dry weeds so obviously we're all grateful
that didn't end as poorly as it could have.
The game was chock full of amazing plays by this wonderful team including
homers by Johnny, Richard (TWO!), and AJ, and a triple by Ana. Abby dove
twice, once to tag second for an out and once as she dodged around the third
baseman while running. One of our visitors Konner was an absolute champ at
catch, running to catch multiple foul balls. The Homers came out victorious
over the Velocibatters despite that team's aggressive youth. Final score
24-18. And the loss didn't stop them from joining the BBQ thanks to Richard's
invitation, where they offered up delicious cookies and key lime pie.

We had a cool fireside chat this week between the lab director and Simon
Sinek, a NYT best-selling author and self-described unshakable optimist.
In that spirit, lets list off some cool and perhaps surprisingly positive
things that happened recently:
- In a rare (but increasing?) show of bipartisan legislating, the US
Congress actually passed a bill with aid to Ukraine, among other provisions.
It appears Mike Johnson actually believes in getting some minimum amount of
real work done and people on both sides of the isle are remembering how to
compromise once in a while. Yay!
- The First High-Speed Rail Line in the US Breaks Ground: Brightline Vegas
to LA at 200 mph, expected to be finished ahead of the 2028 olympics (ok,
I'm not holding my breath on that date, sorry). Soon-ish you will be able
to go to sin city a little less sinfully and with less traffic. We might
never see Richard, Scott, or Rob again.
- Efforts to save the snow leopard in the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau
continue to pay off, with the population counts stable in Mongolia and
growing in Bhutan (the worlds happiest country™)
- The homers are on a 2 game winning streak!! Ok that isn't supposed to
be a surprise, but let's celebrate anyway, "be grateful and don't take
things for granted" and all that...
Our 3rd game of the year, against the McKringleberries, did not turn into
the blow-out that some might have expected, but it was a fun game that lasted
the full 7 innings. The Homers started off strong but then cooled their bats
for a bit, allowing the McKringleberries to almost close the gap by the end of
the 7th. Offensively Richard led the team with a grand-slam in the 1st and a
single homer in the 5th, repeating his great hitting from last week and
putting him on a grand-slam streak, a rare event per our team historian and
statistician, Ron (maybe tying the record if I recall? Or maybe setting a
new record). On a side note, Richard is currently being investigated by the
JPL softball commission for possible doping. AJ also came in with 2 homeruns,
and Abby did not want to be outdone by her husband so she also brought in a
homer right after his first - back to back family home runs, not sure that has
happened before in homer history? Mark also had solid hits and made it on
base every at bat. Defensively both teams did pretty well: Abbey had a great
stint playing as catcher, doing a goalie dive to keep a ball under control
in one play and making a hard play on a bunt to get the out at 1st, and
Richard ended the game with the Homer's on top by making a great sliding
catch in right field to close the 7th inning. Overall, despite being an old
fart, Richard was the MVP of this game😀

Homers were victorious with a 21-11 win against Space Force!
We started off the first inning with a GRAND SLAM by Richard (1 of 2 HRs this
game). Chad also joined him with 1 HR. Thank you Daniel Z for subbing,
although he said he was a little rusty, there was 0 rust with 3 hits to the
outfield. Everyone got on base this game and everyone scored.
Defensively we had some pretty sweet highlights. Daisy had 4 put outs from
2nd base, nothing was getting passed her. Abby had two double plays and two
relay throw outs at 3rd base from the outfield (Richard > Abby > Ana
and Daniel Z > Abby > Ana). Space Force was trying to get some extra
bases but we weren't letting them. Also defensively AJ made some good plays
at 1st Base, and Ana threw out someone from 3rd to 1st after she recovered
the ball from a dropped hard line drive (I've been lifting weights in the
off season to secure my position at C League 3rd base).

It has been a weird few weeks:
- The sun decided to disappear for several minutes a week ago. (As several
Homers members can attest, totality was totally awesome!)
- We may be on the brink of World War III starting in the mid-east.
- A former President of the United States is on trial for alleged criminal
activity for the first time ever.
- It is mid-April and the Angels aren't completely out of the AL West race
yet.
- And perhaps most bizarre, the HOMERS began the 2024 season with a loss!!!
Yes, it is true. The season did not begin as we had hoped, but at least is was a close and fun game against a friendly long time rival. The tying run was on base and the winning run was at the plate when the HOMERS big rally fell just a little short.

Offensively the HOMERS lived up to their name. Mark Garcia made his HOMERS
debut in grand style by hitting a home run in his very first at bat, and
followed it up later with what I think was a grand slam in the 7th. AJ and
Chad each contributed a home run of their own. Everyone in the line up had
at least one hit.
Defensively there was a good double play by Daisy, Abby, and Mark. Abby
and AJ also executed a nice put out, working together like the newly
married couple that they are. Congratulations to them!
